St-Viateur Bagel & Café Montreal Restaurant: Menu, Reviews & Reserve (2026)
BagelsCaféSandwichesBreakfastCateringFood Truck
Since 1957, St-Viateur Bagel has been a central part of the culture and daily life of Montreal. Its legendary landmark bagel shop operates 24/7 and sells over 1,000 dozen bagels a day. St-Viateur Bagel was founded by Myer Lewkowicz who brought his now famous recipe from Eastern Europe. The art of bagel making means hand rolling each one and baking them in a wood-burning oven. The current owner, Joe Morena, with over 45 years of experience in the bagel business, ensures that the traditions at St-Viateur Bagel continue to be respected. Over half a century, this family business has grown to include 4 bakeries and 2 Bagel Cafés in Montreal. Come and visit us soon or order online today. St-Viateur Bagel & Café Mont-Royal is located in the bustling "Plateau". The avenue is lined with trendy cafés, restaurants and specialty food stores, which contribute to the district's European flair. The café menu offers a number of bagel sandwiches, salads, and a wide variety of specialty coffees.

Review Summary

Reviews describe St-Viateur Bagel & Café as a quintessential Montreal bagel experience, with fresh, wood-fired bagels that are chewy and slightly sweet and offered in many varieties, often enjoyed with cream cheese or smoked salmon and in simple bagel sandwiches. The sesame, rosemary-salt and poppy are frequent favorites, and the bagels are praised for their quality and authentic Montreal character. A common caveat is the long lines and wait times, especially at peak times, though staff are described as fast, friendly and accommodating and the atmosphere remains welcoming. Payment is typically cash and Canadian debit, with US cards not accepted at many locations. Most reviews say the experience is worth the wait and a must-visit for bagel lovers visiting Montreal, though a few find the hype a bit inflated or note occasional inconsistency in freshness or value. Overall, it’s a cozy, bustling spot where you can see bagels being made on site and leave with a satisfying, classic Montreal breakfast or lunch.

Being from Texas, of course, this was at the top of my Montreal list. The "Traditional" did not disappoint. Fresh bagel with salmon & cream cheese. I seriously could have this almost every day.

Lovely atmosphere, tasty bagel! What more can you ask for? The texture of the bagels here, & generally in Montreal, is very different from what we have in Toronto, & I love it here. We ordered the traditional bagel with smoked salmon & cream cheese, as well as the all seeds bagel & rosemary & sea salt bagel. Update: We visited here again after our delightful first experience & tried out different bagel sandwiches this time. We also bought some bagels to take home. We ordered the Le Steak, Wow!, & Le Joe Bagel. All were very delicious, with the Le Steak being our favorite.

The service was fast, the food was great. We got the Traditional & Wow! I would recommend the traditional over the Wow. If you are lactose intolerance, beware as they give generous amount of cheese in their bagels.

Don't fuss about the long lines on the weekend, it moves very fast. The bagels are delicious! I had the traditional, which was amazing. The cream cheese is super creamy. The service is spectacular, they easily accommodated our family of six. We will be back!! Merci!!

As a devoted acolyte to the divine altar of the bagel, I relish the opportunity to take the pilgrimage to St. Viateur Bagel & Café. This sacred journey culminates in the divine experience of savoring their heavenly bagels, where each bite is a taste of perfection. They emerge fresh from the traditional wood oven & warm not just my body but my spirit. There is no smell like that of the boulangerie, no taste like the sweet bagel, & no solace like a bag of warm bagels from St. Viateur.

This place may have been an institution, but it's way past its heyday. Today it's overrated & doesn't deserve the hype it's garnered. The bagel itself is fine but all the sandwiches are lacking. Take the traditional for instance: the lox is barely super market quality, tomatoes are old & mealy, & theirs no sense of craft or proportions of the ingredients. Skip this place & find your bagels elsewhere.

I ordered the Traditional bagel sandwich & it was so good! Staff were really friendly & accommodating. I would love to come back & try the other sandwiches ♥️ Please note that this is an extremely busy place so prepare to line up!

Small charming cafe with exceptional bagels & wonderful staff. This place was recommended to me on our flight & absolutely did not disappoint!! My daughter who has never enjoyed bagels had a plain with Nutella & wanted more. My son had the club blt with pesto & loved it. My traditional was excellent. I 100% wish this place was in Houston. Good news they do deliver in the states through Goldbelly ❤️❤️

Drove all the way from Ottawa just to slam a traditional lox. The freshness & flavour can't be understated. The tote bag & bagel merch alone deserves five stars! Merci beaucoup.

I have to admit that I think of the St. Viateur bagel as the more refined northern cousin of the traditional NYC bagel. It is more delicate; not quite as chewy, & a little bit thinner (so no need for the diet-concious to scoop out the middle. Mine was nicely controlled with sesame seeds. My "traditional had excellent lox & was piled high with tomato slices, onions, capers, & (of course!) wonderful cream cheese.

Traditional bagel was good, with all of its ingrendients fresh. WOW! bagel on the other hand, was not edible, very oily & had some odd type of seasoning. Cash & debit card only
