Review Summary

Chez Anna is described as a warm, homey, family run spot serving fresh, authentic Eastern European comfort food with generous portions. Dishes like schnitzel, goulash, spaetzle and apple strudel are praised for flavor and the sense that everything is made to order, with the food often felt to taste homemade. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, even though the restaurant is tucked inside a grocery store and easy to miss, and service is generally friendly and attentive, though occasionally a bit slow. The place is celebrated as a hidden gem offering hearty, comforting meals at good value, with many visitors planning to return.

You must, must come here! The food is incredible. Literally all the dishes are spectacular.

This is an undiscovered gem. You have to walk through a grocery store to get to the restaurant, but do not fret. IT IS WORTH IT.

The atmosphere is not fantastic, but I tell you it does not matter, because the food is that good. Service is incredible.

Eating here is like a warm hug from a Hungarian aunty. 10/10.

Chez Anna pushes generous portions hard. Fish & chips come stacked: large fillets, light batter, & their battered fries hit the same crisp-satisfying note. The fish is fresh, which shows in both texture & flavor, & makes sense given the place doubles as a fish shop.

There is a strong Hungarian thread in the menu. Hearty stews, comforting sides, & seasoning profiles you don't often see in similar casual spots. That mix of a fish counter with Central European comfort food makes the place feel distinct.

Tucked away & easy to overlook, it fits the hidden gem label. Unpretentious, good value, & memorable for both portion size & the unexpected range of dishes.

I really wanted to like this place because of the amazing reviews, but we just weren't impressed. Yes it's home style food, but it wasn't even salted & there was hardly any flavor. We had a cucumber salad, paprika chicken, & the stuffed crepe. The cucumber salad was the best thing we had but the other two dishes were very meh.
We love trying new cuisines from different countries & I'm eastern european so I know these kinds of comfort foods, but this place just didn't do it for us.

Service was fine, lady was nice, & I liked the casual feel of the seating.

I'll start with the phone call for making the reservation. What Anna told me describes the restaurant perfectly:'we got good food & we got alcohol. The only thing you need to bring is your appetite'

You want good authentic hungarian food? That is your spot. Most generous portions I have seen in MTL for a while!

So far you understand you come to a mom-&-pops type restaurant, you'll have a great time. The menu is one page, & each meal they make they make well!!

Anna is a great host & Lili was a very good waitress, it felt like we were at home.

We took the salads, soups & the crepe appetizer. The crepe is like nothijg you had before, definitely would recommend as an introduction to hungarian food.

Then the schnitzel, cordon bleu & rabbit for main dishes. All of them delicious.

The desserts are either an apple or cherry strudel. both are equally delicious! Anna really knows her craft.

I cannot believe it is still a hidden gem, you must visit!

What a jewel. The ultimate place, if you want to experience home cooking quality dishes. I had the veal crêpe (remember to ask for a bun to lap up sauce). The main, Goulash was everything one could expect. I had the plum strudel, & you tell it was made there. My son had apple, you could taste how fresh the apples were. The restaurant section is a portion, within "marketplace ". There's à Piano + Guitar if anyone wants to play. I'll definitely be back. BTW 3 course meal for 2 was < $80. Simply can't béat that.

All the dishes on the menu are excellent!! However, it's too bad the restaurant isn't really visible from the outside & the atmosphere could be better given it's in depanneur/fish store.

Hidden in the rear of Waldman's fish market is a hidden gem. With a few tables to eat at, this Hungarian restaurant serves all the delights. From Cucumer & Beet salads to Veal Paprikash & Beef Goulash, all is made to order. The menu is small. Explanations of the dishes are clear. If you are in the area & are looking for something new, different, & delicious, this is the place to stop.

Excellent food prepared by a sweet cook making authentic Hungarian dishes! Eatery tucked into the back of a mainly Latino grocery store with plans to expand their Hungarian food offerings.

Quaint little place which taste like a home cooked meal made by your own grandmother. The owner is very kind & attentive. My husband had the lamb goulash & I had the kashakaval dish (warning, it’s a lot of cheese!). Both dishes were delicious!
