St-Viateur Bagel & Café Montreal Restaurant: Menu, Reviews & Reserve (2026)
BagelsCaféSandwichesBreakfastCateringFood Truck
Since 1957, St-Viateur Bagel has been a central part of the culture and daily life of Montreal. Its legendary landmark bagel shop operates 24/7 and sells over 1,000 dozen bagels a day. St-Viateur Bagel was founded by Myer Lewkowicz who brought his now famous recipe from Eastern Europe. The art of bagel making means hand rolling each one and baking them in a wood-burning oven. The current owner, Joe Morena, with over 45 years of experience in the bagel business, ensures that the traditions at St-Viateur Bagel continue to be respected. Over half a century, this family business has grown to include 4 bakeries and 2 Bagel Cafés in Montreal. Come and visit us soon or order online today. St-Viateur Bagel & Café Mont-Royal is located in the bustling "Plateau". The avenue is lined with trendy cafés, restaurants and specialty food stores, which contribute to the district's European flair. The café menu offers a number of bagel sandwiches, salads, and a wide variety of specialty coffees.

Review Summary

Reviews describe St-Viateur Bagel & Café as a quintessential Montreal bagel experience, with fresh, wood-fired bagels that are chewy and slightly sweet and offered in many varieties, often enjoyed with cream cheese or smoked salmon and in simple bagel sandwiches. The sesame, rosemary-salt and poppy are frequent favorites, and the bagels are praised for their quality and authentic Montreal character. A common caveat is the long lines and wait times, especially at peak times, though staff are described as fast, friendly and accommodating and the atmosphere remains welcoming. Payment is typically cash and Canadian debit, with US cards not accepted at many locations. Most reviews say the experience is worth the wait and a must-visit for bagel lovers visiting Montreal, though a few find the hype a bit inflated or note occasional inconsistency in freshness or value. Overall, it’s a cozy, bustling spot where you can see bagels being made on site and leave with a satisfying, classic Montreal breakfast or lunch.

Felt like the staff was more trying to get through their orders than actually putting some effort into their bagels. This huge chunk of onion was in my bagel not even the end of it being cut off where to root was attached. The cream cheese was only spread on one side which made it go everywhere from the amount they put in. Spread it on both sides in my opinion would easily resolve the huge mess that came with the bagel. Friendly staff! Everything was freshly made, you can see the bagels being made in front of you & put in their bagel oven so you know it's fresh. Huge line for an ok bagel. Also make sure you have Canadian cash or Canadian debit card only. They don't accept visas. 2023 surely with the amount of business this place is generating they can afford to pay for credit card service.

I must've gone outside of peak times (around 4pm) because I didn't have to wait at all to place my order & my bagel came out really fast. Only issue is that, probably because I came outside of peak hours, the bagel didn't feel very fresh. I ordered Le Coco & the bagel only had mayo on one side as opposed to both, which made it feel more dry. The filling weren't seasoned well/were lacking flavour or salt so I was a little underwhelmed. The bagel rotation during busy hours probably makes for fresher bagels so, although there's a longer wait, it's maybe worth sacrificing time for freshness. Service was nice. They do in fact only take Canadian debit or cash, which was no problem for me but just something to keep in mind.

Wow crazy good bagels. Fresh out of the wood oven & lots of options. A bit expensive for a small scoop of cream cheese (generic brand made), but the combination of the fresh bagel & cream cheese is unreal. A must try when in Montreal! Remember that this place doesn't take credit card, debit & cash only.

A friend recommended this spot during our travels in Montreal, glad we checked it out. The food was delicious & the floor manager runs a tight ship with traffic flow. At this spot you can order to go, sit & eat or order bulk & merch. Only takes cash (USD, CA or CA debit, no credit cards). Definitely worth checking out.
