St-Viateur Bagel & Café Montreal Restaurant: Menu, Reviews & Reserve (2026)
BagelsCaféSandwichesBreakfastCateringFood Truck
Since 1957, St-Viateur Bagel has been a central part of the culture and daily life of Montreal. Its legendary landmark bagel shop operates 24/7 and sells over 1,000 dozen bagels a day. St-Viateur Bagel was founded by Myer Lewkowicz who brought his now famous recipe from Eastern Europe. The art of bagel making means hand rolling each one and baking them in a wood-burning oven. The current owner, Joe Morena, with over 45 years of experience in the bagel business, ensures that the traditions at St-Viateur Bagel continue to be respected. Over half a century, this family business has grown to include 4 bakeries and 2 Bagel Cafés in Montreal. Come and visit us soon or order online today. St-Viateur Bagel & Café Mont-Royal is located in the bustling "Plateau". The avenue is lined with trendy cafés, restaurants and specialty food stores, which contribute to the district's European flair. The café menu offers a number of bagel sandwiches, salads, and a wide variety of specialty coffees.

Review Summary

Reviews describe St-Viateur Bagel & Café as a quintessential Montreal bagel experience, with fresh, wood-fired bagels that are chewy and slightly sweet and offered in many varieties, often enjoyed with cream cheese or smoked salmon and in simple bagel sandwiches. The sesame, rosemary-salt and poppy are frequent favorites, and the bagels are praised for their quality and authentic Montreal character. A common caveat is the long lines and wait times, especially at peak times, though staff are described as fast, friendly and accommodating and the atmosphere remains welcoming. Payment is typically cash and Canadian debit, with US cards not accepted at many locations. Most reviews say the experience is worth the wait and a must-visit for bagel lovers visiting Montreal, though a few find the hype a bit inflated or note occasional inconsistency in freshness or value. Overall, it’s a cozy, bustling spot where you can see bagels being made on site and leave with a satisfying, classic Montreal breakfast or lunch.

Waited 15 minutes to get a barely-toasted bagel+cream-cheese for take out (on a Monday). The bagels are fine, average. Staff is nice.

Wow crazy good bagels. Fresh out of the wood oven & lots of options. A bit expensive for a small scoop of cream cheese (generic brand made), but the combination of the fresh bagel & cream cheese is unreal. A must try when in Montreal! Remember that this place doesn't take credit card, debit & cash only.

Wow, fantastic place. It was recommended to us by a friend & we're happy we went. We tried the sesame bagel with chive cream cheese which was crunchy with a slight smokey flavour on the outside & a warm chewy inside. Cream cheese was ultra soft & luxurious with good flavour. We also tried the maple bagel with apple cinnamon cream cheese. Both were deadly & delicious. Not to mention the service! Above & beyond!

It was a good experience, but I totally think it was over hyped. The bagel was bland, & had no taste. The sandwiches lacked seasoning, & probably the best thing was the fig & cheese sandwich. I wouldn't try it again. It was good to see it & experience it, but I don't think I would go for it again if I would like a satisfying bite.

If you're craving a bagel experience that's like a cream cheese avalanche, this place has you covered! Seriously, the amount of cream cheese on their sandwiches could build a second bagel tower. But hey, if you're into that kind of thing, go for it! Just be prepared to wait longer than it takes to watch a Lord of the Rings marathon. I mean, I'm pretty sure Frodo could've destroyed the One Ring twice in the time it takes to get your order here. On a more serious note, their bagels are fresh, I just didn't appreciate that I got a bitter aftertaste of burnt onion/garlic on my bagel but overall fine!

I have to admit that I think of the St. Viateur bagel as the more refined northern cousin of the traditional NYC bagel. It is more delicate; not quite as chewy, & a little bit thinner (so no need for the diet-concious to scoop out the middle. Mine was nicely controlled with sesame seeds. My "traditional had excellent lox & was piled high with tomato slices, onions, capers, & (of course!) wonderful cream cheese.

Totally overrated for a remote place that makes you go an extra mile to bring them cash only FOR A BAGEL, not some culinary delight that will blow your mind. Just a bagel for $13-15, a tiny piece of lax under a slab of cream cheese. I can do the same at home without jumping the hoops & looking for an ATM.

Good little breakfast place. Simple menu but good. I had the smoked meat bagel, it was very good but unoriginal. My boyfriend had the bagel with marinated eggplants, goat cheese & sun dried tomatos. That one was amazing.
The coffees were also very good.
Service was abit slow. It took about 20 minutes to take out order. At least we got the food quickly.
