Edit: to the owners who actually questioned the validity of my review, instead of apologizing… you show arrogance… yes we did ask the waitress how much longer it would take & she obviously was wrong on the timing. As to tbe couple who wished us Good luck… YES REALLY.
We all figured lets just get this over with as we were not planning on ever going back.
Judging by some of the reviews you really should up your game & as to your service being so bad, & by your ARROGANT reply, I can certainly understand that you have no intention of improving. GOOD LUCK 🤯😡
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
We were 4 people & all disappointed from the whole experience. It started when a couple leaving the restaurant wished us'Good Luck' & we soon found out why… Although the restaurant has a charming warm atmosphere service was at a turtle pace & inadequate. The restaurant had only a few occupied tables, & it was slowwww! Drinks took over 40-45 minutes to arrive & I had to nudge, but they were at least, very good ( it's the only thing that was). We ordered Nacho appetizers they were also good but the shrimp & calamari were from a frozen box nothing Mexican about them…. Next! Afterwards it was a disaster ! We got there at 8:15 & our food arrived after 10 pm all 4 dishes were lukewarm & mediocre at best. Not at all what we expected, nothing Authentic about them. Don't bother going to this place there are much better Mexican restaurants in the city that won't waste your time & money. Sorry guys but you need to UP your game!
I was very excited to try this restaurant because the decor was beautiful & I'm a huge fan of authentic Mexican food, which is what I thought I was going to get. Instead, I got an extremely plain & simple'dish' with every part lacking seasoning. I ordered the Pescadilla which was advertised as a fried taco dish, I was expecting a nice saucy quesadilla with some cheese & vegetable toppings. But the dish itself was plain white fish inside plain corn tortillas. With plain lettuce thrown on top & a bit of white cheese. Even the sauce on the side was a plain tomato type sauce that didnt even have spice. I was very confused as I see no universe in which this can be called'authentic' mexican food.
My partner also ordered the Fajita which only came with 2 tortillas along with a skillet of fajita filling & some sides, the beans & rice sides literally had no salt on them, just plain black beans.
This was a very disappointing & confusing experience & although I expect the cocktails must be good/a selling point, I won't be coming back to try them.
EDIT: The dish I ordered- Pescadilla- is supposed to be fried tortillas & not saucy & cheesy like a quesadilla, which I fully understand as Im researching what the dish is'supposed' to look like so I realize I had different expectations.
However, what I recieved at this restaurant was still the most bland & plain version of this dish. From what Im seeing in pictures from elsewhere there is supposed to be some sort of vegetable slaw or SOMETHING inside other than just plain fish.
Trying to justify that what you served is exactly what this dish is meant to be just isn't right. I agree, mexican food isn't meant to be unnecessarily salty, BUT there must be some flavour, & what I ate at this restaurant was very bland.
The service was amazing; for the first time, I felt like the match Mexican service. The food was great & endless - I loved that.
I really loved it. The place was super comfortable, the buffet was very tasty, with a very varied menu & truly Mexican dishes, & the service was excellent as well. They were very kind & attentive. I definitely have to go back.
Service is very slow. Food is mid, I asked for my asada steak medium rare & it came to me basically like shoe rubber. Originally I wanted tacos & rice but they dont come with rice, so the waitress suggested this plate because she said I can'build my taco' but no it was basically a steak platter, no tortillas came with it. So I was a little disappointed because I really wanted tacos.
Not once did the waitress come to see if everything was okay with our food, I would have complained about my steak before hand but I couldn't. When we finished our plates, we waited a long time & we had to call her to get her to take our plates & ask for my dessert & bills. The tres leches cake was good though....
I am pleased that they didnt charge me for my plate, but Mexican food is my favorite & I was very disappointed.
Unfortunately I will not be returning to this restaurant again.
Finally, a Mexican restaurant in Montreal that goes beyond tacos & celebrates the traditional cuisine - beautifully executed, elaborate dishes like moles, molcajete, & chiles en nogada, the kind of food that is so hard to find done right.
The drink selection is solid mezcal offering & cocktails that go well beyond basic margaritas.
Service is outstanding: attentive, quick, offered in three languages.
The ambiance is the perfect balance of authentic Mexican vibe without trying too hard. No unnecessary sophistication, just genuinely flavorful, carefully prepared food served in a warm, inviting setting.
A place you come to enjoy real Mexican cuisine, not a simplified version of it.
Pros: Beautiful ambience & decor, good service, great selection of Mexican dishes some of which would be hard to find anywhere else.
