Great menu, nice presentation. The atmosphere was nice too, classic Montreal shotgun style eatery. The service fell short for us though. I think there was a shift change shortly after we arrived which caused a bit of a rough dining experience. We had to ask for water multiple times. There were long waits between courses, our drinks were taken as soon as we finished them but we were never able to order a second round, we were brought dessert menus twice. we could tell no one was really dedicated to our table. Our original server left shortly after taking our order without informing us, after that it seemed that we were split between two new servers that had just arrived. Kind of a let down given the reputation & price paid.
Sat at the bar & the evening unfolded like a dream. Great service, wine pairings with my bone marrow, & again with the liver was sublime. & cheese- my goodness it was a real treat.
Great service! Duck is good. It's better to make reservation before eating.
We had high expectations given how highly praised this restaurant is across the internet. Still, the incredible goat cheese appetizer exceeded our expectations. The creamy goat cheese & crunchy crust pieces perfectly balanced out the sweetness of the caramelized onions. I enjoyed the chicken paillard, but it didn't balance flavors as well as the appetizer. Our waiter took a while to take our order & give us the check but the restaurant was very busy so thats fine.
Chaleureux restaurant français servant des savoureux repas avec un service hors pair. Réservation de mise, je recommande fortement.
Reminds me of my favorite bistro in Paris - Chez Georges - but the food may be better & more imaginative ! We had a wonderful quail meal with a special Japanese cole slaw !
The food here is good...not great, good. Best things were the appetizers of Japanese coleslaw & beet salad. Steak frites was forgettable sadly. The service & ambiance was nice & we were well taken care of.
Great traditional French cuisine. I have been going there for the last 30 years & the quality & service are unwaveringly excellent.
I got the beef tartare & the steak with shallot butter & fries. The beef tartare was okay, not unique or better than anything I've had before. The steak quality was not the best, but the fries were light & crispy & the shallot butter was herby & savoury - so good. The restaurant vibe is like old diner style, which I thought was cute but I didn't love it. Service was great, no complaints.
Delicious food, reasonable prices & fun atmosphere. My steak tasted great & was cooked perfectly. The octopus was very tender & paired nicely with the red pepper sauce. Service was quick however sometimes too quick that it became less efficient: our appetizers arrived but we didn't have any plates or utensils then our dirty utensils were taken away but was not replaced for our mains. They were clearly understaffed & were running around all night. My partner & I enjoyed our night regardless & would still come back to try other dishes. Waiter also made an excellent wine recommendation that easily became one of my favourites!
Hidden gem! The ambiance was friendly, the service impeccable, & every dish a burst of authentic flavors. A culinary journey that left a lasting impression. Highly recommended!
This was the BEST duck confit I've ever had! It was so perfectly done. The place is quite packed & even when I made a reservation a few weeks before we could only get bar seating so make sure to book well in advance. If I'm in Montreal again I'm definitely going back. Pretty reasonable prices too!
My husband & I visited Montreal for the first time & we were impressed with the fabulous restaurant scene here. We didn't get to go to a lot of restaurants here but L'Express quickly became one of our top choices-so much so that we visited twice in a row, both for dinner. First visit was for a late night meal right after our check-in. We had sorrel soup, duck confit & a lemon pie. We loved the soup & it was also our best duck confit. The mushrooms & potatoes had depths of flavors having been cooked in (what I assume to be) duck fat. For the second day, we shared french onion soup, hubby had salmon with lentils & spinach & I got quails with wild rice & we were both amazed once again. The French onion soup instantly warmed us up & the main dishes were very well balanced in terms of seasoning & also cooked to perfection. We also enjoyed quick service & friendly & very professional staff.
People rightly love this place for the authentic & relaxed French bistro atmosphere & energy. The food is ok, wait staff excellent, & very good value for money. Highly recommend.
the best French food in Montreal, don't waste your time or money anywhere else
The duck is really good especially with the sweet potato & sauce underneath the duck. Surprising combination. The dessert is the must try!!! If you are a sweet tooth you should order this dessert
