El Chalateco offers authentic Salvadoran fare with standout pupusas and traditional dishes like tamales and plantains, and many reviews note hot, delicious dishes at reasonable prices with generous portions and a welcoming, family-friendly vibe. The service is described as friendly and attentive overall, though busy nights can bring a slower pace. Ambience is lively and Latin-inspired, with a casual feel and a Salvadoran YouTube playlist contributing to the authentic mood. Some reviewers compare the pupusas favorably to other spots in town, with many calling this among the best for pupusas, while a minority notes smaller portions or occasional variability. Overall, El Chalateco is seen as a reliable go-to for Salvadoran comfort food, good value, and flavors that keep customers returning for family meals or casual outings.
The food was so good, I'm using my second account to give a good review 😅 the pupusas were fresh, the tacos were tasty & crunchy, & I do not regret trying horchata for the first time here 🩷
Finally was able to try Restaurant El Chalateco, a Salvadorean spot. The servers were all warm & welcoming. They have 6 combo deals ($11.00 to $16.49) if you order before 5:00pm. You get to choose your pupusa/tamale/drink.
- Curtido & salsa roja - salsa was thin, watery
- Platano con crema ($4.50) - decent but could have been crispier & more caramelized
Yuca was excellent & came with several chunks of fried pork
- Combo #6 ($12.50) - 1 tamal (pollo), 2 pupusas (revuelta & de queso y espinaca) & a drink (horchata). Pupusas were tasty. Tamale was moist & fluffy. Horchata was nicely spiced
I ordered the horchata - super fresh & flavorful, definitely a must-try! 🤍 The pupusas were good, but I personally prefer a bit more cheese & pork in the filling:)
I also had the fried pork with plantains & yuca, & it was delicious. The pork was nicely seasoned & crispy, & the combo with sweet plantains & starchy yuca worked really well.
Overall, great spot for Salvadoran comfort food 🤎🤍🤎🤍🤎

I've been going there for a long time now, for years!! & it always as delicious as when I first tried it. I love their pupusas. I also usually take the Tepeyac & a horchata. The service is amazing & the staffs very friendly. It's a very authentic place. I got to try a a lot of their items in the menu & it's delicious too!
I definitely recommend all of you to go there if you want to discover or are craving salvadorian food! Much gracias, hasta la proxima!
The food was delicious. We chose the combo for 4, plenty of food for 5 (10 pupusas, 1 yuca with chicharrón, 1 platanito with cream & a pitcher). The horchata & the tamarindo were great. The staff are very friendly. We will come back.
Had the enchiladas, pupusas, & horchata (nutty cinnamon drink). Everything was delicious. The enchiladas were a perfect mix of flavours & textures, highly recommend.

100/10!! Wonderful restaurant. Food is amazing & a great price. The restaurant is very clean. I tried the horchata, loroco pupusa, res, & fried yuca for dessert. Everything was so good!
Excellent Salvadorean restoraunt in Montreal! A must visit for authentic latin american food 👌 Recommend taking different platters (such as pupusas)to share with friends or family with yuca on the side & trying out drinks like horchata also!
