Back in the day (about a million years ago), it was a special thing. My dad used to buy a box of donuts for a treat. My favourite was the glazed donut. Tim Horton's fed me on late nights in University. A friend of mine owns a bunch of franchises. I generally try to never eat at a Tim Horton's because their product is so far off what it was originally. Back in the day, you had a baker on staff who came in & made donuts all night. Today, Tim's is made in a factory, delivered frozen, & made edible by some means I really don't want to think about. Walking along St. Denis, there was a woman with two young boys scarfing down a couple of awesome looking donuts. I asked her where she got them from, & she told me it was around the corner, up the street & turn left again. That was enough calorie output for me to get there. These were the donuts of my childhood. Back when donuts (or beignets as they are called in Quebec) were delicious. They're generously sized, have a number (many numbers) of flavours, & they're fantastic. Made by hand, & with love.
We loved the regular doughnut, nothing fancy, pure soft & fluffy dough with sugar dust. The texture tastes very similar to the Voodoo doughnut from west coast, softer than La beignerie. Great value for the price you pay. The fritter is humongous. But the dough is not to our taste, it was quite thin at some parts which is crispy but greasy, with a thick icing, a few bites is more than I can take. But I would definitely recommend the glacé & sucre.
Bernie Beigne is a popular spot in Mile-End & that is not by chance but because their donuts is one of the very best in Montreal. You cannot go wrong with any of their donuts (they are uniformly great). & whether you want classic flavours (I am more of the classic type of donut lover) or more creative ones, you will find the donut that fits. Easily some of the best donuts in Montreal.
I had the Simpson donut, aptly named for the neon pink, sprinkled confections beloved by Homer Simpson. Being a fan of the Simpsons, I've always wanted to try one of those donuts, & I'm happy to say that I feel like I finally had my chance. Every childhood craving I had was satisfied when I took the first bite into Bernie Beigne's masterful creation. I was blown away by the delicate balance of sweetness & heartiness, the pillowy dough which was unbelievably soft yet also satiating. How did they do it? Surely they spent years perfecting their fermentation technique & their glaze-to-dough ratio. Whatever they did, it worked. Best donut I've ever had.
Endroit incroyable, personnel sympathique, & surtout, surtout, des beignes qui déchirent, variées, ni trop sucrées, ni trop grasses, vraiment a tomber par terre !
We ordered 1 giant maple donut & 120 mini donuts for our wedding in Montreal back in June. Our guests LOVED your donuts! Dean was so helpful when we inquired ahead of time about ordering from Bernie Beigne for our wedding. Thank you for your delicious donuts & exceptional service!
Beignes délicieux & originaux, service amical & efficace, un must! 🍩
Bernie Beigne in Montreal is hands down the best donut shop in the city! Their donuts are absolutely top-notch, with a perfect balance of softness & flavor that melts in your mouth. Each bite is a delightful experience, whether you're trying a classic flavor or one of their creative specials. The staff is friendly & the atmosphere is cozy, making it a great spot to enjoy a sweet treat. If you're a donut lover, Bernie Beigne is a must-visit!
