Romies is described as a stylish, vibey spot in Old Montreal with a beautiful terrace that many reviews say is perfect for dates or celebrations. The service is often praised for being friendly and attentive, though a few experiences mention slow or inconsistent service, especially on busy nights. The food is generally regarded as delicious and well presented, with frequent highlights including fried zucchini, pasta alla zozzona, crudo, focaccia, rib eye, and a standout dessert scene featuring chocolate cake or blackout cake. Some readers feel the prices are high for the portions and value, and a number of dishes arrive not as hot as expected or can be a little heavy on richness. The ambiance, decor, and open kitchen vibe create a memorable experience that many say elevates the meal, though the noise level and crowds can be a downside for some. Across reviews, Romies is seen as a place with strong positives in food and atmosphere, and a willingness to return for the terrace, cocktails, and signature dishes, while the occasional critique centers on price, consistency and service during peak times.
Loved the experience. Drinks were great, everything that I had was a big hit & super tasty. Great vibe amazing time & the team serving us was very cool!
Personally I found this place pretty mid. It's a place to go for the vibes & appetizers than the actual food. The fried zucchini was delicious! I would go back anytime for that. Everything else was super meh. The pasta was actually not that great. There was so much cheese that it was a bit disgusting to eat & the flavours were nothing special. Very basic. I know the pasta has gone very viral & I had very high hopes but overall it was super disappointing. Any influencer/content creator that pushed this pasta forward has definitely lost all credibility. Overall I would only go back to enjoy the fried zucchini & grab food+dessert elsewhere. You can buy a whole cake for the price you pay for a slice of cake…which again is nothing special or worth paying for.
honestly don't write bad reviews often, but this experience deserves one.
I chose Romies because I liked the restaurant. I've been there before, enjoyed the food & the vibe, & trusted them enough to plan a surprise dinner for a special occasion. That was clearly a mistake.
I reached out well in advance to coordinate something very simple. I contacted them multiple times:
- via Instagram DM
- via email
- & even in person, where I explained everything clearly
Despite all of this, I received no response for over a week. No confirmation, no follow-up, nothing. Planning a surprise is already stressful, & being completely ignored by a restaurant you're trying to work with makes it unnecessarily frustrating.
What's worse is that even after explaining everything clearly - including very basic, low-effort requests - absolutely nothing was done. We specifically asked for candles on the table. This was mentioned more than once, through different channels, & even acknowledged in person. When we arrived?
No candles. No preparation. No effort.
The surprise was essentially ruined, not because the request was complicated, but because the restaurant simply did not care enough to follow through.
If you don't want to accommodate special occasions, that's fine - just say so. If you're too busy to respond, say that too. But ignoring messages, failing to communicate, & then completely dropping the ball on the day itself is unacceptable, especially from a place that presents itself as polished & attentive.
This was especially disappointing because I went out of my way to choose Romies out of loyalty. Instead of feeling welcomed, I felt dismissed & overlooked.
Food & ambiance don't matter if the most basic level of professionalism is missing. If you're planning anything important, do yourself a favor & don't rely on this place to handle it.
Busy yet chill vibes. Low lights atmosphere. They have bocci ball in the back, the toilets are outside of the restaurant which is a little odd but it works. Their drinks were good. Price point is high but the quality matches it. The rib eye steak was perfectly cooked & seasoned. The fries were made in house & tasty. The ceasar salad was okay. I would go with another options in the future, instead of salad.
It's funny I kept hearing mixed reviews about this place & TikTok kept pushing it on me, but I'm really glad I came here spontaneously with my girlfriends. I actually really enjoyed the experience! The venue is beautiful & open-air, super chill vibes. I didn't order food, but my friend did, & my drinks were solid. Bartenders were nice too. Definitely coming back to try the food next time.
The food looked great but fell short on taste, with flavors that were too sweet & didn't match the high cost (very very pricey). Presentation seemed to take priority over flavor. Service was slow & inconsistent; while the waitress was helpful, she also seemed impatient at times. The dining area was very noisy, with echoes making conversation difficult. Staff didn't appear particularly enthusiastic, which impacted the overall vibe. I wouldn't return.
The food is excellent ==> Kiss for the Chef!
The service was good ==> Great service, with a pinch of'argh! another boomer couple! why am I wasting my life here!'.
Overall vibe ==> 'Cheesy-boomer-mid-90's-decor-impression-of-high-end-USA-male-tourist-customers'
The restaurant is situated at the complete west end of Old-Montreal touristy sector & located on the ground floor of what seem to be an office building (i.e: the restaurant restrooms are located past the main'mid-90's pinky-beige-stone-washed' entrance hall of the said office building).
The decor (of the restaurant + main building hall for restrooms) is somewhat dated to the mid-90's'trying-for-high-end-customers' restaurant (i.e.: somewhat'boomer-cheesy' in my opinion). I don't think that's what the restaurant is going for ultimately; the staff is young & dressed'chilled'. As said before, the service was good.
Unfortunately, the menu & the decor is giving -'I'm a 55ish+ male tourist from the United-State-of-America travelling outside my country for the 1st time & wanting to impress my date / cheat-mate with an IMPRESSION of an'elegant-diner-hotel-favor' combo; I am scared of food experiences & therefore I want a menu that I can relate too'- vibe. (ie: burger / pork-ribs / steak / pasta...)
I was a bit disappointed myself on the menu choices, since I wanted the'palourdes' as shown on the web-menu; that choice was not available at the restaurant on Sunday...I should have called - that's my bad.
For context, I did reserve my table for 5:30PM on a Sunday since my guest & I were expected somewhere else at 19:00...
However, that doesn't change my opinion on the overall'vibe' of the restaurant.
I recommend for the food...the rest of what you are going for is up to you!!!
The female hostess was very accomplished & super nice. The male host with the patchy moustache & greasy hair was terrible & his energy was awful, ruined the experience completely from just one interaction. The steak is good, the burger is dry & uninspired, you'd get a better one next door at five guys. I wouldn't go there for a celebration. Overall okay definitely not a must try if you like American style bistros with a fancy twist id just go to Deville, better food, service & vibes. Overall 3.5 stars.

A fantastic culinary experience in a beautiful setting. Expertly crafted cocktails & an incredible staff elevate the vibe. Special thanks to Felix for making it unforgettable!
We had high expectations for Romies considering how much we love its team's other restaurant, Arthurs, but unfortunately they were not met on this evening.
On the positive side, the food was phenomenal (especially the burger, pasta, & blackout cake), & they have cultivated a really cool vibe through the design, open kitchen, bar, etc.
That said, what really let us down was the service. From the hop, our server was rude, dismissive, & barely checked in. Then, he brought the wrong bottle of wine to our table, which we politely corrected, & then he proceeded to place that $100 bottle on my friend's bill (perhaps hoping she would not notice?). Also, we were there for my birthday & to kick off the night's celebrations (which was noted on the reservation), & there was absolutely no acknowledgement - not even placing a candle in the slice of cake I ordered. Don't get me wrong, we were not expecting to be catered to by any means, but being a bit more welcoming overall would have gone a long way.
