Reviews describe Smoke Meat Pete as a legendary Montreal staple with generous portions of tender, flavorful smoked meat, a standout poutine and fries, and a lively bluesy atmosphere powered by live bands that draw crowds of locals and visitors alike. The experience is often praised for friendly staff, efficient service, and a welcoming vibe, though several comments note rising prices and, in some cases, reduced portion sizes or inconsistent meat quality, especially for lean cuts or fattier options. Dining in can be crowded and ordering at the counter is common, with takeout and to go serving as popular alternatives, and the overall value debated as prices climb, while many reviewers insist the meat, smoke and authentic ambience make Smoke Meat Pete worth the trip, especially when a show is on.
One of the best smoked meat spots. No reservations needed, however it's almost always full. Service is great, whether you speak French or English. Live band performances sometimes. I recommend the ribs, just get the entire rack, it's really good.
À mon avis, les meilleures côtes levées de Montréal, vous ne pouvez pas repartir sans les essayer. un endroit très sympa, de la bonne bière, & j'étais très curieux de voir leurs soirées avec musique live, c'est quelque chose à répéte
I compared this Smoked meat to others I've had in the Montréal area. This one ranked in the top 3 considering many aspects. I was a bit put off with the amount of black pepper used which dominating over the delicious flavour of the meat. Worth a try though.
I was told this was the best spot for smoked meat in the Montreal area & I believe that to be true! Great food & fast service. Opens at 9am, but won't serve food until 10:30am which was a little confusing but none the less, worth the wait. Will return in the future!
Food is very good but expensive. You can't sit at a table unless you're 3 or more people , whether the restaurant is busy or not. The waitress somehow gave our food to someone else despite us sitting directly to the right of the pickup window. When this was brought to ger attention she didn't seem to be bothered. She definitely wasn't apologetic. The cooks noticed & got us our order very soon after.

Excellent smoked meat.
Mixed opinions about the takeout experience... I''ll start with the good. Upon arrival there were some pretty extravagant decorations & lights, very nice! The lady working the cash who I assume was the owner, very kind, outgoing & welcoming. She took the time to explain which packaged meat & size for takeout would be appropriate for my group. Appreciated. However, a number of things could be improved & it's not even about the food. First, takeout is advertised outside the restaurant, & the digital sign in the parking lot says to call to place the order. After calling, they say you can only order if you physically walk into the store to order, & dont take phone orders. The area for takeout feels like a crowded airport, long queue & minimum space to wait for your order, while customers & staff are uncomfortably trying to weave around you. This issue could be solved if you are permitted to call ahead. Second, the menu for rack of ribs takeout says it's for cold takeout only. I ordered the ribs with the assumption that it wasn't heated (suitable for the transport during a long drive). Maybe i should have clarified, but I did not know it was an option given the menu says COLD ONLY for takeout orders for ribs. Anyhow, when I got my order from the wait staff, it was cooked/ heated. I asked the young gentleman if it should be packaged cold, as that is what i thought the menu said. He gave a condescending response pointing out the obvious saying the other item i was holding was cold, but the ribs are hot (no kidding, I can feel that with my own hands right?) No apologies, & rude response. In fact i did not care much tbh if it was cold or hot, but rather was put off by how the staff responded. I didn't make a big deal of it & left. Just wanted to point out the takeout setup could lead to misaligned expectations of what customers are getting vs ordered , & the way it was dealt by the staff was just flat out rude. I dont think I would return regardless of how the food tastes.
The food was fantastic, as usual. Atmosphere & service excellent. Please, please get rid of those awful mustard & ketchup containers. You can spend half your meal in trying to get product out of these. A simple squeeze bottle would be great.
