Overall, Chez Fred is celebrated for consistently fresh bread and a wide range of pastries, with croissants and chocolatines repeatedly praised as some of the best in Montreal, though a few visitors report changes in quality and texture lately. The bakery is described as busy and popular, offering friendly service and reasonable prices, a cozy in store vibe for some and a quick grab and go atmosphere for others. While many describe reliable favorites like baguettes and other viennoiseries, occasional experiences include cold servings or mealy textures, and a small number of visits left customers disappointed with ingredients or execution.
This boulangerie is pure euro style bakery.
Everything is made from the perfect ingredient, cook to perfection & staff is wonderful. i live so closed by that around 2am at night i can smell their oven & the smell of baking is so tempting. so I go get lots of goods there: the madeleine are the best in town, the almond croissant decadent & irresistible. The bread is dense & savoury.
This boulangerie is always busy, which says a lot about the quality of their bread & pastries. Everything is consistently fresh & delicious, & the prices are very reasonable for what you get. The employees are always nice, welcoming, & efficient, even during busy hours.
If you're looking for a cozy café where you can sit & relax for a long time, this might not be the spot. While you can sit & enjoy your food, it's more of a grab-&-go kind of place.
Definitely come here if you're craving excellent pastries & bread-you won't be disappointed.

Edit #1:
I've been a loyal patron since I discovered it via Google. I have absolutely no complaints. Prices are more than reasonable given the quality of their product. I gift my neighbours & friends their wares, & they all are more than appreciative, lauding especially the chocolatins & croissants. I freeze all of what I personally consume, as I am a widower living alone. I've created a cheese & smoked back bacon breakfast croissant that is absolutely phenomenal. Six minutes from freezer to plate in a 425° oven. It's sinfully delicious. I have enjoyed many of their baguettes & breads, without disappointment. Freezing & rejuvenating them with a spray of water & a hot oven makes them return to their freshly baked state.
A café, well rated, recently opened in my neighbourhood. I decided to try a few of their baked wares. This morning I made my cheese/bacon concoction & it was disappointing. The croissant was large, but quite mealy & without any butter flavour. It was also more expensive. I should have known better.'If it ain't broke don't fix it.' The grass is definitely not greener on the other side. Other than relocating to Paris or Lyon, Chez Fred will earn my undying patronage forever.
After reading boulangerie Chez Fred reviews on Google, I thought I'd give it a try, as I would be in the neighborhood. I bought some croissants, choclatines, viennoiseres & bread to share with my friends. Croissants had a great flaky crust & a buttery, doughy & chewy consistency. Not quite the flaky, buttery layers of dough that I usually get in Paris, but equally enjoyable in another sense. The choclatine dough had similar qualities, & it compared quite favorably to another of my favorite Montréal bakeries. I gave away all the rest, so I'll have to await feedback from the recipients. So far, I'm impressed & will likely be spoiling some more friends with treats in which they wouldn't otherwise indulge.
Amazing bread & pastries. Their Galette des Rois was fantastic, although seasonal. The service is great as well, efficient & always under control, even in rush!

Chez Fred used to have the best pastries in Montréal without a doubt. Now, like many other similar places, it's hit or miss. Croissants & chocolatines can be bready & dry. An almond croissant was hard. The service was never great but the quality of the product made up for it.
I've passed by Chez Fred many times & finally decided to try them out; wish I would've tried them sooner! Great sourdough bread! & we lived the croissant breakfast sandwich. The place has a nice & calm atmosphere & truly focuses on the art of breadmaking.
Une boulangerie avec des pains & des viennoiseries excellentes à des prix abordables. It attracts a steady stream of people & some might stay to talk over coffee. No fancy decor instead local art is displayed. The youth learns to make bread & deliver polite service. I find this place enchanting & a breath of fresh air. Swing by grab a pastry & spend a little time soaking in the energy. A soothing experience.
Great bakery for all your needs. Croissants (several flavors), baguettes, breads including sourdough. Their ready made sandwiches are also fresh & tasty. I had the breakfast sandwich, hala bread, regular & chocolate croissants. Just the aroma as you enter makes you wanna buy everything on the menu.
Great croissants. Good breads. Overpriced pastries. Some good servers, but the rotation is so constant that you are always with someone who is training & there is a long line-up. But it's usually worth it & it will move moderately fast. Very strange opening & closing times. Always schedules keep changing. Watch for new ones on the door.
