About

Smoke Meat Pete serves authentic Montreal-style smoked meat, cured and steamed to tender perfection. The menu centers on thick-cut, hand-carved brisket served on rye bread with yellow mustard and a signature pickle. Beyond the iconic smoked meat, the kitchen prepares flame-grilled burgers made from premium beef patties topped with classic fixings. The dining space features an unpretentious, casual environment designed for high-volume service and efficient delivery of hearty comfort food. Patrons encounter a straightforward approach to American-style barbecue traditions with a focus on generous portions and consistent flavor profiles. Every plate highlights a commitment to traditional preparation methods that prioritize texture and seasoning over modern culinary complexity. This establishment functions as a dedicated destination for those seeking a robust, no-frills encounter with high-quality smoked proteins and savory, well-executed grilled staples.

Review Summary

Smoke Meat Pete is widely considered a staple destination for authentic Montreal style smoked meat, offering a unique, rustic atmosphere frequently complemented by live blues music. While many patrons praise the tender, flavorful meat, generous portions, and high quality of the sides like fries and coleslaw, the overall experience can be polarized by factors such as fluctuating prices, occasional inconsistencies in meat texture, and a loud environment that may not suit everyone. The ordering process, which involves paying at the counter before being served, is sometimes described as confusing for first time visitors, yet the staff is generally noted for being friendly and efficient. Despite some debates regarding value and volume, the restaurant remains a beloved landmark for those traveling through the area who appreciate a lively, character filled dining experience.

I brought my cousin from out of town here to have some promised good Montreal smoked meat. We opted to come here because it is a historic place for good smoked meat & it's closer than downtown. The prices we're reasonable, the fries are amazing, the smoked meat good but the portion seems smaller than expected & mine had too much fatty meat...which made me wonder why I wasn't asked what cut of meat I prefer? Maybe it's my fault that I forgot to ask or maybe you don't have a choice on what you get 🤷 Too bad because otherwise it was a nice venue if you like reminiscing & going back in time 😊 This is the perfect experience for an original Quebec highway casse-croute/pataterie & smoked meat venue to bring people from out of town, & also for the locals! Note that you must order & pay first & then pick a table where they will serve you the food. I will go back & try to get a lean cut next time!

I make a pit stop here on every visit to Montreal since the cuts of meat are amazing, & the taste is simply lovely!

It might seem a little pricy, but the sandwich & fries are worth every penny.

The best part is that you can also buy the meat & bread to make sandwiches at home!

Another pit stop, another delicious meal!

They have live music nights & quick, friendly service.

It's totally worth the visit.

I've been going to Smoked Meat Pete's for many years, & I want to start by saying that I genuinely like their smoked meat - I still do. The flavor, seasoning, & overall taste are what made this place famous, & that part has remained consistent over time.
However, it's hard to ignore the changes that have happened recently, & unfortunately not for the better. The portion sizes have gone down dramatically, while prices have gone up noticeably. When you're charging premium prices for a smoked meat sandwich & a poutine, customers naturally expect the portions to remain generous, or at the very least consistent with what they were known for.
What's disappointing is that the value just isn't there anymore. Paying that much & walking away feeling like the sandwich is noticeably smaller than it used to be takes away from the experience, no matter how good the taste still is. The same goes for the poutine - higher price, smaller portion.
Taste-wise, the smoked meat is still good, but honestly, I'm now getting very similar - & in some cases even better - flavor at Markies in Ottawa, where the portions are bigger & the prices are more reasonable. When another spot can match the taste while offering better value, it really makes you think twice.
I don't say this lightly because Smoked Meat Pete's has been a go-to spot for me for a long time. I want to keep supporting them, but portion shrinkage combined with rising prices is hard to justify. If you're going to increase prices, at least maintain the portion sizes that built your reputation in the first place.
The food is still tasty, but value matters - & right now, that balance feels off.

Smoked Meat Pete is one of those places that feels timeless. We tried the classic smoked meat sandwich, the full rack of ribs, & the smoked meat poutine, & everything was excellent. The smoked meat is rich, tender, & full of flavour, easily among the best you can find in Montreal & the surrounding area. Honestly, if this place were located downtown, it would probably be considered the best smoked meat in Montreal.

The ribs were generous & well done, & the poutine with smoked meat was comforting & satisfying. Their coleslaw is also very good & pairs perfectly with the main dishes.

The atmosphere is friendly & welcoming, & you can really feel that this is a place people have been coming to for years. It's always busy, especially in the summer when lineups are common, which says a lot. They also have a varied menu with things like pasta & ice cream, making it great for families & groups.

If you want to experience truly great smoked meat at a place that's stood the test of time, Smoked Meat Pete is absolutely worth the trip.
