St-Viateur Bagel & Café Montreal Restaurant: Menu, Reviews & Reserve (2026)
BagelsCaféSandwichesBreakfastCateringFood Truck
Since 1957, St-Viateur Bagel has been a central part of the culture and daily life of Montreal. Its legendary landmark bagel shop operates 24/7 and sells over 1,000 dozen bagels a day. St-Viateur Bagel was founded by Myer Lewkowicz who brought his now famous recipe from Eastern Europe. The art of bagel making means hand rolling each one and baking them in a wood-burning oven. The current owner, Joe Morena, with over 45 years of experience in the bagel business, ensures that the traditions at St-Viateur Bagel continue to be respected. Over half a century, this family business has grown to include 4 bakeries and 2 Bagel Cafés in Montreal. Come and visit us soon or order online today. St-Viateur Bagel & Café Mont-Royal is located in the bustling "Plateau". The avenue is lined with trendy cafés, restaurants and specialty food stores, which contribute to the district's European flair. The café menu offers a number of bagel sandwiches, salads, and a wide variety of specialty coffees.

Review Summary

Reviews describe St-Viateur Bagel & Café as a quintessential Montreal bagel experience, with fresh, wood-fired bagels that are chewy and slightly sweet and offered in many varieties, often enjoyed with cream cheese or smoked salmon and in simple bagel sandwiches. The sesame, rosemary-salt and poppy are frequent favorites, and the bagels are praised for their quality and authentic Montreal character. A common caveat is the long lines and wait times, especially at peak times, though staff are described as fast, friendly and accommodating and the atmosphere remains welcoming. Payment is typically cash and Canadian debit, with US cards not accepted at many locations. Most reviews say the experience is worth the wait and a must-visit for bagel lovers visiting Montreal, though a few find the hype a bit inflated or note occasional inconsistency in freshness or value. Overall, it’s a cozy, bustling spot where you can see bagels being made on site and leave with a satisfying, classic Montreal breakfast or lunch.

Not much to add here, after all it is St Viateur Bagel. I would note that it's incredibly packed during the day so good luck getting a seat or having anything but an incredibly long line that stretched around the building.

Service was good. Bagels were really good. I really liked the BLT sandwich with the all-dressed bagel. Otherwise, worst part about this place is the stupid fact they don't take credit cards... I'm removing a star for that until they change that because of all the hundreds of restos & food shops I've been to in mtl over years I've never seen a big name place not have credit card payments. It's ridiculous.

Not really a fan of the bagels. I'm assuming it's me. It has to be me, right?

This place is viral on social media, so be prepared to wait 20 minutes in the line. Bagels are very delicious, it's worth to try. However, there are other St-Viateur Bagel stores around the city where you can simply buy a regular bagel, if you don't want to wait for bagel sandwich.

I must've gone outside of peak times (around 4pm) because I didn't have to wait at all to place my order & my bagel came out really fast. Only issue is that, probably because I came outside of peak hours, the bagel didn't feel very fresh. I ordered Le Coco & the bagel only had mayo on one side as opposed to both, which made it feel more dry. The filling weren't seasoned well/were lacking flavour or salt so I was a little underwhelmed. The bagel rotation during busy hours probably makes for fresher bagels so, although there's a longer wait, it's maybe worth sacrificing time for freshness. Service was nice. They do in fact only take Canadian debit or cash, which was no problem for me but just something to keep in mind.

Making bagel on the go, we can see its handmade & they do it daily!! It was very cool to see them making the bagel ! Taste really good & really love the vibe in there! The inside doesn't have much place so bit tidy (ended up eating outside to go) Will come back again when I feel like eating bagel~!

Wow crazy good bagels. Fresh out of the wood oven & lots of options. A bit expensive for a small scoop of cream cheese (generic brand made), but the combination of the fresh bagel & cream cheese is unreal. A must try when in Montreal! Remember that this place doesn't take credit card, debit & cash only.

Best nostalgic food if you go to montreal. Had nice hot chai latter & the cream cheese was out of the world. Worth to wait for it

We had the Le coco bagel & the Breakfast bagel. Expect about a 30-40 min wait if you intend on dining in today. The staff do their best to rush people in & out, but I'm not sure if I recommend going out of your way for it. The prices are slightly steep considering you could get a bagel in NYC for half the price & 10x more flavor. It is cash only!! The surrounding neighborhood is nice for a a stroll after as well. I was slightly disappointed in the coffee too. But glad I got to see if the hype was worth it.

Wow, fantastic place. It was recommended to us by a friend & we're happy we went. We tried the sesame bagel with chive cream cheese which was crunchy with a slight smokey flavour on the outside & a warm chewy inside. Cream cheese was ultra soft & luxurious with good flavour. We also tried the maple bagel with apple cinnamon cream cheese. Both were deadly & delicious. Not to mention the service! Above & beyond!

It gets very crowded & the line is usually very long. They accept cash payment only & the cash withdrawal machine is out of service here.

The bagels here were exactly as advertised, but what made it most special was the customer service. The gentleman who greeted us warmly, explained how the service worked & most importantly made us feel very much welcome. I was with my wife & 2 girls & we are definitely tourists & everyone seemed very keen to make sure we had a great experience. They represented their neighbourhood well & made recommendations of other local businesses. We came back later that day for some bagels to take home & they provided instructions how to freeze & prepare the bagels. I'm sorry I missed the name of the gentleman who greeted & helped us but we were grateful for his help. Good service matters & can really make an experience. Kudos.
