In fall 2007, the chefs of Joe Beef restaurant opened a new restaurant, the Liverpool House, located next to the Atwater market and numerous antiquarians of Notre-Dame St. With a menu that changes every week, the Liverpool House offers seasonal dishes inspired by ingredients found in the market.
Overall, reviews portray Liverpool House as a refined yet welcoming spot with a warm, intimate atmosphere and a strong focus on bold flavors and careful technique. Diners repeatedly praise standout dishes such as beef tartare, steak frites, lobster pasta, and arctic char, along with reliable starters and desserts that elevate the meal. The beverage program is frequently highlighted, especially the wine and local beer options, which pair well with the menu. Service is described as attentive and knowledgeable on many visits, though several experiences note inconsistencies and occasional delays during busy periods. The setting is often lively but comfortable, with a terrace option and a vibe that can feel bustling or romantic depending on the night. Reservations are commonly advised, as tables fill up and some guests report longer waits or portions that fail to meet expectations for the price. If the kitchen or service falls short, pricing can feel steep, while many guests feel the quality justifies the cost on other nights. Although experiences vary, Liverpool House remains a top Montreal destination for a memorable, sophisticated dining experience.
Food (except the lobster & pasta dish which was very low on the lobster part) & service are very good here - we've been multiple time over the past 4 or 5 year. I have always had a reservation BUT very disappointed that they have NEVER fulfilled my request to sit out back. May not be returning for a while. Lots of other great options in the area.

This place epitomized casual fine dining. Enjoyed it more than a certain celebrity chef's bistro in Vieux Montreal. Service recommendations made our evening.
Amazing food. Definitely not the place to go if you're on a diet, because you'll want to eat it all. Service is very friendly & helpful. Operation is very efficient. Just lived the whole experience.
Really good fancy-ish restaurant with some incredible food!
For appetizers, we got the oysters & we were really impressed with the plating, taste, & especially the horseradish garnish. But that didn't even compare to how good the beef tartare was which we cleared real quick. It had a kind of French onion dip with either roasted potato squares or croutons (we couldn't figure out which). I really hope I can try to replicate that or get it somewhere back home!
Then for the main course, my cousin got the lobster spaghetti, which was a lot of food so she shared some with us & it was really great! I got the roasted duck & peach which had a really good demi-glace sauce. The duck was very tender & meaty which paired well with the sweetness of the roasted peach.

There were hits (beef tartare & fries) & misses (chicken, clam, & succotash), although we appreciate the fries being comped when the server realized the kitchen missed preparing them.
I took some leftover chicken home & realized the inside was still pink. I wasn't paying much attention during the meal & started from the other end, so hopefully didn't ingest much.
Based on this, the restaurant felt overhyped & we had far better experiences with other restaurants at a similar price point.
One of the best beef tartares I've ever had! Everything was delicious, to be honest, but the tartare was a standout. Service was perfunctory, but adequate. Overall a very enjoyable experience!
Absolutely epic food, amazing selection of French-influence Canadian dishes. I went there as part of a large, work-related, post-event party where we all ate family style. Great service, the waiters really know their stuff, & the food was exceptional. It's definitely on the pricier side, but worth it if you're looking for a superior Foodie experience. Everything was excellent. Did not have to wait since we had a large reservation for 20+ people.
I used to be the biggest fan of this place. My husband & I have been coming every year to celebrate our anniversary before wedding & post-wedding. We have raved about & recommended this restaurant to anyone looking for a nice place. The service used to be surprisingly casual for an expensive spot & unpretentious. The food was always incredibly inventive, well portioned & well flavoured. The daily menu used to have a wide array of interesting dishes that were a healthy mix between seafood & game meat.
Now? We recently went & were just shocked. The atmosphere is so different - the decor has shifted, the patrons are mostly all English tourists, the service has become incredibly pretentious & poor: when our server realized we weren't ordering wine, we hardly saw him as he fawned over other tables. The food, while still delicious, has lost all of its nice touches - the fries that come with the steak frites used to come seasoned with tallow & Parmesan, & are now just plain, the tartare used to be accompanied by (laughably) one piece of crisped bread & now comes entirely solo. Even the bread & pickle side has been downsized & includes (quite literally) half a pickle. We were incredibly disappointed this July & will certainly not be going back. There are many other restaurants in the city at a similar price point that are doing more for your money & not making you feel like you don't belong to eat there. It's a shame as for a lot of people, expensive restaurants are for special occasions where people make a conscious decision to allocate their disposable income to celebrate something special. These are not normal evenings for normal folks. & it's reasonable to expect a certain level of service (& by that I mean not being grossly neglected by your server & watching him be omnipresent to many other tables in your sections, or at least having him come by at least once before you finish two courses). Even after emailing the restaurant, it took them several days to respond with a chat gpt response asking about the name on the reservation. They thanked us for'giving them the chance to make it right' & then never heard anything back.
I used to be the biggest fan of this place but truly, spend your money elsewhere.
Pictured: the same dish year over year (steak frites).
Les huîtres, d'une grande fraîcheur, ont agréablement lancé le repas. Les ribs fumées étaient vraiment délicieuses. En revanche, le magret de canard manquait un peu de caractère. Une expérience globalement satisfaisante
Best restaurant in Montreal hands down. If it's your first time, try the steak & fries as well as the lobster spaghetti. Oysters are fresh & huge + you get to be served by the best CECILE!!! Thank you for your amazing service!!! 🫶🏽
