Great service & presentation, but the atmosphere felt boring - like a cafeteria with no real design or decor. The food was also very bland.

We were looking for authentic Korean food & were supposed to go to Dawa, but they were closed. Dawa has the best Korean chicken resto in my opinion, not just because of the chicken but also the amazing side dishes & overall experience.

So we tried Mukja for the first time, & unfortunately it will also be the last. It feels like they adopted an Americanized version of Korean food that is flavorless & soulless. It was a very disappointing experience & honestly felt like the complete opposite of the resto next door.

Mukja has decent menu options, but the food is really bad if you're looking for authentic Korean flavors. I've been to many Korean restos in Montreal like Sam Cha, Matjip, Jako, & even Mon Ami, & they range from good to great. Mukja is by far the worst Korean resto experience I've had. We didn't even finish half of our food & still paid around $50.

I'm sorry for the bad review, but I genuinely don't recommend this place unless they make dramatic changes to their food.

Edit:
Recently went back & I have to say every suggestion mentioned below has been done & then some. It was a much different / better experience & I was pleasantly surprised.

Is this the downfall of Mukja???

I've visited this restaurant several times & have always enjoyed it, but our most recent visit was an absolute disaster. The service was amateur, unprofessional, & completely chaotic, easily the worst we've ever experienced anywhere-& it was painful to watch.

It took almost 20 minutes before we had to chase someone down to take our order, & people who arrived after us were served first. We had to flag down a waiter just to place an order, as if we were begging for attention.

We ordered a full meal with soup, banchans, main dish, & dessert. After 30 more agonizing minutes, we had to specifically ask for our soup because no one even planned to serve it.

Throughout the meal, we had to constantly chase our waiter for everything-water, condiments, clearing dishes. Staff walked past tables piled with empty plates as if they didn't exist. It was humiliating.

When dessert finally arrived, it was dropped on top of our dirty dishes because no one had cleared the table (even though when we were asked if we were ready for dessert the waiter walked away with empty hands leaving the dishes there & bringing the dessert instead....so weird)

Orders are scribbled on blue sticky notes in total chaos, with zero system, zero coordination, & zero professionalism.

Even with a full house, they were still taking delivery orders, leaving staff running around like chickens with their heads cut off, accomplishing nothing. They also looked extremely frazzled & miserable - arguably so.

Everyone at this restaurant waiting 45-60 minutes for their food. Everyone kept looking at each other confused at the chaotic setting. Every table seemed frustrated-some nearly left, others were waving their hands like schoolchildren begging for attention. It was beyond embarrassing; it was a masterclass in bad service.

There was no structure, no professionalism, & no basic customer care. Not once did a server check if we were okay or needed anything-they were in constant motion but achieving nothing.

Suggestions for improvement:

Service: Implement a real system. Assign one person to takeout, two people for tables. Take orders immediately, serve soups & banchans first, clear dishes without being asked, & check on guests proactively. This is basic restaurant management, not optional.

Décor: Comfortable seating, softer lighting, & some wall decorations would go a long way. The current bare, harsh environment only makes the chaos feel worse.

The food may still be good, but no one will remember the food with service this atrocious. As it stands, this place is headed for disaster if changes aren't made immediately. I love this restaurant & plan to return in a month to see if anything improves-hopefully this review can turn into a positive one. But right now, this experience was painful, humiliating, & completely unacceptable.

Kalbitang was so good which made me think about those old days I lived in Korea.
Jampong was terible, blank, seafoods were not fresh at all.
Fried chicken was soo good . I loved banchans more 🤤
Waters was not so friendly, never smiled when brought out foods to my table.

💥💥💥
We tried this Korean restaurant, but the experience was rather disappointing. Overall, the dishes lacked flavor. The chicken was very greasy & bland, which completely masked any taste. The soup was also lacking in spices. The fried chicken, despite being presented as a chef's specialty, was dry & uninteresting in terms of flavor. The only dish that stood out was the tteokbokki.

ISSUE RESOLVED

WE DEVOURED THE TANGSUYUK

We ordered Tangusuyuk, Chicken Gizzard, Galbitang, & Tteokbokki super delicious & very crispy

23/10/2025
We've been regulars at Mukja since 2023, & we always come back for the tangsuyuk-it's usually crispy, double-fried, & absolutely delicious. But today (Oct 23rd), the tangsuyuk was disappointingly soggy & clearly not double-fried like usual. We politely asked the waiter to check with the chef, but the manager refused to accommodate the request.
The waiter was great as always-friendly & attentive-& the rest of the food was good. But the tangsuyuk is the main reason we come here, & this experience was a letdown.
We'll only return if the manager addresses this issue. If that happens, I'll gladly update this review back to 5 stars.

We've been craving for korean food & looking for an authentic one. Feel like this place made really great korean food. First thing first, the best fried chicken that i've tried in this city (so far) i mean the sauce tastes flavorful. We ordered tteok-bokki woth cheeses.. amazing. The texture is so great..soft & chewy, eating with the sauce.. yummm The cold noodles is really refreshing..the wheat noodles is so chewy. Good price. Parking available on the side if the street Will definitely come back to try more.

The portion is very generous for our price! I was extremely full after my meal & half the appetizer! I strongly recommend the fried chicken gizzard, so crunchy & flavorful! Mukja definitely became one of my favorite Korean restaurants in Montreal!

most things are pretty good & fresh, service is great, but their soup broths need more depth of flavour (I find them a bit watery) & everything needs to be spicier, the soups are always way less spicy & salty than at other places. last time, my mom got a chicken bibimbap & said the chicken was really chewy & flavorless & the sauce tasted like nothing :(

Update 14-Sep-2024 Everything was delicious as per usual. We tried different dishes this time which were the kkanpoongi (sweet & sour fried chicken) & the jaenbang naengmyeon (cold noodle with wasabi-based sauce). The kkanpoongi was so tasty, crispy & the chicken was juicy! The cold noodle dish was so refreshing & I liked the wasabi sauce. It was big enough to feed at minimum 2 people. Will be coming back & ordering these two dishes along with the tangsuyuk & hot stone bibimbap. _____ Update 06-Jul-2024: Service was amazing! Our waiter was so kind & food came out quick. Size large tangsuyuk is HUGE! Bibim naengmyun, tangsuyuk & dolsot bibimbap were my faves. ------- Found this resto through TikTok & saw that they had just recently renovated from more of a counter spot to a dine in resto. The food was sooooo delicious. We got the special of the week which included a jajangmyeon & tangsuyuk for 19.99!!!! Definitely a bang for your buck. We also ordered the webfoot octopus which was perfectly balanced & not too spicy. Everything tasted amazing, the portions were generous & the value for the food here is unmatched. Will definitely be back!!
