St-Viateur Bagel & Café Montreal Restaurant: Menu, Reviews & Reserve (2026)
BagelsCaféSandwichesBreakfastCateringFood Truck
Since 1957, St-Viateur Bagel has been a central part of the culture and daily life of Montreal. Its legendary landmark bagel shop operates 24/7 and sells over 1,000 dozen bagels a day. St-Viateur Bagel was founded by Myer Lewkowicz who brought his now famous recipe from Eastern Europe. The art of bagel making means hand rolling each one and baking them in a wood-burning oven. The current owner, Joe Morena, with over 45 years of experience in the bagel business, ensures that the traditions at St-Viateur Bagel continue to be respected. Over half a century, this family business has grown to include 4 bakeries and 2 Bagel Cafés in Montreal. Come and visit us soon or order online today. St-Viateur Bagel & Café Mont-Royal is located in the bustling "Plateau". The avenue is lined with trendy cafés, restaurants and specialty food stores, which contribute to the district's European flair. The café menu offers a number of bagel sandwiches, salads, and a wide variety of specialty coffees.

Review Summary

St-Viateur Bagel & Café offers an iconic Montreal bagel experience with fresh in house wood fired bagels that are crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, often enjoyed toasted with sesame or rosemary and sea salt and paired with classics like cream cheese or smoked salmon. Expect lively lines that move quickly, a few notes of variable service and occasional dryness or uneven fillings, and cash or Canadian debit payments at some locations, but overall the bagels are widely praised for their freshness and flavor and the experience remains a must visit for bagel lovers in Montreal.

Best bagels in town! Keep in mind it's cash or debit card only. It's a little pricy for sitting down & getting a sandwich but it's delicious. If you're from out of town, it's an amazing spot to try out MTL bagels!

Accueil & service déplorable. Aucune organisation !

Nice place to try the delicious bagels, great service. For tourists only cash or Canadian debit cards! ATM right in the corne

Great bagels & super friendly staffs! They really try to keep the line moving for dine-in, & tables get cleaned quickly. Highly recommend Le Joe Bagel.

One thing to note though: they only take cash or debit cards.

They don't accept credit cards, only cash or canadian debit cards which is a bit dissapointing for such a touristy place. Not a lot of veggies options. Bagels were honestly overhyped, I guess it can depend on your taste but we found them very dense & not fluffy at all. The filling was good though.

Overrated.
If you're a tourist, you can only pay with cash. You can only use debit if you're Canadian.
On the other hand, the only good thing is the bagel dough. The filling is nothing special, without much flavour.

We went on a weekday around 10am & the place was pretty empty. We got the traditional on sesame & it was amazing. Definitely better than any bagel you can get in Toronto.

Great service & staff as well.

It's Canadian Debit or Cash only.

No gluten free options. Only take Cad debit card, cash (USD or Cad). Bagels are freshly made, lots of varieties

I love cinnamon raisin bagels & I was happy that St-Viateur's version of it is easily one of my favorites. It's way up there with Tal's Bagels (New York). People have said that Montreal bagels have a special taste & I agree. I'm glad we tried the ones from this place because the first time I tried Montreal bagels from a different place (from our trip last year), I was disappointed. But St-Viateur redeemed my opinion of Montreal bagels. My husband, whose not a bagel lover, thinks this one is really good - & that's saying a lot.

We waited for about 10-15 minutes to get a table but if you're taking your bagels to go, there's no wait at all. Also, this store only accepts cash payments or Canadian debit cards. There's a bank a few feet from the store so you can grab some cash from their ATM if you don't normally cash like us.

I prefer this location to Rosemont location, because it takes debit card as well as cash & has bagel sandwiches💯 there was a long queue during summer, but this time afternoon, no queue & fast serve!
& finally got sesame oil this time !!
Bagels itself doesn't charge extra tax unless it's a sandwich. LOVE IT ❤?
& somehow all dressed (everything) bagel is always warm hahah

Ever since this place was featured on the Netflix show Somebody Feed Phil, I've been wanting to visit-& the hype definitely doesn't disappoint. They have a variety of bagel sandwiches, both veg & non-veg, & my favourite has to be the fig & cream cheese one. It's on the sweeter side but pairs perfectly with an Americano.

This is a cash-only or debit location, so plan accordingly. The ambience is your classic cozy café vibe, & the patio is the best part.

If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of how the bagels are freshly made on-site. I genuinely enjoyed watching the entire process. The staff is super friendly & adds to the charm of the place.

It's a MUST to come here every time you visit Montreal.

The downside is they don't accept credit card only Canadian debit cards. Other than that, the service & the food is P-E-R-F-E-C-T! I've never liked bagels & after today, I realize I've never had a real one until today 🥰

Outstanding bagels. Very friendly staff. Note to international visitors: they don't take credit & they only accept debit from Canadian banks. So, bring CDN $s. For our entire week in Montreal, this is the only place I needed cash. But, it was nice to see what Canadian currency looks like these days (pretty sophisticated & intricate, with a different feeling than'paper' money)

Well ..it's one of the touristy things to do in Montreal I guess.. nothing fancy.. it's a cash only or Canadian debit card place.. it was not my most favourite bagel but.. like I said something to do as a tourist.. the line for the dine-in was super long.. we went just for the bagles(take out) & that line moved pretty fast.. I think we waited for like 5 mins.. Montreal bagel is smaller & denser than the other bagels I've tried or made.. so this is something you can do just for the experience

THIS IS A CASH ONLY ESTABLISHMENT (Canadian OR US cash) They also take Canadian Debit cards (?) - there is some sort of debit card system but not for foreign cards. Secondly - if you want bagel sandwiches this is the only location that does it. The original St. Viateur bagel location on Rue St. Viateur DOES not do sandwiches. Overall, I thought the bagel was okay - we were told to ask to order whatever was the freshest bagel, for us that was the sesame. It was cool to see them hand rolling the bagels. The bagels are not warm for the sandwiches. I thought the traditional bagel sandwich (smoked salmon, cream cheese, capers) was alright - honestly felt like the bagel was missing flavoring (likely salt). The line outside wasn't too long, maybe took about 20 minutes to get inside & sit & eat. Not terrible. There are two lines outside, the one to the right (when facing the door) is for takeout bagels ONLY (no sandwiches) the one on the left is for sandwiches & sitting in the restaurant (can also do takeout, but you still need to stand on the line to the left). Last note, if you are HUNGRY these bagels are quite light. You can definitely eat more than one if you want to be full.
