Visited on December 31, 2025 with my partner.
I never leave reviews, but I felt compelled to write this one - especially when comments are being deleted.
I had high expectations after seeing influencer videos & positive reviews, but reality was the complete opposite. Extremely slow service but food good.
Thankfully, the sushi partially saved the experience, but overall we were very disappointed.
After speaking with nearby tables, we learned that the quality & service have dropped significantly in recent months, apparently due to a new staff - & it clearly shows.
The servers showed no involvement & even seemed to be in conflict, which made the situation uncomfortable. Even the sushi chefs looked uneasy witnessing the chaos.
If you can't manage service properly, don't overbook & make customers wait endlessly. Reviews appear to be filtered & possibly misleading.

Great experience at Umamia. The sushi was fresh, well prepared, & thoughtfully presented. Flavors were balanced without being overcomplicated, which I appreciated. Service was attentive & professional. Portions aren't huge, but the quality clearly justifies it. I would happily return.
Jan'24: We tried this place for the first time & were impressed with the seafood quality for an affordable price. They certainly get a good provider for the tuna 💯 The sashimi pieces are thick & fresh. It's the first sushi place where I see more tuna than salmon is served in rolls. What I find not on point is the sushi sauce & soy sauce which is a bit salty to my taste. We got the platter for 4 & the price is amazingly good for this quality.
The place itself is spacious & has a zen decor, music is not loud. They don't have alcohol license so only mocktails available. Overall it was a nice experience & certainly a nice addition for the Griffintown area.
Apr'24: Food & quality are still great. There's now an outdoor terrace also. The only bemol is the service which is kinda slow & the waiters don't come by very often.
June'24: We're trying the terrace for the time & the seating was very comfortable. It has the Ibiza vibes with the sun & a nice background music. The service can't be better as they gave us free sashimi for bringing out the wrong item.
Aug'24: We had a wonderful dinner with friends who tried this place for the first time. The newly introduced BYOW makes this place even more attractive! The sushi/sashimi are amazing as usual. It took a bit of time to get the food but we quickly forgot about it once the food arrived & the alcohol kicked in.
Dec'24: We came back with some friends. Sushi quality is still good but price has increased a lot compared to beginning of the year. Platter Abundance is now $169 instead of $129!! The restaurant was full. We ordered extra sashimi on top of the platter, asking to have it come out first & they were not able to do it. The sashimi actually came after 😐, & the restaurant felt a bit cold as if it wasn't heated enough. We hope the restaurant will keep up with its reputation.
Sept'25: We've been few times since but this time we noticed a difference so thought of writing a comment. We usually order combos & this time the sashimi, nigiri, maki pieces... everything are smaller in size. I'm even shocked to see how tiny it is the uramaki. Seems like it's different chef doing & it's not as good. Quite disappointed!
UMAMIA is truly a hidden gem in Montreal! I'm not usually used to the bring-your-own-wine concept, but the quality of the food completely blew me away. From the wasabi chips & the fresh salmon tartare to the wide variety of sushi - including the hamachi, eel maki, & the signature Griffin & Tokyo uramaki - everything was exceptional. Thanks the team !
The manager, Pierre-Marc, gives excellent recommendations & delivers a 5-star service that makes you feel right at home. The décor is modern, the atmosphere is warm & inviting, & the playlist is simply perfect for a great night out. Highly recommended!
Premium quality, creative & delicious sushi. The'Experience' platter was fantastic. Finally a nice byow sushi resto. My new fave.
My favorite sushi restaurant in Montréal! Amazing quality, everything is an explosion of flavor. Quantity is great too, you won't need to go eat a burger after that.
Very nice to discover this restaurant!
We had a wonderful diner & a great service. Food was fresh & very good.
To answer some comments, I feel the 5$ for bottle that your bring is regular as we can see this in other restaurant in Montreal too.
Unfortunately, on another hand, I would say that the prices are too high even if the quality is good it's not outstanding.
Careful to the menu you see in picture as it's showing 44 pieces 99$ & now it's 36 pieces for 99$. Lot for changes like this one appears.
I would also recommend to the restaurant to be more generous on regular things (wasabi, ginger, soya sauce,…) it feels a bit tcheap on the quality & the fact that we have to ask for more sauce instead of having tit on the table.
Thanks
Great sushi & great vibes. The service was really good & the manager kept checking on us. The food was also great & I will definitely go again. Great quality for affordable prices as well. Overall, the ambiance was unique & special & the music is really good.
We enjoyed the ambiance & the location: a peaceful little spot surrounded by tall buildings, which made for a charming outdoor dining experience.
However, some aspects of the evening left us disappointed. We paid over $120 for 23 pieces of sushi & a very average, industrial-style dessert. For that price, we expected higher quality & a more exciting taste experience.
When you pay for service, you naturally expect that it includes basic things like serving the wine you brought yourself. I hadn't noticed the small note on the menu mentioning a corkage fee, & the waiter never pointed it out either. I only realized it when the bill arrived. This seems inconsistent with the restaurant's promotional message, which highlights the option of bringing your own wine-something that feels less generous when you're charged to actually drink it.
Sometimes it's not just the food, but all the small things combined-parking difficulties, hidden charges, & a sense of imbalance between cost & quality-that can leave a lasting impression.
We hope the experience improves in the future, but for now, it feels like a place we wouldn't rush back to.
