St-Viateur Bagel & Café Montreal Restaurant: Menu, Reviews & Reserve (2026)
BagelsCaféSandwichesBreakfastCateringFood Truck
Since 1957, St-Viateur Bagel has been a central part of the culture and daily life of Montreal. Its legendary landmark bagel shop operates 24/7 and sells over 1,000 dozen bagels a day. St-Viateur Bagel was founded by Myer Lewkowicz who brought his now famous recipe from Eastern Europe. The art of bagel making means hand rolling each one and baking them in a wood-burning oven. The current owner, Joe Morena, with over 45 years of experience in the bagel business, ensures that the traditions at St-Viateur Bagel continue to be respected. Over half a century, this family business has grown to include 4 bakeries and 2 Bagel Cafés in Montreal. Come and visit us soon or order online today. St-Viateur Bagel & Café Mont-Royal is located in the bustling "Plateau". The avenue is lined with trendy cafés, restaurants and specialty food stores, which contribute to the district's European flair. The café menu offers a number of bagel sandwiches, salads, and a wide variety of specialty coffees.

Review Summary

Reviews describe St-Viateur Bagel & Café as a quintessential Montreal bagel experience, with fresh, wood-fired bagels that are chewy and slightly sweet and offered in many varieties, often enjoyed with cream cheese or smoked salmon and in simple bagel sandwiches. The sesame, rosemary-salt and poppy are frequent favorites, and the bagels are praised for their quality and authentic Montreal character. A common caveat is the long lines and wait times, especially at peak times, though staff are described as fast, friendly and accommodating and the atmosphere remains welcoming. Payment is typically cash and Canadian debit, with US cards not accepted at many locations. Most reviews say the experience is worth the wait and a must-visit for bagel lovers visiting Montreal, though a few find the hype a bit inflated or note occasional inconsistency in freshness or value. Overall, it’s a cozy, bustling spot where you can see bagels being made on site and leave with a satisfying, classic Montreal breakfast or lunch.

⭐ 5/5 - Absolutely Worth the Hype!
Tried the traditional sandwich at the St-Viateur Bagel Café on Mont-Royal & wow - it was super delicious. The bagel was fresh, warm, & perfectly chewy, & the whole experience felt like a Montreal essential.

The vibe is cozy, the service is quick, & the food genuinely lives up to its reputation. A must-try stop in the city!

Also, the staff were all so nice & friendly. Great job👏👏

For the record, I went on a Saturday & there was line so once i was in the wait was less than 5 minutes from the time I ordered.

Delicous bagels, we enjoyed sweet & savory ones. Busy cafe! Can't wait to go back!

We first went to the bakery not realizing the Cafe was separate but was OK as we wanted to see the actual baking process. We ordered via doordash for pick up & faced a bit of a premium $ added cost. To us it is was worth it as when we arrived there was a large line out the door despite many open tables on the patio & indoors.

Walked up to the front of line & was escorted in to pick up the order. This was about 5 mins after our doordash order was placed. I was impressed with the expediousness. Asked if we could sit down & eat but staff said only for those waiting in line even though all tables were empty indoors. The decline didn't bother me as we enjoyed eating along the pedestrian street just outside the shop. I found it odd the line was so large despite the number of empty tables.

Some say this place is a tourist trap. The bagel sandwich was awesome. We paid 50 bucks for 2 bagel sandwiches with 2 coffees - keep in mind this included the fees for doordash & tip. Was it worth the price? I would say for the one time experience & quick turnaround yes but I wouldn't do it again.

We will however enjoy the bulk bagels we brought home!

Ever since this place was featured on the Netflix show Somebody Feed Phil, I've been wanting to visit-& the hype definitely doesn't disappoint. They have a variety of bagel sandwiches, both veg & non-veg, & my favourite has to be the fig & cream cheese one. It's on the sweeter side but pairs perfectly with an Americano.

This is a cash-only or debit location, so plan accordingly. The ambience is your classic cozy café vibe, & the patio is the best part.

If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of how the bagels are freshly made on-site. I genuinely enjoyed watching the entire process. The staff is super friendly & adds to the charm of the place.

A Montreal staple! The food was delicious & the service was surprisingly very good. I thought it was more of an informal cafe but they actually bring your ordered food right to your table. The meal also filled me up more than anticipated which was awesome! It was also very cool to watch them make the bagels right in front of you. A great time overall

So there's a lot of good things about this place. The service is really good, quick moving lines & very efficient. They do two different line ups for people purchasing sandwiches & those that are getting just a bag of bagels which manages time really well. We got the traditional bagels, all seasoned with smoked salmon & cream cheese & the "Joe Bagel" with ricotta & fig jam on a rosemary & sea salt bagel. The Joe Bagel was really different, the ricotta was light & creamy albeit a little messy to eat. The traditional was good too but lacked a flavour punch. It is also a pet peeve of mine when a bagel isn't cut down the centre & these weren't! Overall, I would say the vibes are definitely there. Is it worth waiting about 30 minutes in line for moderately good bagels? I would say it's subject to personal preference but if we are on the matter of amazing traditional bagels I would highly recommend Cafe Felice that uses St Viateur sesame bagels but have a ton more flavour.

Cash only bagel place with lots of options & English service/menus. Sandwich was really good. To note, it's not really a cafe where you can sit & enjoy a coffee. It has seating but they are turning the tables quick!

Great bagel sandwiches. One star off for being cash only despite being a large, busy cafe

Decent cafe with a good bagel--it was not very chewy for a bagel imo. Not the greatest as I've had better, my friend said the coffee was not good either. The employees were very sweet but it doesnt quite makeup for the quality. & they don't accept Credit card. Only accepts CASH (USD or CAD) or Canadian debit card. Many tourists had to be turned away from service.

As a devoted acolyte to the divine altar of the bagel, I relish the opportunity to take the pilgrimage to St. Viateur Bagel & Café. This sacred journey culminates in the divine experience of savoring their heavenly bagels, where each bite is a taste of perfection. They emerge fresh from the traditional wood oven & warm not just my body but my spirit. There is no smell like that of the boulangerie, no taste like the sweet bagel, & no solace like a bag of warm bagels from St. Viateur.

There are 2 locations & this has a sit down area as a cafe. The bagels are great. Freshly made & not too salty. Ordered 1 dozen to go & it is still good 1 week in!

Personnel sympa. A+ pour les bagels à emporter.

We've been at the restaurant a few times now, & it was time for us to return to have another bagel sandwich. Actually, what made us go & visit was the publicity on the new bagel that was being sold without the hole in the middle there was a lot of controversy around it, & we wanted to go & give it a try for ourselves. Funny enough it does cook way differently as The texture is soft throughout. It's no longer a bagel with crispyness all around it's actually really soft & should not even be considered a bagel really. Anyway, we had our bagel sandwiches. We tried the new' bagel' & it was a fun time out. Where: St-Viateur Bagel & Café, Plateau Montreal What: A café & bagel place How was it: Service is average & a little confusing at times. The delicious St-Viateur bagel is what saves this place. No Bagel = no discovering destinations to come & eat. But seriously, if you are not in the mood to go out to a restaurant - you can simply buy the bagels & stay in. Grade: Eli = 4, Serge = 4- Recommend : The Bagels saves this place !

Classic Montreal bagel. Great Cafe style restaurant out front. Fresh bagels to order in the back. Ended up with 2 dozen for the plane ride home with me.
