We ordered the bone marrow & it was really generous just like what I saw from other reviews. I have the duck for main dish. They smelled so good when they came & some of our parties ordered the flank steak & they said it was very very good. We pretty much cleaned up all the food. For desserts we have the Paris Brest & crepe sucette. Although the crêpes are served in a Parisienne style that they made a flame with the Grand Marnier, I still enjoyed so much more of the Paris Brest in hazelnut cream, not too sweet & it's just right.
A good traditional cafe. I went for Sunday lunch started with the canapes & then the steak frites. The canapes were the highlight, particular the mousse, it was great. No complaints with the steak but it did not blow me away, same for the fries.
My experience was amazing because of service (first & foremost shout out to Jean-Michel), food, & atmosphere.
During our visit, we started with ordering what we thought were good plates (they absolutely were) but it turned into a Michelin star experience when Jean -Michel took the reigns & ordered his recommended plates & side dishes.
Listen. Everything here is amazing. There's a reason you found this restaurant in a list somewhere of best in Montreal so the last one here doesn't mean it's bad but in order of our favorite dishes, we had:
• Brussel Sprouts - this is a side dish but it's got main course energy. I would undoubtedly order this by itself for take out. Place Carmin could open a side restaurant that ONLY makes this dish & it would be wildly successful. Yes, I'm hyping this up. No, I don't take it back.
• Bone Marrow - this is as good as the picture shows. I was surprised with the escargot & mushroom but the flavor was strong. Sharing is the way to go. It's very flavor forward so if you are this by yourself, it may get overwhelming but this dish also stands out.
• Soup of the Day - this dish, as the name suggests, changes but we had a cauliflower cream. It felt like such a home dish cooked by grandma. It took me back to my childhood in Montreal (I'm not from here - that's how good it is).
• Boston Lettuce - I am from Boston so you know I had to order this. The yogurt is everything. The croutons & texture all works in tandem. Take a picture (we failed to do so) but then mix it all & enjoy this.
• Arctic char à la Grenobloise - this is a big fish. Definitely for two. Yes, we order another main along with this & I regret nothing. I've never had such a large piece of dish cooked to perfection throughout. It's garnished with what felt something pickled & it complemented the charred earthy skin of the fish.
• Crêpe Suzette - this dish starts hot out of the kitchen as the video shows. It's delicate, not overwhelmingly sweet, & just what we needed after ordering 3/4 of the menu
• Surf & Turf - this also changes on the daily (I may be wrong). During our visit I believe it was a hangar steak with shrimp & scallops. It came with a sauce. Meat was perfectly cooked, juicy, & tender. Towards the end, the sauce was strong that gave it a saltier than preferred taste but still had no issues.
• Gnocchi - I've never had gnocchi the way served here & I absolutely would order it again. It comes over home made sauces that have a yogurt flavor. Great crunch outside & fluffy inside.
• Salmon Tartare - the salmon was mixed in with cucumber & came accompanied with lettuce, crackers, & French creme that helped balance the dish. It was a great start of the culinary journey
• French Fries - these came with surf & turf. Done well, but it's just French Fries
I want to end with a huge thank you to Place Carmin, it's kitchen for their amazing work, & front-of-house staff that made it unforgettable, particularly Jean-Michel. I will visit every time I'm in Montreal
got the steak, orange duck & gnocchi. it was pretty good. the desserts were also nice.
Food was delicious. Tried the flank steak & Leek Puff Pastry as well as the Crepe Suzette. Honestly was really pleased with every dish. Simple but flavourful. Would say the crepe suzette is too small of a portion, only one crepe comes with the dish.
Beautiful restaurant with an amazing menu. One of many meals my fiancée & I had while roadtripping through Canada & the best dish during the trip was the canard a l'orange here! That being said, everything was delicious from the canapés to the oysters to the escargot on bone marrow to the veal steak & shrimp surf n turf. Our server was excellent & the bar even made me a delicious freshly brewed lemon iced tea as I don't drink. Also dessert was heavenly.
This is one of my favourite places to recommend to people looking for fine French fare near the Old Port or Ville Marie areas of Montreal. The ambiance is lovely & the service is bar none but the starters are where the truly stand out. I highly recommend the sweetbreads with the gorgeous puff pastry topper & the blood pudding tatin is, for me, an absolute must. For the mains, my only suggestion is to avoid the hanger steak if you prefer yours rare/blue as they are pre-cooked sous-vide to a specific temp, then finished on the grill, which makes any cook under medium rare impossible. Otherwise, anything on the menu is sure to please. Be sure to add a side of their delicious mushrooms in persillade. Bon appetit!
A beautiful spot for a business dinner, the quality & variety of dishes were extremely high. I went through plate after plate of the octopus salad as my compatriots did not adequately appreciate it - more for me! The steak was also cooked to perfection, & I loved the whimsical canapés which kicked off the meal. Quite generous with the house wine as well, I would love to come back anytime.
Service was great! Steak was very fatty. & overall the food was overly salty. Goat cheese tart was a highlight.
We had a reservation at Bouillon Bilk(the great great french restaurent in Montreal) but in the morning they texted us that it went on fire unfortunately, & they offered 3 other similar restaurants that we could call & reserve in stead. We chose Place Carmin: A Nice terrace with cozy table & nice staff. But the meal wasn't exactly what i ordered. I ordered surf & turf , the waitress said it comes with lobster (in stead of shrimps), which it didn't. But that's not all. The suf part(which normally includes (3)grilled shrimps turned out to be teeny tiny tasteless cooked shrimps on a toast with some sauce. They were the size of small macaronis. It was a disappointment. The steak was a 6(out of 10), i couldn't feel the taste of it, cause it was submerged in a green sauce (it was like a plate of soup with a steak in it). But to be fair, the rose wine that the waitress suggested, was very good & matched the meals. & the dessert was ok. However I don't think am gonna go there again though.
Beautiful & stylist place for meat lovers, amazing steaks with different choices of sides dishes & choice of sauce to go with the steak. My favorite are the shrimp cocktails, a steak served with asparagus, bearnaise or pepercorn sauce crispy french fries
This was a fantastic meal, thoroughly enjoyed the steak tartare, duck a lorange, & the mandarin/mint dessert is fabulous! Bravo!
