St-Viateur Bagel & Café Montreal Restaurant: Menu, Reviews & Reserve (2026)
BagelsCaféSandwichesBreakfastCateringFood Truck
Since 1957, St-Viateur Bagel has been a central part of the culture and daily life of Montreal. Its legendary landmark bagel shop operates 24/7 and sells over 1,000 dozen bagels a day. St-Viateur Bagel was founded by Myer Lewkowicz who brought his now famous recipe from Eastern Europe. The art of bagel making means hand rolling each one and baking them in a wood-burning oven. The current owner, Joe Morena, with over 45 years of experience in the bagel business, ensures that the traditions at St-Viateur Bagel continue to be respected. Over half a century, this family business has grown to include 4 bakeries and 2 Bagel Cafés in Montreal. Come and visit us soon or order online today. St-Viateur Bagel & Café Mont-Royal is located in the bustling "Plateau". The avenue is lined with trendy cafés, restaurants and specialty food stores, which contribute to the district's European flair. The café menu offers a number of bagel sandwiches, salads, and a wide variety of specialty coffees.

Review Summary

Reviews describe St-Viateur Bagel & Café as a quintessential Montreal bagel experience, with fresh, wood-fired bagels that are chewy and slightly sweet and offered in many varieties, often enjoyed with cream cheese or smoked salmon and in simple bagel sandwiches. The sesame, rosemary-salt and poppy are frequent favorites, and the bagels are praised for their quality and authentic Montreal character. A common caveat is the long lines and wait times, especially at peak times, though staff are described as fast, friendly and accommodating and the atmosphere remains welcoming. Payment is typically cash and Canadian debit, with US cards not accepted at many locations. Most reviews say the experience is worth the wait and a must-visit for bagel lovers visiting Montreal, though a few find the hype a bit inflated or note occasional inconsistency in freshness or value. Overall, it’s a cozy, bustling spot where you can see bagels being made on site and leave with a satisfying, classic Montreal breakfast or lunch.

Amazing traditional bagel & orange juice. Way better than any bagel I have had before. Waited in line for 1 hour but it was definitely worth it! Would recommend for anyone visiting Montreal.

The traditional sandwich is tasteless. Of all the places I've had a bagel lox this is by far the worst. I came here expecting a wow & aside from maybe picking up some fresh bagels I'd never eat their version of a sandwich again.

Si c'est ça les meilleurs bagels ever...🫢rien d'exceptionnel, portion assez petite, pas de frites, rien pour accompagner... service moyen. Bon mais vraiment pas exceptionnel

Amazing experience, great food & great service. Went on a Sunday & had to wait 30 minutes to get in but it was worth it. The bagels are amazing & having them on a sandwich was very good. There was a much shorter line if you wanted just a plain bagel. Once we got into the store & ordered it didn't take long to get our food. It was really cool to see them making all the bagels in the oven & cutting up the dough.

Bagels: 5/5 Staff: 1/5 (very rude staff, we ordered an Uber pickup & they were super snotty about it, commenting that it's 45% more. We had our own reasons for not wanting to wait over an hour for some bagels -extremely delicious but I prefer saving. Time where ever I can ) Wait time: -1/5

Love the bagels, best in the world IMO. I just can't wrap my head around this being a cash-only business in 2024, especially with the amount of foreign tourists coming through here & the extensive list of merchandise they sell. Is there any reason (beyond tax fraud) that makes sense?

Had a plain onion bagel & i don't see what all the excitement is about. The onions were burnt & the bagel was skinny. I'm going to try Fairmount to see if there is a difference.

Tasty tuna spread bagel, but $9 is a tad pricey.
