My girlfriend & I have a tradition of celebrating special occasions by exploring Montreal's culinary scene. For our anniversary this year, we chose Dorsia, a restaurant whose reputation & glowing reviews met our standards for an anniversary dinner. Unfortunately, the experience never quite lived up to the expectations. Before we had even been seated, the evening got off to an awkward start. Upon arrival, we were immediately informed that we would need to leave our table by 9:30 p.m., roughly two hours after our reservation time. While we fully understand that restaurants may have scheduling constraints & multiple seatings throughout the evening, leading with such a statement guests feels unprofessional & somewhat impersonal. There are certainly more tactful ways to communicate timing expectations without making diners feel like they are already on the clock before they have sat down.
On a more positive note, our server, JF, was pleasant, attentive, & knowledgeable. He explained each dish thoroughly & carried himself professionally throughout the evening. The service issues that followed were clearly not a reflection of his attitude, but rather of the restaurant's overall execution.
For a restaurant positioning itself at the upper end of Montreal's dining spectrum, some of the mistakes we encountered were surprisingly amateur. The first came before our meal had even begun. While the tables seated around the same time as us were promptly served bread & butter, our table was completely overlooked. It was only after our entrées had arrived & we started eating it that bread was finally offered. A clear indication that someone had realized the oversight. Even though this seems minor, these details matter in restaurants that claim to be fine dining, where careful attention to detail are part of what guests are paying for.
The most disappointing mistake, however, came when our main courses were delivered without any utensils. We sat staring at beautifully plated dishes with no means of eating them until we flagged down staff & requested cutlery ourselves. This is not something we have ever experienced. Not at casual restaurants, not at neighborhood bistros, & certainly not at establishments charging premium prices. For a restaurant of Dorsia's caliber, it is simply inexcusable.
Ironically, despite the emphasis placed on the 9:30 departure time, the pacing of the meal was remarkably slow. Our main courses did not arrive until approximately 8:55 p.m., leaving us only about 35 minutes before the deadline we had been warned about from the moment we arrived. Because of this, what should have been a relaxed anniversary dinner became an experience where we felt increasingly rushed to finish our meal. If a restaurant chooses to impose strict time limits, it should at the very least ensure that the kitchen & service flow allow guests enough time to comfortably enjoy the experience they are paying for.
As for the food, visually, every plate was stunning. Presentation is clearly one of the restaurant's strengths. However, the flavors rarely matched the aesthetics. The scallops lacked depth & seasoning, resulting in a very bland dish. The beef tartare was enjoyable, but offered nothing particularly distinctive or memorable compared to many others available in Montreal. The Doré was perhaps the biggest disappointment of the evening. It was technically well presented, but it was almost entirely devoid of flavor. The steak fared slightly better, but it leaned *heavily* toward the rare side & ultimately failed to leave a lasting impression.
One aspect of the evening that we still struggle to understand is whether some of the treatment we received was influenced by our age. As a younger couple, we could not help but wonder if assumptions were made about us from the moment we walked through the door. We sincerely hope that was not the case. Regardless, no guest should leave a restaurant questioning whether they were treated differently than others around them.
What a cool experience. Very moody interior, unique dishes, & great service! Great for a date night. The beef tartare was incredible!!
Dorsia absolutely exceeded expectations. We originally stopped in just for drinks, no plans for a full dinner but despite being a group of six, they were incredibly accommodating & welcomed us without hesitation. What started as a casual stop turned into the best experience of the night.
We began with drinks, & every single one was exceptional beautifully crafted, balanced, & memorable. After taking a look at the menu, most of us couldn't resist & ended up ordering food as well & I'm so glad we did. The dishes were truly outstanding, easily matching the quality of the cocktails.
One standout for me personally was the pickled stuffed olives completely mind-blowing & unexpectedly one of the highlights of the night.
The service elevated everything even further. Our server was kind, attentive, & gave excellent recommendations throughout the evening. But what really made the experience unforgettable was Lucas. He handled our lively, chatty group with ease even as the restaurant quieted down & still managed to provide a personalized & thoughtful experience. He went out of his way to walk my friend through the variety of martinis they offer, which was a really nice touch.
Dorsia delivers on every level drinks, food, & service. What started as a spontaneous visit turned into a night we'll all remember. Definitely a top-tier spot & one I'd highly recommend.
