Food: outstanding Service: great Ambiance, great Drink list can be overwhelming but asking servers for recommendation didn't disappoint me. Classic French.
Delicious authentic French fare in its iconic locale on St-Denis, perfect for a date night. Make sure to reserve because they get booked solid! Love the giant jar of pickles that you get with your bread & butter at the beginning of the meal. The fries were crispy & served with mustard-mayo. The steak was cooked perfectly, with a generous pat of herby butter. The beef tartare was chopped a bit finer than I am used to, but so flavourful. Definitely recommend this dish! The île flottante was splendid to look at but a bit too sweet for my taste but still something worth ordering!
I came here on a Monday night for dinner. I had a reservation & it was quite busy. The host runs a very tight & organized ship. The amount of people who walked in without reservations & the number of phone calls was endless. Make sure to make a reservation, many people without were told to come back 45 minutes-1 hour later. I sat at the bar. The stools are nice but do not move so you're sitting pretty close to your fellow diners. For my meal I had a white wine, Sanserre to drink. I ordered the Bone Marrow, Croque Monsieur & maple syrup Profiteroles. Marrow was good, Croque was comforting & fries crunchy. I think the Profiteroles were my favourite item. The bar staff were both kind, friendly, attentive (but not overly) & had recommendations when asked. As expected they were also all able to speak French & English. The establishment is very tight space wise & your very close to other diners. Additionally, I know they were busy but before I even took my last bite of my dessert, my bill was quickly slapped in front of me. So I guess that was the Express part of my experience. 🤷🏻♀️
Basically like a French brasserie. Food is great & just a little pricy. Service is a little slow but it's no big deal (not for people in a hurry). Definitely one of the best higher end restaurants in Montreal.
Always outstanding, a safe choice when you feel like eating french cuisine later in the evening.
There are certainly may be better places for French cuisine in Montreal but no where comes close to the whole package that the Express offers. From the food, to the ambience & exceptional service by staff who have been there many years, the Express dining experience is truly unique in the country & perhaps on this continent. If you do go, remember to order a Baba au Rhum !!
Great traditional French cuisine. I have been going there for the last 30 years & the quality & service are unwaveringly excellent.
My husband & I visited Montreal for the first time & we were impressed with the fabulous restaurant scene here. We didn't get to go to a lot of restaurants here but L'Express quickly became one of our top choices-so much so that we visited twice in a row, both for dinner. First visit was for a late night meal right after our check-in. We had sorrel soup, duck confit & a lemon pie. We loved the soup & it was also our best duck confit. The mushrooms & potatoes had depths of flavors having been cooked in (what I assume to be) duck fat. For the second day, we shared french onion soup, hubby had salmon with lentils & spinach & I got quails with wild rice & we were both amazed once again. The French onion soup instantly warmed us up & the main dishes were very well balanced in terms of seasoning & also cooked to perfection. We also enjoyed quick service & friendly & very professional staff.
People rightly love this place for the authentic & relaxed French bistro atmosphere & energy. The food is ok, wait staff excellent, & very good value for money. Highly recommend.
the best French food in Montreal, don't waste your time or money anywhere else
First impression….. there is no sign out front. I guess you have to be in the know.
Beautiful inside like a proper French Bistro. Menu with all the classics.
Everything delicious.
The waiter was snooty.
Probably French ;- )
A staple in the neighborhood & the city, a solid choice when I’m craving for a delicious classic French bistro food.
Wonderful French cuisine that's always busy. Food is delicious & service is good.
Best French bistro around. Great selection of traditional French bistro fare. Great wine selection. Impeccable service. Highly recommended.
Upd-20231005: Been back a couple times post-pandemic, food quality has been consistent, but like most places, they're being challenged staff-wise, but overall a great place to enjoy an excellent meal.
The consummate go to French bistro in Montreal. Awesome food, service, & atmosphere.?
This is a very famous French restaurant in montreal. Strongly recommend to stop by!
No sign was seen, so you may need to look at the map carefully to find this place. The menu was written with a script that I was not able to read well, so I chose my menu from Google review pictures.
It is a busy place, I didn't expect to be very kind service. But they served better than I expected ^^
I couldn't make a reservation for our party, which was 3. (Recommed to make a reservation 1 or 2 weeks before you go for the dinner)Then I just walked in at their opening time. It worked. We could have seated at the bar.
The dress code was not mandatory. That worked for tourists.
I live in New York. None of the places can really beat the prices. For me, the food prices were very gernerous compared to its popularity.
Réservée une soirée délicieux!
Le crème fraîche au kataifi was rich, & balanced perfectly with the grilled onions
Le pieuvre was the best dish of the ones we ordered. It was soft & the piperade complemented it perfectly
Le canaird confit first looked beautiful & despite it's greasy appearance was super light, soft, & perfectly seasoned. The leeks accompanying it made it an absolutely perfect main.
& I cannot forget the pickles presented with the bread after we sat down. The pickles were the best seasoned ones I have had with such dimension in flavor
Highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Montréal for the first time
The staff was friendly & very patient with my stale French speaking XD
After being away from Canada for 2 years, it felt great to visit this French bistro again. Not much has changed. The classics are still there. The soupe de poissons tasted amazing. L’os à moelle just has I remembered. Living in India you can image that I’m craving beef a lot. So the tartare was just the fix I needed. Could have used a little kick for a guy who’s been eating spicy Indian food for a while but the server never asked how I wanted it. The fries were great & crispy. The croque-monsieur left us wandering. Very hard & dry. Frankly have something else. Over all it felt good to be back. The atmosphere was vibrant even on this late afternoon during the week.
