Review Summary

Chez Anna is widely celebrated as a hidden gem that offers an authentic and cozy dining experience, making visitors feel as though they are enjoying a home-cooked meal in a welcoming environment. Renowned for its generous portions and hearty Hungarian cuisine, the restaurant features standout dishes such as schnitzel, goulash, and chicken paprikash, alongside a selection of fresh seafood. While the location within a grocery market may be unassuming, the warm service and the passion put into every dish create a memorable atmosphere. Despite the unpretentious setting and modest menu, the consistently high quality of the food and the genuine hospitality provided ensure that patrons frequently return for a comforting and satisfying culinary experience.

Hidden in the rear of Waldman's fish market is a hidden gem. With a few tables to eat at, this Hungarian restaurant serves all the delights. From Cucumber & Beet salads to Veal Paprikash & Beef Goulash, all is made to order.
The menu is small. Explanations of the dishes are clear.
If you are in the area & are looking for something new, different, & delicious, this is the place to stop.

They are now in Boul Saint Laurent , nice place with some Hungarian grocery, with fresh fish, same good food , their sandwich is my favorite , visit & you can enjoy the food the way it was. I will come back again.

Chez Anna pushes generous portions hard. Fish & chips come stacked: large fillets, light batter, & their battered fries hit the same crisp-satisfying note. The fish is fresh, which shows in both texture & flavor, & makes sense given the place doubles as a fish shop.

There is a strong Hungarian thread in the menu. Hearty stews, comforting sides, & seasoning profiles you don't often see in similar casual spots. That mix of a fish counter with Central European comfort food makes the place feel distinct.

Tucked away & easy to overlook, it fits the hidden gem label. Unpretentious, good value, & memorable for both portion size & the unexpected range of dishes.

Ambiance chaleureuse
Cuisine familiale simple,

A small diamond in the ruff hidden in the back of the small grocery store Étoile Waldmans, those who like homemade Hungarian schnitzels , spetzel & goulash, will like Chez Anna, also fish specials & daily specials everyday. Fast ,warm & friendly. Food is made to order & delicious.

All the dishes on the menu are excellent!! However, it's too bad the restaurant isn't really visible from the outside & the atmosphere could be better given it's in depanneur/fish store.

First let's understand what your expectations should be before you eat here. This is old school home style authentic Hungarian cooking at a high & genuine level. You come for the food, bonus is spontaneous music for anyone to play the on display piano & guitar, the warm friendly staff & service. They are going to be moving things around so that the dining area has its own section but I find this also quite fun & different. Great portions & very reasonable prices. They also do catering & will also take special (off menu) orders but best to call in advance to be sure they are prepared. Though reservations are not mandatory they have limited seating & it's best to be sure by reservation. If you are a Hungarian speaker - do feel comfortable to speak with the staff as they appreciate this very much. The menu is not wide, however, everything on the menu is awesome. They have a fruit & vegetable grocery at the front & fresh seafood & fish at the back. Fish variety if not wide but they are all top notch quality & fresh. I personally with to thank the staff & ownership for continuing the tradition of cooking Hungarian food to the Montreal populous as we need more restaurants like yours.

Wonderful food & hospitality in a wholly original location. A recent transplant to St Laurent Boulevard, tucked away in a grocery store with a fish monger, plus piano & guitar, this is a divine dining experience, reminiscent of the "old Montreal" that drew so many of us to this once-incredible city. Anna is lovely, the spätzle is incredible, the eggplant is excellent, the prices are right. It's also apportez votre vin but if you forget, the grocery store sells wine. Looking forward to coming back soon!!

Don't blink twice because you might miss this little warm hearted co-mingled eatery, depanneur, grocery & fish monger store. But despite this multi functional environment that may throw some people off, once you look past that you'll see that these hungarian ladies wear their hearts & pride on their sleeves & welcome you to their place with their hospitality & their smiles & especially their home cooked AUTHENTIC recipes. if you want to taste a little bit of Hungary 🇭🇺, come here. Their cuisine speaks volumes. Thank you for bringing me back to the old country!
