Last night I took an edible & I had a verrrry specific craving for a nostalgic Canadian-Chinese meal (the ones my family would have only a handful of times a year growing up). The particular criteria for the meal was as follows:
1 - no-frills decor & plastic single-use tablecloths
2 - MSG-filled, glossy coated everything (chicken balls surrounded by a cm of dough, Cantonese chow mein that was crispy & soft at the same time, crunchy umami eggrolls with a sweet plum sauce)
3 - lazy Susans on massive tables for the vibe
4 - fairly empty/not busy, but a good mix of local groups/families & Chinese folks dining in the establishment

& they executed perfectly on every level. No notes.

The reason this place isn't rated higher is because people aren't going in with the right expectations. This isn't a typical Chinese meal, this is the Canadian-Chinese's take. & they do it so well at VIP.

On top of this, the service was awesome, the oranges at the end of the meal was a nice touch, & all in all, it was quite a good price for the insane portion of food they gave us. I'll be eating general Tao beef for the next four days.

Can't wait to come back!

I ordered general tsos chicken to go & they gave no white rice!? How does a $20 order not come with rice?? & it's all dark chicken meat. Sauce was good but not having any rice soured the meal. Very disappointed with the money spent here.

The wonton soup was good, but the "chicken" in the fried rice & noodles tasted weird.

Best Chinese food restaurant in Montreal for Beef & Chinese broccoli; Cantonaise chow mein; Chicken fried rice; Sweet & sour pork; & Lemon chicken! Since coming from Vancouver I have been searching for a good, tasty restaurant & I'm so grateful I found this one. As soon as I walked in the door on New Years Eve at 7pm, I was warmly greeted. Without a reservation, I was still seated promptly & served water & tea instantly. The servers were kind, friendly, & super efficient. The food came out within a decent timeframe considering how busy it was. It was all truly delicious. We ate enough to be full at the dinner table & we both had enough to take-out for full meals later on. I also appreciated the freshly cut oranges at the end of meal. A sweet way to end a great time here.

Excellent place to eat Chinese food. The service was very fast & very nice always smiling. The food was really good. We ordered Beef Chop suey, General Tao Chicken, beef sizzling, beef chow mein & (1) big portion of steam rice that is enough for 6 or even 7 people. Prices are very good & portions are big. Totally recommended. Prices between $15 to $ 22 per dish.

We had the following: egg rolls, wonton soup, mushroom egg drop soup, Hunan dumplings, Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce, bbq pork fried rice, chicken chow mein, diced chicken with Cashew Nuts & vegetables, & Mongolian beef (beef sauté). We ordered through Uber eats, so the price per item was pretty high, but comparable to other restaurants. Most of the food was good. Here are how I rate the items from best to worst. Chicken chow mein: Very Delicious. I was surprised at how crispy & crunchy the noodles on top still were by the time we got to eat. The chicken & vegetables were also in a delicious sauce. It was a pretty good portion & there was nothing about this we didn't like. I'd definitely order it again. Mongolian beef/beef sauté: Really good! If you are expecting anything like P.f. Chang's Mongolian beef, don't be surprised that it's nothing like that. It has other vegetables like red pepper, onion & snow peas. It is very spicy (for us) & the beef is very tender. We both liked it although I still prefer Mongolian beef from PF Chang's. I'd definitely order this again. Chicken with Cashew Nuts: This one was really good, except I was not a fan of the type of mushroom they used. The slice was really thick & chewy & I didn't like the taste. Besides that, there was a good assortment of vegetables & the chicken & sauce were also delicious. I personally also dislike baby corn which is also in the dish, but I know a lot of folks like it. If probably order it again & just pick it the mushrooms & baby corn. We both liked this. Egg rolls: These were just ok. They were a bit small, but well cooked. I love the egg roll wrappers, but the seasoning inside wasn't very good. I would probably will order it again because I love egg rolls. Maybe it would be better cold the next day. BBQ pork fried rice: I like that they offer the option of BBQ pork because not every place does. I like that they put so many vegetables in it, but overall the taste of the rice is just ok. Maybe the next day cold it would be better. I may or may not order this again if it tastes better the next day. Chinese broccoli in oyster sauce: I love Chinese broccoli & I sometimes prepare it at home or eat it at restaurants. The way they prepared it, it was too bitter. I would probably not order this again as it doesn't seem worth the cost to me. They sauce was good, but I'd probably order a different vegetable. Wok cafe does it better. We'll still eat it though, it's not that bad. Mushroom egg drop soup: This was just ok. It was very bland. Most egg drop soup is pretty mild, but because they used frozen peas & carrots, that taste really overwhelmed the soup. I think it would have been better maybe with just mushrooms, egg & green onions. Hunan dumplings: I normally love hunan dumplings. Every place has their own unique peanut sauce. Some are sweet, some are spicy, some are coconutty. I've never had hunan dumplings like this. I really disliked them to the point that I will not eat the rest. They didn't taste peanutty at all. The dominant flavor was soy sauce & some spice/flavor I didn't recognize. I also didn't really like the meat inside, although I couldn't taste it well because of the sauce. My husband did like them a lot though & said he'll eat them all, so I guess it's a matter of different tastes. They give a decent portion. My husband ordered the wonton soup, but he hasn't tried it yet, so I can't fairly review it. It did look good though & they didn't seem stingy with the wontons. Overall I rate them 4 out of 5 stars & I'd order there again. My husband thinks they're 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Went there for a full dinner once & it was good. I also stopped by the other day to pick up egg rolls & chicken fried rice & although it was good but I had 4 small spring rolls with a bowl of chicken fried rice & it cost me 25$ I find that expensive considering there was not much food. The portions are good but the spring rolls were small....tasty but small. I initially asked for egg rolls but I got spring rolls & also I asked for no vegetables in the chicken fried rice & I found it much better since they put a lot of peas. This place is bright neon lights dining room style with plastic covering the table cloths. The staff is ok but sometimes the service is a bit long. Overall I would recommend this place but it is not cheap. The rice was really good. This place is on Clark right below René Lévesque Boulevard in Chinatown. So if you're heading east on René Lévesque you turn right on Clark & you will see the VIP restaurant on your left. Like I said, of you go eat there you will eat in a very basic square table nothing fancy with plastic protecting the table cloths & a no rush service with good food. So go try it now. Get up & stop procrastinating & just go eat there, you will be glad you did Than you,

January, 2024: Restaurant VIP is a good & decent Restaurant. I love the food that I ate there we were three guys & we came here on a Sunday Pros: 1) Washroom is pretty clean. 2) The food is good i ordered Steamed Rice & Like a fried chicken thing but it was good. My friends ordered Pineapple chicken & General Tao. 3) The waiters were good & working hard. 4) Many of the customers there knew each other. 5) Right by Chinatown & not a far walk from the Metro. Cons: 1) There was no Water when were served. Just the Hot tea. 2) The waiter was okay some were nice & others were not. 3) Parking maybe a challenge. 4) The Restaurant looked small when it's full & a bit rundowned but still nice vibe. 5) The food was a little bit salty but I think they should be more upfront about how to pay & what to eat. Conclusion: It was a good restaurant & I hope to try other things in the future & try the sharing idea mentioned like 18.95 for one person or 25 for sharing etc.
