Nous étions venus fêter les 30 ans de ma conjointe & nous avions pris le menu dégustation en 9 services.
Après le 5e plat, ma conjointe s'est sentie mal (bouffées de chaleur & crampes). Je ne prétends pas que quelque chose n'était pas frais, il peut très bien s'agir d'une simple indigestion. Nous avons fait signe au personnel & demandé à partir rapidement pour rentrer.
Ce n'est pas cet incident que je reproche à l'établissement, personne ne contrôle ce genre de chose. C'est la suite. La totalité du menu nous a été facturée (près de 400 $) alors que nous n'avons reçu que 5 des 9 services. Vu l'état de ma conjointe, il était impossible d'entamer la moindre discussion sur place. On nous a simplement dit qu'un geste serait fait lors de notre prochaine venue.
Le problème, c'est qu'il n'y aura pas de prochaine venue, justement à cause de cette façon de faire. Renvoyer un client à un hypothétique retour plutôt que d'ajuster la note sur le moment, alors que près de la moitié du repas n'a pas été servie, ne me semble pas professionnel. Un ajustement immédiat, même partiel, aurait suffi à sauver la soirée & à nous donner envie de revenir.
C'est dommage, parce que l'occasion était particulière & que nous étions venus avec de bonnes attentes.
Went to Chez Jean-Paul with a few friends last Thursday & honestly it exceeded every expectation. The duck confit was perfectly crispy on the outside, tender all the way through, & the cherry reduction on top was inspired. Our server Antoine was attentive without hovering, which is a balance a lot of places in the city just can't seem to get right. If you haven't been, clear your schedule for the night because you won't want to rush this one.
Stumbled onto Chez Jean-Paul a couple weekends ago & honestly it's been on my mind ever since. The duck confit was perfectly crispy on the outside & just fell apart, exactly what you want on a rainy Saturday evening in Montreal. Our server was super attentive without being overbearing, which is a hard balance to actually get right. Definitely adding this to my regular rotation whenever I need somewhere that feels like a proper night out.
Very confusing & cold experience with inattentive service & lack of conviviality.
The restaurant was mostly empty with 3 other tables at 8:30 on a Saturday. We had 3 different servers & they added & re-arranged clean plates randomly at times.
'À la carte' was misleading as you needed to order in pairs - something that was not well explained in written or verbal form.
For entrées, we had the oursin & asperges. The oursin, beurre de poulet was beautifully presented & very creamy & briny. The asperges herbes citronnées lacked unique flavor.
For mains, one pair ordered the Omble Chevalier & the other pair ordered Canard, salsa de champignon. Since we were directed to order in pairs, we expected both mains to logically come in twos - so we were surprised when the duck came in two distinct servings & the fish came as one dish. We asked our server & she replied that'is how it is' despite no indication on the menu (attached) or when we ordered.
We ordered 2 desserts, both were unique in taste & provenance.
The staff came by to clear tables & we asked for the check & they verbally acknowledged. The same staff member then starting polishing silver, & continued to acknowledge our attempts to get her attention but did not come until the third time. We spent 20 minutes at the end waiting.
The over complication of the menu & reluctance to own it was off-putting.
Had an incredible meal at Chez Jean-Paul, one of the more creative & daring restaurants I've tried in Montreal & each dish was a welcome surprise of flavours, combinations & techniques. Every dish strikes a balance between hyper-refined French execution & playful, creative flavour profiles.
Beyond the food, the service was impeccable, he wine pairings were expertly curated, seamlessly elevating the complexity of each course. A destination worthy table that avoids inflated prices while delivering a truly memorable night out. Can't wait to return!
Très bon restaurant aux mets raffinés. L'ambiance était chaleureuse & chic. Le service excellent. Les cocktails sont vraiment tops, ainsi que le vin. Je recommande de commander le menu dégustation, plutôt qu'à la carte pour un meilleur rapport qualité-prix. Gros coup de coeur sur le dessert Tomate Mozzarella. Original & délicieux!
Nous nous sommes régalés chez Jean Paul. Tout était extrêmement réussi! Mention spéciale pour la tomate mozzarella en dessert, une vraie découverte culinaire. Le service était excellent également.
J'avais hâte d'essayer ce restaurant qui avait tellement de bons reviews, c'était bon, mais pas à la hauteur des attentes créées par les avis. Au prix payé (menu dégustation 8 services), je me serais attendue à un repas plus mémorable & à un service impeccable, ce qui n'a pas été le cas, même si c'était tout de même bien. Les plats étaient pour la plupart très goûteux & surtout créatifs. Coup de coeur particulier pour le plat de topinambour, riz de veau & le pain maison. Certains avaient des enjeux de texture, en particulier le plat de boeuf & brocoli qui était surtout mou & gélatineux & qui aurait mérité un petit ajout croquant & acide. Le service était bien mais un peu lent & bien que nous avons posé des questions sur le vin pour l'achat d'une bouteille pour accompagner notre repas, la serveuse nous a seulement dit qu'un des vins était bon sans nous donner plus d'informations sur les arômes ou le cépage. Bref, en général une belle soirée & une belle créativité en cuisine, contente d'avoir essayé ce restaurant mais j'en essaierais d'autres avant d'y revenir.
