I went to Cococina on a Saturday night in February with friends… one of those girls nights where no one is in a rush & the plan is just to sit, share plates, take lots of photos & videos & let the conversation stretch as long as it wants.
It's a newer spot… opened in December… but it already feels like it fits perfectly in the old port.
The space pulled me in right away. Low lighting, warm tones, abstract silhouette lamps, these beautiful backlit murals… everything feels intentional. It kind of felt like we left Montréal for a few hours without actually getting on a flight.
There was a DJ playing in the background… enough to give the night some energy, but still soft enough that we could stay in our little bubble at the table. That balance is rare & they got it right.
We leaned into the shared plates… which honestly feels like the best way to do it here.
The roasted cauliflower was one of those dishes you keep reaching for without realizing… glazed in this Moroccan barbecue sauce with lemon confit. Smoky, tangy, a little sweet… everything just made sense together.
The scarpetta Cococina… braised lamb with basil oil & parmigiana… was rich in that comforting, slow-cooked way. The kind of dish where you pause for a second after a bite because it's actually that good.
We also tried the chips & dip with smoked salmon, caviar, & truffle crema… a little extra, a little fun. Definitely a'we're out, let's enjoy this' kind of plate.
The only thing that didn't fully land for me was the fried calamari. It was fine… just didn't have the same moment as the other dishes.
Overall, this felt like a place you go for the full experience… not just the food, but the feeling of being there. The lighting, the music, the pacing of the night.
I'd come back for another girl dinner with friends… or maybe a cute date.
this was easily the worst, most chaotic & infuriating restaurant experience i have ever had, & the fact that we paid around $400 for this mess makes it even more insane.
from the moment we walked in, it was clear they had no idea what they were doing. we had a reservation for two hours, yet before we even sat down properly they were already rushing us & acting like we had no time. they kept repeating that we needed to order immediately because we'only had 30 minutes' which is completely absurd considering we booked in advance. & the worst part? instead of letting us actually look at the menu & order, the waitress stood there stressing us out, talking non stop about how rushed we were. she literally wasted around 15 minutes of our time just panicking & pressuring us while also telling us we had no time to eat. it made zero sense & just created unnecessary anxiety. honestly, someone like that should not be working in a restaurant at all. the way she handled the situation was completely incompetent & stressful for no reason.
it didn't stop there. staff kept coming back over & over to rush us, making it impossible to enjoy anything. we couldn't relax for a single second because they made us feel like we were being kicked out the entire time.
at some point it got so ridiculous that we had to start doing their job ourselves, moving chairs, handling plates, reorganizing everything because no one there could manage anything properly. then we were basically pushed off our table & moved to the bar mid meal like we were nothing.
asking for the manager was a complete joke. the guy (simo) or whatever his name has no idea what he is doing, takes no control, no solutions, no accountability. just a disorganized mess from start to finish.
we paid so much for such mediocre food just to be stressed out, rushed & treated like we were in the way the entire time.
absolute disaster. never again. keep this in mind before thinking of going there.
We had an absolutely wonderful experience at Cococina. The food was outstanding-beautifully presented, full of flavor, & clearly made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. Every dish we tried exceeded our expectations. The cocktails were just as impressive: creative, perfectly balanced, & expertly crafted.
The atmosphere was warm, vibrant, & inviting, making it the perfect place to relax & enjoy a special evening. But what truly made our night unforgettable was the exceptional service from Andrea. She was attentive, friendly, & professional, always making sure we had everything we needed with a genuine smile. Her attention to detail & kindness made us feel truly valued as guests.
We will definitely be coming back & highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a fantastic dining experience.
The food was absolutely delicious, but unfortunately the service was very disappointing.
Our waitress, a blonde woman, was rude from the moment our meals arrived. As soon as the food was served, she told us we only had 15 minutes left to eat, which was shocking considering we had just received our dishes. We then felt pressured to rush through our meal, especially since we were only allowed to stay for one hour - something that was never communicated to us beforehand.
When it came time to order dessert, she told us there was only one option available (a flan). However, the table next to us was able to order multiple different desserts, which left us confused & feeling misled.
Her attitude remained unpleasant throughout the entire evening, until it was time to pay. At that point, she suddenly became friendly, smiling & joking - clearly to encourage a tip.
It's truly a shame, because the food was incredible & the atmosphere & music were great. Sadly, the poor service completely ruined our Valentine's Day date.
We visited Cococina in Montreal with my wife. The interior has a very interesting modern design, & the staff were friendly & welcoming. The cocktails were very good, & the food was tasty. At first glance, nothing feels overly unusual, but the food is genuinely good.
There were a couple of points that could be improved. My wife was initially given a fork that had not been properly cleaned, which could be a serious issue for many guests. Also, the second cocktail my wife ordered was accidentally forgotten, even though the restaurant was not yet fully busy. When I asked for the bill, the staff quickly prepared the cocktail, removed it from our bill, & apologized, which we appreciated.
Overall, it's a nice restaurant with tasty food, great cocktails, & an interesting atmosphere. The service could be a bit more polished, but it's still a pleasant experience.
