Review Summary

Comète BAKE SHOP is a tiny, well-loved Japanese bakery in a busy area, with an open kitchen and daily prep that give it a fresh, artisanal vibe and a warm, friendly feel from the staff. Reviews highlight a thoughtful balance of not-too-sweet pastries and inventive savory bites, with standouts like curry pan, matcha melon pan, miso cardamom pastries, and croquettes alongside sweet favorites such as mango black sesame babka and yuzu brioche. The textures are often praised, from pillowy breads to delicate confections, and the coffee pairing is appreciated too. Seating is limited and weekends can be crowded, so arriving early or visiting on weekdays is advised. The bakery was temporarily closed due to a fire and has since reopened, much welcomed by regulars. Overall, it comes across as an authentic, charming bakery that draws guests for multiple items, friendly service, and a distinct Japanese influence in a neighborhood setting.

Montreal is lucky to have this Japanese bakery. The pastries & the filtered coffee(!) are delicious , & the owners are really lovely.

Purchased some filter coffee & 4 pastries

The pour-over coffee was a darker roast than my preference, but the delicacy & care taken in it's making won me over. The coffee had a complex & subtle flavour I enjoyed that I find uncharacteristic of roasts of that darkness.

The confectionaries were all excellently crafted.

Matcha Melon Pan had delicious, rich jam that paired well with the bitterness of the matcha crust. A stand out for me.

The Cannelle-Anko was tender, & red bean flavour was delicate.

The Cardamom-Miso confectionary was subtle & well balanced.

The chocolate yuzu was tasty - the yuzu flavor was very forward; for me, it slightly overpowered the chocolate. Still, the pastry was delicious.

The 4 items & 2 coffees came to around $25 CAD. The service was great & the atmosphere was quiet. This was around 11:00am, so everything may be even better if they are fresh, earlier in the morning.

Cozy place run by a wonderful couple - pastries with a Japanese twist are delicious & original. The curry pastry stuffed with ground meat makes for a filling meal. The sesame & mango babka is to die for ♥?

A wonderful little bakery operated by a charming couple & serving original creations. Our favorites are the curry pan, croquet, cardamom & cinnamon pastries, & everything containing matcha. The yuzu juice is amazing. Weekends are extremely busy, so come early or on weekdays.

It's an amazing bakery with actual Japanese pastries & breads. I recommend it to anyone & especially those who would want actual Japanese baked goods. The staff are super nice. For now I recommend coming early as they usually run out of items & will close the store early.

The pastries were ok & a bit too sweet… also the fact they don't let me order with my dog (take out, not staying in) made the experience not so pleasant

Really nice pastries & I expected them to be more expensive too! I went there 10 mins before opening & was in the first ones to get in :) so go early if you don't want to queue up!! The cardamome pastry really pleased my soul as it's a flavor I don't often find in pastry shops but I love it ! I can't wait to try their strawberry matcha pastry next time & the croquette looked great too! Very cute interior design but unfortunately it's small & you can't really sit down, which is the only downside :)

Be prepared to line up 45min-1H (we waited 1h)

The bread's quality was great, & the visuals were pleasing, but I got extremely disappointed at the sweetness level of all the pastries. They were all overly sweet. The famous Melon Pan's jam was sickeningly sweet! I felt the sugar throughout my jaw, a complete let down considering they are bakers from Japan, that sweetness level would have been unacceptable in Japan. I never had breads this sweet in Japan.. perhaps they adjusted to match the palates of the locals... but then what's the point?
