My best friend & I chose Umamia because you could see the quality of the salmon sashimi from pictures others took. You can see from the pictures that we took that the sashimi is thick, fresh, & really the perfect cut.

My husband & I had an incredible dinner date at Umamia in Griffintown!! The ambiance is beautiful & perfect for a date night or special occasions.
We started with four appetizers: miso soup, salmon yakitori, chicken karaage, & salmon tartare. Everything was well-seasoned & perfectly balanced. The chicken karaage was incredibly crispy without being greasy, easily the best we've ever had thus far. The chicken karaage & salmon tartare come with nori chips, which were sooo soooo good!
We ordered the Experience Platter for 2 as our main meal & glad we did. The platter was well curated with a full spread of sushi & sashimi. Every single piece was fresh & delicious. We shared a pistachio cheesecake that's just sweet enough & the perfect ending to an amazing meal.
The staff were warm, attentive, & made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in.
TLDR; Unique rolls, fresh seafood, & attention to detail! Highly recommend the salmon & shiitake mushroom yakitori, & the Hanami.
YAKITORI ASSORTMENT (5 pc, $28)
- They were out of eggplant, so we replaced it with an extra salmon yakitori skewer.
- Seasoned very well, each skewer has its unique taste despite using the same maple glazed sauce. The shiitake one was a highlight; juicy, packed with umami. Different from your conventional yakitori & well executed.
TRIO SASHIMI (12 pc, $32)
- Very fresh, thick cut sashimi pieces
- Would like to see more seafood varieties in future (eg. octopus, sweet shrimp, squid) included in a sashimi set
URAMAKI
- HANAMI ($25): my favourite, the Unagi (eel) on top of each roll was very flavourful & tender
- GRIFFIN ($27): very creamy, my least favourite out of the three, couldn't really appreciate the torched salmon
- OKINAWA ($25): the orange on top adds a vibrancy to the roll & worked well with the flavours
- If I were to return, I would opt for 6 pc over 8 pc for the rolls, as the portion size is more than it appears & due to the heavier tastes of the ones with mayo
I also agree with another reviewer that I would prefer that the soy sauce be switched to a low sodium type.
I think this is the first time I ever write a review on a restaurant. I unfortunately feel like I have to warn people since the rating is good… It was terrible. The sushi was bad, the flavours were not cohesive & it didn't taste fresh. Our sushi platter stayed on the counter for over 20 minutes before it was served to us. Our entrees were cold & we got our drinks very late. The server was working hard & was alone so I don't blame him but the food was terrible & it cost $200 .
Umamia is the place to go if you are looking for some delicious yet fun sushi either the freshest fish! The service was superbe & our servers provided us the best recommendations (especially the OFF the menu pistachio cheesecake which my highlights of the night hehe). I have nothing bad to say about Umamia, so I definitely recommend to check it out with some friends. FYI: It is a must to try anything eel!
Great experience at Umamia. The sushi was fresh, well prepared, & thoughtfully presented. Flavors were balanced without being overcomplicated, which I appreciated. Service was attentive & professional. Portions aren't huge, but the quality clearly justifies it. I would happily return.
