El Chalateco offers authentic Salvadoran fare with standout pupusas and traditional dishes like tamales and plantains, and many reviews note hot, delicious dishes at reasonable prices with generous portions and a welcoming, family-friendly vibe. The service is described as friendly and attentive overall, though busy nights can bring a slower pace. Ambience is lively and Latin-inspired, with a casual feel and a Salvadoran YouTube playlist contributing to the authentic mood. Some reviewers compare the pupusas favorably to other spots in town, with many calling this among the best for pupusas, while a minority notes smaller portions or occasional variability. Overall, El Chalateco is seen as a reliable go-to for Salvadoran comfort food, good value, and flavors that keep customers returning for family meals or casual outings.
I've been wanting to try Salvadoran food for a while now & I can confidently say I've found what will be my spot from now on. The portions were very generous & all the food was delicious. I got the Pupusa with Chicharrón, maracuyá juice & the Tepeyac plate with chicken. It was very savoury & they bring you some sauces & coleslaw you can add, although I found those extra sauces to be a bit bland. The staff is also very friendly & the service was quick. All in all recommend & will be coming back.

The food was delicious. We chose the combo for 4, plenty of food for 5 (10 pupusas, 1 yuca with chicharrón, 1 platanito with cream & a pitcher). The horchata & the tamarindo were great. The staff are very friendly. We will come back.
The food tastes traditional & is comparable to what I grew up with. The clientele is very Latin so its reassuring. The pupusas were very good & evenly stuffed.
Had the enchiladas, pupusas, & horchata (nutty cinnamon drink). Everything was delicious. The enchiladas were a perfect mix of flavours & textures, highly recommend.

100/10!! Wonderful restaurant. Food is amazing & a great price. The restaurant is very clean. I tried the horchata, loroco pupusa, res, & fried yuca for dessert. Everything was so good!
Excellent! We were really craving pupusas, as we hadn't been able to find a Salvadoran restaurant since we moved. I ordered the beef soup & pupusas rellenas, & everything was very tasty. The atmosphere is simple & relaxed, & the service was quick & efficient. We'll be back here as soon as we return to Montreal.
Friendly service, authentic food, clean place. Their pupusas aren't quite as good as La Carreta, but other menu items like soups, tacos, plantain & Meat dishes are better.
went yesterday pupusas are amazing nice & stuffed had the yuca con chicharon was nice yuca fried to perfection the chicharon was nice not dry my wife had platano frito con crema she killed it & also we ordered a pair each of taquitos de la reina & salvadoreno & it was fire seriously had a good meal & if you can when you go eat there pay it forward if you can afford it :) to brighten someones day.
Excellent Salvadorean restoraunt in Montreal! A must visit for authentic latin american food 👌 Recommend taking different platters (such as pupusas)to share with friends or family with yuca on the side & trying out drinks like horchata also!
