Gibby's serves as a destination for prime cuts of beef and fresh seafood within a historic stone building defined by wood-burning fireplaces and dark wood accents. The menu focuses on dry-aged steaks that are trimmed on-site, alongside Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, and oysters harvested from cold waters. Traditional sides such as baked potatoes, pickles, and sourdough bread accompany the primary meat and fish courses. Patrons encounter a multi-room layout that maintains an atmosphere of seclusion and warmth through its thick stone walls and low ceilings. The culinary preparation emphasizes classic grilling techniques over open flames to achieve specific textures and flavor profiles. Every selection of seafood undergoes rigorous sourcing standards to ensure consistency across the entire menu. This establishment functions as a dedicated center for meat and aquatic offerings in a centralized urban environment.
Gibby's is widely celebrated as a quintessential Montreal steakhouse, cherished for its historic atmosphere, elegant decor, and traditional charm housed within a beautifully preserved centuries-old building. Many patrons praise the restaurant for its exceptional service, noting that staff often go above and beyond to create memorable experiences for birthdays and anniversaries. The menu is frequently lauded for its generous portions, high-quality steaks, signature Beef Wellington, and unique touches like fresh bread, pickles, and palate-cleansing sorbet. While some guests have noted inconsistencies in food preparation or service quality during busier times, the overall consensus among regular visitors and first-time guests alike highlights the establishment as a reliable and iconic destination for a classic fine dining experience in Old Montreal.
Amazing steakhouse in Old Montreal. Our waitress was very attentive & gave great recommendations. The oysters were some of the best i've ever had & the portions are very generous.
From the moment you step through the doors, you're completely immersed in Montreal's rich history & culture. The centuries-old stone walls, low ceilings, & authentic architecture create an incredibly warm, intimate atmosphere that feels like stepping back into the 18th century.
The service was nothing short of exceptional-attentive, genuine, & flawless from start to finish. Every member of the staff made us feel welcomed & ensured every detail of our dining experience was perfect.
As for the food, it was simply outstanding. Every dish was expertly prepared, beautifully presented, & bursting with flavor. The steak was cooked to absolute perfection & ranks among the very best I've ever had.
If you're visiting Old Montreal, this restaurant is an absolute must. In my opinion, it's the finest steakhouse in the city, offering the perfect combination of world-class cuisine, impeccable service, & an unforgettable historic atmosphere. I can't recommend it highly enough & will definitely be returning.

Finding a steakhouse that serves world-class steaks is one thing; finding one that can seamlessly handle a bachelor party of 14 guys without missing a beat is a rare miracle. From the moment we walked in, the staff treated us like royalty. Usually, a group of our size gets shoved into a cramped corner or stuck with agonizingly slow service, but the hospitality here was incredibly sharp, fast, & accommodating.
The pictures of the food don't do it justice. We got a seafood tower (forgot to take that picture), delicious salad, & naturally a steak cooked to perfection. To accompany the food, the cocktails were superb. The old fashions & espresso martinis kept coming. Just make sure you leave room for their cheesecake.
We really wanted to enjoy a meal here. My daughter & I came to Montreal for a girls night out & made a reservation at Gibbys. There was a nice gentleman who served us water told us'JP' will be by to serve us shortly - only he never showed up. We sat for twenty minutes without taking even our drink order- the table next to us was seated after our arrival & served their drinks. We gave up after twenty minutes & went to the Keg which was great. The gentleman who served us our water felt bad for us & assured us JP was told we were here but we just had a bad taste in our mouths at that point.
Went to Gibby's as a group of four. The food & service were impeccable. Our waitress Genevieve was charismatic, & made great recommendations. She ensured to accommodate dietary restrictions, which was very important to us. She also explained the Gibby's classics to us, which was a nice touch.
The food was excellent. To my knowledge Gibby's is one of only two restaurants in Montreal where you can get beef wellington. I've been to the other restaurant too, & I must say that Gibby's is well worth the expense. Although both are excellent, Gibby's has a ton of sides included, & it makes the price worth it for sure. The portions are also generous where you are actually leaving feeling full without having to break the bank.
For Atmosphere I gave four stars as we were sat at a round table for 5 instead of four, which made it hard to share plates & it felt like we were screaming across each other. The table was also right in the waitstaff's path, & at one point a full table was lifted overhead. Otherwise it was a fine atmosphere!
The waitress Sarah is one of the kindest , reliable & professional woman. I always recommend Sarah as a waitress because I know my experience will be exceptional. Sarah makes gibbys a wonderful experience & I appreciate her & her work.
je suis allée manger à votre restaurant, & à plusieurs reprise, j'ai eu la serveuse alicia. chaque fois que c'est elle, je n'ai pas un bon service. elle est très arrogante & ne semble pas aimer son travail
Ambiance has certainly declined over the years. Filet Mignons (2) & salads were average at best. Service is above average. Prices are twice what they should be for the overall experience.
Atmosphere is good & food is pretty good. Unfortunately, there was a crying child crawling on the floor when we went but that's not Gibbys staff's fault.
Appetizers
The highlight to me was the pickle. Unfortunately, one of them was quite soft, but the other one was crunchy & delicious.
The fresh bread is great. The salad was great with lots of different flavors & the croutons & fresh.
The sorbet was a refreshing palate cleanser but honestly could have done without.
Mains
We ordered the 16 oz filet minion. It was cooked well & the meat was tender.
We also got the salmon filet. I found it to be quite salty & taste very heavy.
The vegetables were just okay & the twice baked potato was delicious.
Overall it was a nice time. I would consider coming back but I personally would probably order regular seasoning instead of the montreal steak spice.
