Review Summary

Reviews describe Chez Anna as a warm, unpretentious homey spot with a strong Hungarian influence, where everything is made to order and portions are notably generous. Patrons highlight fresh ingredients, comforting soups, hearty stews, and standout dishes like schnitzel with spaetzle, goulash, and fish and chips, as well as sweet notes from apple strudel and crepes. A market setting inside a small grocery storefront adds a unique backdrop, with an open kitchen and a casual family run vibe that makes guests feel at home. Service is described as friendly and attentive by many, though a few note occasional slow timing. Many reviewers call it a hidden gem and a great value for Montreal, with generous portions that align with homemade flavors. Some comments mention the ambience with music and a diverse clientele, which enhances the welcoming neighbourhood feel. Overall the consensus is that Chez Anna offers authentic comforting home cooking with a distinct Central European twist and is worth a return visit.

Chez Anna is everything I love about eating out: trying something fun & delicious prepared by someone who clearly loves what they do & food too.

We each sampled a schnitzel with spaetzel, my partner had the pork & I had the chicken. It was perfectly prepared, wasn't greasy at all. Anna accommodated my allergy easily & swapped my side for cucumber salad which was also excellent.

We also had her chicken noodle soup to start which was tasty & fresh too.

If I lived in Montreal, I'd be here all the time.

Chez Anna pushes generous portions hard. Fish & chips come stacked: large fillets, light batter, & their battered fries hit the same crisp-satisfying note. The fish is fresh, which shows in both texture & flavor, & makes sense given the place doubles as a fish shop.

There is a strong Hungarian thread in the menu. Hearty stews, comforting sides, & seasoning profiles you don't often see in similar casual spots. That mix of a fish counter with Central European comfort food makes the place feel distinct.

Tucked away & easy to overlook, it fits the hidden gem label. Unpretentious, good value, & memorable for both portion size & the unexpected range of dishes.

This was our first time at Chez Anna, & we were so impressed! The food was incredibly fresh, full of flavor, & had that comforting, home-cooked taste that's hard to find at restaurants. You can tell everything is prepared with care. The staff at Chez Anna were warm, accommodating, & genuinely friendly, which made us feel right at home.

My brother-in-law, who's a regular, brought us here while we were visiting from out of town, & now we understand why he loves it so much. The atmosphere is cozy & welcoming-perfect for sharing a meal with family. Chez Anna is the kind of place you instantly want to come back to. We'll definitely be making this a must-stop every time we're in town!

What a jewel. The ultimate place, if you want to experience home cooking quality dishes. I had the veal crêpe (remember to ask for a bun to lap up sauce). The main, Goulash was everything one could expect. I had the plum strudel, & you tell it was made there. My son had apple, you could taste how fresh the apples were. The restaurant section is a portion, within "marketplace ". There's à Piano + Guitar if anyone wants to play. I'll definitely be back. BTW 3 course meal for 2 was < $80. Simply can't béat that.

First let's understand what your expectations should be before you eat here. This is old school home style authentic Hungarian cooking at a high & genuine level. You come for the food, bonus is spontaneous music for anyone to play the on display piano & guitar, the warm friendly staff & service. They are going to be moving things around so that the dining area has its own section but I find this also quite fun & different. Great portions & very reasonable prices. They also do catering & will also take special (off menu) orders but best to call in advance to be sure they are prepared. Though reservations are not mandatory they have limited seating & it's best to be sure by reservation. If you are a Hungarian speaker - do feel comfortable to speak with the staff as they appreciate this very much. The menu is not wide, however, everything on the menu is awesome. They have a fruit & vegetable grocery at the front & fresh seafood & fish at the back. Fish variety if not wide but they are all top notch quality & fresh. I personally with to thank the staff & ownership for continuing the tradition of cooking Hungarian food to the Montreal populous as we need more restaurants like yours.

Excellent cuisine. A true hidden gem to say the least. It is inside the Waldmans' on St Laurent blvd near Rachel. Looks like a fruit & veg depanneur from the outside. Don't let that away you. Nice little tables set up.in the back. Worth the search. Anna cooks everything from scratch. So fresh & tasty! An the apple strudel!!!! Delicious Will definitely return. They have take out also. You have to try it.