Cons: It is of course the food why we came to this place. We really wanted to try Chile en nugada especially after reading the novel'Like Water for Chocolate'. & what a disappointment when it was served lukewarm. Asked the server & he said it was normal as they did not want us to burn ourselves. Yet the molcajete came extremely hot as expected! Also Chile en nugada came without pomegranate seeds which is a must in this recipe. Budget cuts?
& the molcajete mixte which costs $75 also speaks of budget cuts. It was missing the promised grilled cheese & nopales & had only a small quantity of beef, only 3 small tiger shrimps. It did have some cheap filler that looked like potato flautas.
Overall impression: mixed feelings, probably would not come back.
As a Mexican, discovering this place made me proud. From the decor to the service, everything reflects authentic Mexican culture. I went to brunch (must try ) with my partner & we were really happy to see our culture & gastronomy represented with such care & respect. Paisanos, let's support places like this!
As a Mexican I had great expectations about this brunch especially because I've been here for dinner 3 times.
Honestly this brunch does not worth 35CAD.
They basically offer you tacos dorados (fried tacos), enchiladas, pozole & eggs…
If this place is run by a Mexican they should know that they need desperately offer: fruit, juice, unlimited coffee, bread, & more options for food. There are plenty of options that could be offered apart from their very sad eggs.
I would recommend this place for dinner & nice drinks, but their brunch is basically made of tacos dorados & eggs. All other stuff are sides!
:( so sad our experience was this bad. I hope the owner can take a look at this & make sure local people get a real Mexican experience because our breakfasts/brunchs are much more than this.
El mejor restaurante MEXICANO de montreal
La gasteonomia mexicana como no hay otro como mexicano me siento orgulloso de que nos represente apoyemos a nuestros compatriotas que llevan el orgullo de México a otros países 🙌🙌🙌
If I could give extra credit stars I would. This restaurant deserves more than 5 stars. I am visiting a friend in Montreal from California. I never expected to experience fine Mexican cuisine. Casa Azul Montreal blew us away. The atmosphere is perfect for any occasion, but especially a date night I would say, it is incredible. Lots of space, amazing decor & indoor plants. My friend & I ordered: Tuetanos, Tamarind Margaritas, Limon Daiquiri, Passionfruit Mezcal drink, the Fried crispy tacos, & the enchiladas (mine pollo my friend's vegetarian). The staff were all friendly & attentive. The home made chili oil salsa was world class. I even got to meet the chef. He is humble & gracious & that man can cook. Words fall utterly short. You need to visit this restaurant if you want Mexican food in Montreal.
It is the closest experience to a real Mexican restaurant in Mexico. A completely worth it experience to share between family & friends. Precious deco. The pinatas of Frida & Diego at the entrance… mind blowing + the exceptional & attentive service of Chef Gonzalo.
An authentic Mexican experience the best we've had in our 9 years living in the area
A Must-Try!
We visited Casa Azul yesterday for my birthday & were truly impressed. It's a Mexican restaurant with a unique & refined twist, & I must say - the food was absolutely delicious!
The beef tacos were exquisite - packed with flavor & cooked to perfection. But what truly stole the show were the spicy margaritas - seriously, to die for!
What made the experience even more special was the outstanding customer service. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. Our waitress, who had short hair, was incredibly friendly, professional, & made us feel so welcome - it was honestly refreshing. The entire staff was helpful, attentive, & patient.
Bravo to the whole team!
I can't wait to go back - especially if there's live music or shows in the future.
Highly recommend this place - 100% worth a visit!
100% volveremos!
This vibrant Mexican restaurant is a hidden gem-perfect for a fun & memorable night out. The lively, colourful atmosphere set the right tone for the evening. The food was delicious, with authentic Mexican dishes prepared with care, & the cocktails were top-notch. The service was friendly & attentive, & the thoughtful décor & small touches really added to the experience. Special thanks to our waiter & to Fatima. We had a wonderful time & will definitely be back. Highly recommend!
Great spot! Visiting from Vancouver & looking for a great Mexican spot led us here. Pablo treated us exceptionally well & hooked us up with some in house punch. We had the Mole (Verde & Rojo) & both were excellent. The standout was the choriqueso fondue appetizer.
Between the atmosphere, the food & the service, it's hard to pick out what this place does best because everything has so much care & love put into it.
The place itself feels like Mexico, everything is decorated authentically & with love. Their menus tell the story of the inspiration behind the food & every inch of the place conveys culture, family & love.
The food was packed with flavor. Every bite is hand crafted to deliver a Mexican experience. The family behind this is clearly sharing their culture with intent & joy.
Pablo was an incredible server & took care of us with nice little attentions.
Overall it was an unforgettable experience that will keep us coming back. Thank you Pablo & the entire kitchen team at Casa Azul!