We had an amazing overall dining experience at Dorsia tonight. Did the 4 course tasting menu, all of the dishes were fantastic, the decor is beautiful, & service here was flawless. This truly is a special restaurant to visit for a special occasion, we were blown away tonight & would highly recommend it here!
I will leave my original review up so you can understand why we returned. My first experience was so positive that I gathered some friends to return & what a disappointment. From the moment we arrived it was a terrible, terrible experience. From the way we were poorly greeted, to all dishes being barely warm, & pretty bland, it was like a totally different restaurant. Yet the price was super steep so for that reason I would no longer recommend Dorsia. We did share with management our genuine disappointment so hopefully they can level back up .. in the meantime, there are too many other amazing places to eat in Montreal!
An incredible evening & meal! This restaurant delivers on all fronts, chic ambiance, attentive staff, superb cocktails (especially the limencello martini), & incredible food! Not a surprise that they are en route to a Michelin Star. Well deserved!
Had a good experience at Dorsia. Heard a lot about it & was happy to try it out.
First of all - the place is truly beautiful, well designed & tasteful layout.
The service was good. We tried a few different dishes. The highlight was the red beet agnolotti & tuna carpaccio were standout dishes: unique presentation, texture & flavours.
The place is was nice & ambiance was good BUT The food took way too long to come out...& especially during courses... (our 2nd course were 3 pasta dishes - it shouldn't take close to an hour for this to come out) almost to the point where I was dosing to sleep at the table. It was clear that they were having issues in the kitchen because the staff also seemed stressed.
The food was okay, not outstanding & missing some flavors that tie the dishes together.
Our server, I think his name was Guillaume was amazing though, 5 stars for him. He joked with us, was very conversational & was attentive after realizing we were looking quite bored/tired from waiting for our food that he went to the back to double check the status of some of our courses.
If it wasn't for the delay of food... which it seems is a common theme based on the other reviews, maybe the food would've tasted better to us but having to wait nearly 45 min to an hour for each course left a sour taste & unfortunately we didn't really enjoy.
The reality is after waiting for so long for our first course we just sadly waited for the whole dinner to finish so we can go home to sleep...
Following a viewing of the film'American Psycho,' I was fortunate enough to secure a reservation at Dorsia last night. The evening was made truly exceptional by the impeccable service provided by Lucas, Florence, & Mathias, who ensured a remarkable dining experience. The culinary offerings were outstanding. We commenced our meal with the grilled octopus, an excellent appetizer. For the main course, I selected the Paccheri pasta, while my friend enjoyed the duck crown à l'orange. Both dishes were prepared to perfection & entirely delicious.
The restaurant's ambiance was equally impressive; the venue itself is absolutely gorgeous. Overall, this was a fantastic experience. The combination of exceptional service, delicious food, & a beautiful setting makes Dorsia a standout establishment. I am already looking forward to my next visit.
I recently had dinner at Dorsia in Montreal & was genuinely impressed. We ordered the octopus & the steak, & both dishes were absolutely delicious with surprisingly generous portions. Yes, it's expensive, but you definitely get your money's worth. The atmosphere & décor were stylish & inviting, but what truly made the evening exceptional was the service. Our waitress, Florence, went above & beyond. She was attentive, friendly, & incredibly knowledgeable, elevating the entire experience. I will definitely be back.
I went to Dorsia with the expectation of an elegant experience... & honestly, I left completely disappointed.
For starters, the place is beautiful, yes, but the service was slow & pretentious. It seemed that the waiters were more focused on showing off than on attending. They took a long time to bring even the water, & anything you asked for seemed to be annoying.
Food does not justify exaggerated prices at all. I ordered homemade pasta & arrived warm, tasteless, as if she had been left resting for too long. The duck dish - which is supposed to be one of its forts - was dry & unfunny. Honestly, I have eaten much better in many simpler restaurants.
The expensive cocktails for what they are, & the atmosphere is too noisy for a place that is supposed to'fine dining.'.
In summary:
❌ The bad thing I experienced
Slow service & not attentive.
Unflavored dishes & warm served.
Prices totally disproportionate to quality.
Noisy & uncomfortable environment.
Lots of appearance, little substance.
Because of the price & fame, I was expecting something memorable... & the only memorable thing was disappointment.
