Review Summary

Reviews describe Comète Bake Shop as a calm, tiny bakery with a focus on Japanese sweet and savory bakes, delivering consistently delicious pastries and a warm, friendly vibe from the owners who run an open kitchen. The menu blends delicate, not too sweet items with savory options, and standouts include the curry pan, the matcha melon pan, miso cardamom pastries, yuzu brioche, and mango sesame babka, all praised for quality and balance. The space is small with limited seating and items can sell out, but the overall experience is noted for approachable prices, attentive service, and the sense of a hidden gem in the Plateau. Many reviews highlight how the shop pairs well with coffee and creates a memorable, flavorful exploration of Japanese inspired baked goods, inviting repeat visits.

Very calm & peaceful tiny bakery specializing in Japanese sweet & savoury bakes. I have been several times & always try something new - everything is so good!

I've been to Comète twice & both times the staff were lovely & welcoming. Also appreciate the open kitchen concept & watching them bake.

I love the texture of the buns: soft with a bit of bite & chew. The cookies were my preferred texture of slight crunchy rim with a moist & crumbly centre. All the flavours are more pronounced than what is usually expected of Japanese flavoured pastries that can be too subtle sometimes. It's also not overtly sweet.

I shared a hand poured coffee (on special during weekdays when you buy a dessert) which was smooth & not too bitter. My mom who never drinks black coffee loved it black.

My only critique is the yuzu chocolate bun, the bun itself was little dry.

Highly recommend going early if you want to try one of their viennoiserie as they sell out quick!

Montreal is lucky to have this Japanese bakery. The pastries & the filtered coffee(!) are delicious , & the owners are really lovely.

This shop is the epitome of Japan hidden on a side street in the Plateau. Open kitchen where wares are prepared fresh daily for all to see. Friendly, smiling owner proud of her work. A good variety of not-too-sweet & also savory products that were delicious & unique. Really enjoyed the curry pan & the mango black sesame babka. Vege croquette option also available. You will not regret trying, & a definite repeat!

Cozy place run by a wonderful couple - pastries with a Japanese twist are delicious & original. The curry pastry stuffed with ground meat makes for a filling meal. The sesame & mango babka is to die for ♥?

Very cute Japanese bakery in Le Plateau! Staff is very friendly & cinnamon brioche was delicious. We will come back to try the matcha melon pan. One thing to note, store is small with limited seating.

The Comete bake shop on Montreal's rue Fabre in the Plateau used to offer a superb selection of Japanese baked goods. Unfortunately, the bakery is still closed undergoing renovation after a disastrous fire. A very limited selection of Comete's products is available daily from the Kyoto florists on Avenue Mont-Royal half a block beyond Papineau. I honestly wish that Comete would reopen soon & again regale us with its full range of delicious products.

It's an amazing bakery with actual Japanese pastries & breads. I recommend it to anyone & especially those who would want actual Japanese baked goods. The staff are super nice. For now I recommend coming early as they usually run out of items & will close the store early.

Be prepared to line up 45min-1H (we waited 1h)

The bread's quality was great, & the visuals were pleasing, but I got extremely disappointed at the sweetness level of all the pastries. They were all overly sweet. The famous Melon Pan's jam was sickeningly sweet! I felt the sugar throughout my jaw, a complete let down considering they are bakers from Japan, that sweetness level would have been unacceptable in Japan. I never had breads this sweet in Japan.. perhaps they adjusted to match the palates of the locals... but then what's the point?
