Chez Anna pushes generous portions hard. Fish & chips come stacked: large fillets, light batter, & their battered fries hit the same crisp-satisfying note. The fish is fresh, which shows in both texture & flavor, & makes sense given the place doubles as a fish shop.
There is a strong Hungarian thread in the menu. Hearty stews, comforting sides, & seasoning profiles you don't often see in similar casual spots. That mix of a fish counter with Central European comfort food makes the place feel distinct.
Tucked away & easy to overlook, it fits the hidden gem label. Unpretentious, good value, & memorable for both portion size & the unexpected range of dishes.
Got a Hungarian Auntie? If not, no worries - head over to Chez Anna! It's your go-to spot for that warm, homemade feel, just like visiting a friendly auntie's kitchen. The atmosphere is genuine & cozy, making it a perfect place to relax. While the menu isn't huge, every dish is worth the trip, & you're bound to run into plenty of locals, adding to the authentic vibe.
Wow. Chez Anna's is the real deal. The food here is next-level, pure comfort, pure flavour, pure love. It honestly feels like walking into someone's home & being served the kind of Hungarian cooking that you can't find anywhere else in Montreal.
Every dish was bursting with flavor, rich, hearty, & made from scratch. You can taste the care in every bite. It's the kind of food that makes you slow down & just enjoy the moment.
On top of that, Anna makes you feel like family the second you walk in. Warm, welcoming, & genuine, it's the perfect mix with the unbelievable food.
If you want something authentic, home-cooked, & unforgettable, Chez Anna's on St. Lawrence is a must.
Plus Anna has to be the sweetest person around!
My husband was longing for Hungarian food & we found Chez Anna & thought we would try it. We had Hortobágyi palacsinta, Tejfölös uborkasaláta & csirkepaprikás. It was delicious. Anna was very friendly, what a gem to find. We don't have any Hungarian restraunts in Vancouver, BC anymore so this was such a a delight.
Absolutely delicious! My Hungarian roots (but minimal to no knowledge of said culture) absolutely loved the meal!!!!
The Schnitzel (Becsi szelet) & the cucumber were fantastic. Reminds me of the Hungarian restaurants of old.
I was hoping for a bit more of hungarian choices but a good start & good service!
A small diamond in the ruff hidden in the back of the small grocery store Étoile Waldmans, those who like homemade Hungarian schnitzels , spetzel & goulash, will like Chez Anna, also fish specials & daily specials everyday. Fast ,warm & friendly. Food is made to order & delicious.
I'll start with the phone call for making the reservation. What Anna told me describes the restaurant perfectly:'we got good food & we got alcohol. The only thing you need to bring is your appetite'
You want good authentic hungarian food? That is your spot. Most generous portions I have seen in MTL for a while!
So far you understand you come to a mom-&-pops type restaurant, you'll have a great time. The menu is one page, & each meal they make they make well!!
Anna is a great host & Lili was a very good waitress, it felt like we were at home.
We took the salads, soups & the crepe appetizer. The crepe is like nothijg you had before, definitely would recommend as an introduction to hungarian food.
Then the schnitzel, cordon bleu & rabbit for main dishes. All of them delicious.
The desserts are either an apple or cherry strudel. both are equally delicious! Anna really knows her craft.
I cannot believe it is still a hidden gem, you must visit!
Delicious home-made authentic Hungarian food. Genuine spice ingredients typical for the region. Yummy!
Service kind & fast.
It was my first time dining at that restaurant, having intentions to visit it way more often.
Great authentic Hungarian food. Everything felt home-cooked in the best possible way.
Avy-Loren Cohen's review is spot on. This isn't so much a formal restaurant as it is a small grocery store with an attached kitchen & dedicated dining area in the back (there are about 8 or so 4 person tables). What you can expect food-wise is an authentic Hungarian home-cooked meal. If that's the vibe you're looking for, then you absolutely won't be disappointed. As far as quality goes, the food was excellent, the service was prompt & very kind, & the value given the amount of food you get is solid. I would absolutely recommend Chez Anna if you are looking for a homestyle Hungarian meal in the city.
Fantastic & authentic Hungarian home cooked food. As my dear friend, who grew up with his Hungarian mother's cooking, it reminds him of his earlier days eating at his mom's dinner table. Flavorful & hearty comfort food, feels like a warm hug on a plate. Loved it, & will definitely be back for more.
Hidden in the rear of Waldman's fish market is a hidden gem. With a few tables to eat at, this Hungarian restaurant serves all the delights. From Cucumer & Beet salads to Veal Paprikash & Beef Goulash, all is made to order. The menu is small. Explanations of the dishes are clear. If you are in the area & are looking for something new, different, & delicious, this is the place to stop.
First let's understand what your expectations should be before you eat here. This is old school home style authentic Hungarian cooking at a high & genuine level. You come for the food, bonus is spontaneous music for anyone to play the on display piano & guitar, the warm friendly staff & service. They are going to be moving things around so that the dining area has its own section but I find this also quite fun & different. Great portions & very reasonable prices. They also do catering & will also take special (off menu) orders but best to call in advance to be sure they are prepared. Though reservations are not mandatory they have limited seating & it's best to be sure by reservation. If you are a Hungarian speaker - do feel comfortable to speak with the staff as they appreciate this very much. The menu is not wide, however, everything on the menu is awesome. They have a fruit & vegetable grocery at the front & fresh seafood & fish at the back. Fish variety if not wide but they are all top notch quality & fresh. I personally with to thank the staff & ownership for continuing the tradition of cooking Hungarian food to the Montreal populous as we need more restaurants like yours.
This place is amazing. Hands down one of the best Hungarian places to go around. The homey atmosphere & the piano with nice artwork & quick service. They even went out to get our favourite beers! Please try this place out & bring friends. They treat you like royalty.
What a great concept of the whole place! Besides that - GREAT food! Typical Austro-Hungarian cuisine, served in the most authentic way! Kaskaval pane was one of the best ones I have ever tried in my life! Compliments & greetings from Europe. Chapeau!
Excellent food prepared by a sweet cook making authentic Hungarian dishes! Eatery tucked into the back of a mainly Latino grocery store with plans to expand their Hungarian food offerings.
Delicious authentic Hungarian food in a cozy restaurant inside a small grocery. Everything we had was excellent, including the paprika chicken, rabbit, & chicken schnitzel.
Authentic Hungarian cuisine in a quaint restaurant smack in the middle of a grocery store! Interesting atmosphere to say the least.
