St-Viateur Bagel & Café Montreal Restaurant: Menu, Reviews & Reserve (2026)
BagelsCaféSandwichesBreakfastCateringFood Truck
Since 1957, St-Viateur Bagel has been a central part of the culture and daily life of Montreal. Its legendary landmark bagel shop operates 24/7 and sells over 1,000 dozen bagels a day. St-Viateur Bagel was founded by Myer Lewkowicz who brought his now famous recipe from Eastern Europe. The art of bagel making means hand rolling each one and baking them in a wood-burning oven. The current owner, Joe Morena, with over 45 years of experience in the bagel business, ensures that the traditions at St-Viateur Bagel continue to be respected. Over half a century, this family business has grown to include 4 bakeries and 2 Bagel Cafés in Montreal. Come and visit us soon or order online today. St-Viateur Bagel & Café Mont-Royal is located in the bustling "Plateau". The avenue is lined with trendy cafés, restaurants and specialty food stores, which contribute to the district's European flair. The café menu offers a number of bagel sandwiches, salads, and a wide variety of specialty coffees.

Review Summary

Reviews describe St-Viateur Bagel & Café as a quintessential Montreal bagel experience, with fresh, wood-fired bagels that are chewy and slightly sweet and offered in many varieties, often enjoyed with cream cheese or smoked salmon and in simple bagel sandwiches. The sesame, rosemary-salt and poppy are frequent favorites, and the bagels are praised for their quality and authentic Montreal character. A common caveat is the long lines and wait times, especially at peak times, though staff are described as fast, friendly and accommodating and the atmosphere remains welcoming. Payment is typically cash and Canadian debit, with US cards not accepted at many locations. Most reviews say the experience is worth the wait and a must-visit for bagel lovers visiting Montreal, though a few find the hype a bit inflated or note occasional inconsistency in freshness or value. Overall, it’s a cozy, bustling spot where you can see bagels being made on site and leave with a satisfying, classic Montreal breakfast or lunch.

AMAZING bagels 💜🥯☕️ absolutely worth the wait! The line moves quickly & theres indoor & outdoor seating; you can also get takeaway & eat on the street thats closed to traffic in the summer. Id recommend the salmon spread instead of cream cheese, & be sure to take away a few bagels on your way out! No gf options but they do have vegan cream cheese & sandwich options.

Amazing traditional bagel & orange juice. Way better than any bagel I have had before. Waited in line for 1 hour but it was definitely worth it! Would recommend for anyone visiting Montreal.

The service was fast, the food was great. We got the Traditional & Wow! I would recommend the traditional over the Wow. If you are lactose intolerance, beware as they give generous amount of cheese in their bagels.

A must when in Montreal. I got the salmon & capers which was recommended to me, it wasn't my preference but I wasn't mad! They have lots of options & different bagels, came by early for a less busy experience

Delicious bagels, top-tier service. Tables were full when we got there but only took a few minutes to get seated. They were checking on the customers waiting customers & the service was very quick. Highly recommend

We had the Le coco bagel & the Breakfast bagel. Expect about a 30-40 min wait if you intend on dining in today. The staff do their best to rush people in & out, but I'm not sure if I recommend going out of your way for it. The prices are slightly steep considering you could get a bagel in NYC for half the price & 10x more flavor. It is cash only!! The surrounding neighborhood is nice for a a stroll after as well. I was slightly disappointed in the coffee too. But glad I got to see if the hype was worth it.

Wow, fantastic place. It was recommended to us by a friend & we're happy we went. We tried the sesame bagel with chive cream cheese which was crunchy with a slight smokey flavour on the outside & a warm chewy inside. Cream cheese was ultra soft & luxurious with good flavour. We also tried the maple bagel with apple cinnamon cream cheese. Both were deadly & delicious. Not to mention the service! Above & beyond!

We've been at the restaurant a few times now, & it was time for us to return to have another bagel sandwich. Actually, what made us go & visit was the publicity on the new bagel that was being sold without the hole in the middle there was a lot of controversy around it, & we wanted to go & give it a try for ourselves. Funny enough it does cook way differently as The texture is soft throughout. It's no longer a bagel with crispyness all around it's actually really soft & should not even be considered a bagel really. Anyway, we had our bagel sandwiches. We tried the new' bagel' & it was a fun time out. Where: St-Viateur Bagel & Café, Plateau Montreal What: A café & bagel place How was it: Service is average & a little confusing at times. The delicious St-Viateur bagel is what saves this place. No Bagel = no discovering destinations to come & eat. But seriously, if you are not in the mood to go out to a restaurant - you can simply buy the bagels & stay in. Grade: Eli = 4, Serge = 4- Recommend : The Bagels saves this place !

Listen to me. RUN. DO NOT WALK!!! I am not one to visit places that are hyped up but yall got it right with this one. The Le Steak bagel least. I would order solely that over & over again (on a rosemary & sea salt bagel). I was visiting town during a layover & decide to explore. A friend from Toronto recommend I check out this place, & some locals concurred it would be worth a visit before heading back to the airport. So glad I did!!!! Excited to return next time in in Montreal. The lemonade was also really good. The food looks basic as hell but the flavor is THERE. Ooof it a so good. 😭😭 10 out of 10.

Small charming cafe with exceptional bagels & wonderful staff. This place was recommended to me on our flight & absolutely did not disappoint!! My daughter who has never enjoyed bagels had a plain with Nutella & wanted more. My son had the club blt with pesto & loved it. My traditional was excellent. I 100% wish this place was in Houston. Good news they do deliver in the states through Goldbelly ❤️❤️

We always get some when we're in the city. We got 5 dozen to go, the guys there were so very helpful, gave us the necessary bags for packing, & gave us the baker's dozen of course. The aroma is intoxicating right when you walk in. 100% recommend when you're in the city!

Stopped in around 11 this morning. I was on my own & had luggage, which I was able to store by the coat rack which was nice. They have eat-in or take out, two separate lines. You're shown which table to sit at when you're in line, as it is counter style ordering. I ordered the smoked meat bagel sandwich & added some veggies which were free, to my surprise. Caramel latte was practically perfect. Staff were friendly, energetic, & the owner or general manager was on-site helping with the flow, as it was quite busy. I ordered a six pack of bagels to go after my meal, a mixture of flavours & was given both a paper bag & a plastic bag (appreciated since I am traveling). I even asked for a small sticker on my way out, & the staff were more than willing to give me a few. Would definitely recommend St. Viateur!! The only comment I have is to beware of the hours, as the "kitchen" hours are when they start & stop all sandwiches & meals (6pm).

A friend recommended this spot during our travels in Montreal, glad we checked it out. The food was delicious & the floor manager runs a tight ship with traffic flow. At this spot you can order to go, sit & eat or order bulk & merch. Only takes cash (USD, CA or CA debit, no credit cards). Definitely worth checking out.

Awesome bagel with a great price. I really recommend the bagel steak. The average price for the bagels is $13 plus taxes.
The spot is very popular, so be sure to arrive early or be patient to wait a little in line.
