Reviews describe Boulangerie Chez Fred as a standout for croissants, choclatines and other viennoiseries, with many calling the croissants among the best in Montreal and praising flaky, buttery textures, while prices are noted as reasonable for the quality. The bakery is consistently busy with fresh pastries and good bread, and staff are frequently described as friendly and efficient, though the space leans more toward grab-and-go than a long sit-down cafe. Some reviews mention occasional declines in texture or flavor and changes in ingredients, and a few disappointments such as a sour coffee or mealy croissants when not freshly baked, and almond croissants that run out, yet several commenters emphasize the value and reliability for pastries, baguettes and desserts, with many considering it a must-visit.
Always fresh & yummy! Not a huge selection. They obviously focus & freshness & quality over quantity. Their croissants are to die for. They often run out later in the day.
Seriously one of the best croissants & chocolatines in Montreal. I've been coming here for croissants & chocolatines since it opened almost 15 years ago.
Across the years, the size of the viennoiseries decreased due to shrinklation. They used to be huge! However, at least the taste is still the same.
It's a taste of comfort & home to me. Would highly recommend to those who like butter croissants! Thank you for all those years!
Their sandwiches, chouquettes & burger buns are also solid.
Edit #1:
I've been a loyal patron since I discovered it via Google. I have absolutely no complaints. Prices are more than reasonable given the quality of their product. I gift my neighbours & friends their wares, & they all are more than appreciative, lauding especially the chocolatins & croissants. I freeze all of what I personally consume, as I am a widower living alone. I've created a cheese & smoked back bacon breakfast croissant that is absolutely phenomenal. Six minutes from freezer to plate in a 425° oven. It's sinfully delicious. I have enjoyed many of their baguettes & breads, without disappointment. Freezing & rejuvenating them with a spray of water & a hot oven makes them return to their freshly baked state.
A café, well rated, recently opened in my neighbourhood. I decided to try a few of their baked wares. This morning I made my cheese/bacon concoction & it was disappointing. The croissant was large, but quite mealy & without any butter flavour. It was also more expensive. I should have known better.'If it ain't broke don't fix it.' The grass is definitely not greener on the other side. Other than relocating to Paris or Lyon, Chez Fred will earn my undying patronage forever.
After reading boulangerie Chez Fred reviews on Google, I thought I'd give it a try, as I would be in the neighborhood. I bought some croissants, choclatines, viennoiseres & bread to share with my friends. Croissants had a great flaky crust & a buttery, doughy & chewy consistency. Not quite the flaky, buttery layers of dough that I usually get in Paris, but equally enjoyable in another sense. The choclatine dough had similar qualities, & it compared quite favorably to another of my favorite Montréal bakeries. I gave away all the rest, so I'll have to await feedback from the recipients. So far, I'm impressed & will likely be spoiling some more friends with treats in which they wouldn't otherwise indulge.
Véritables croissants au BEURRE. Les croissants (comme les chocolatines) sont gros, la pâte est très feuilletée & craquante, vous laisserez des miettes partout. 😇
Pour moi, ce sont les meilleurs croissants à Montréal.

They ran out of their apparently popular almond croissants, but their plain ones are quite good. The simple egg & cheese sandwich was the best! Chou options were alright
Decided to try out the local places in the neighborhood & found this one. I liked the environment & the service, however the croissant & the latte I had were disappointing. I probably did not get a croissant from a fresh batch so I will have to come back another time since it was a bit dry
I always pass by chez Fred but never stopped there, after reading some great reviews, I gave it a try, i had butter croissant & chocolatine & I must say that it is very average.

Best boulangerie in the neighbourhood. Their baguettes are excellent, crusty & chewy. Best croissants. & very fairly priced. Top quality. Very nice service as well.
Les sandwiches au poulet avec la complotée d'oignons sont très bons (la baguette est une véritable baguette comme on les fait en France). Les croissants aux amandes aussi 😍 Je recommande chaudement cette boulangerie !
Chez Fred used to have the best pastries in Montréal without a doubt. Now, like many other similar places, it's hit or miss. Croissants & chocolatines can be bready & dry. An almond croissant was hard. The service was never great but the quality of the product made up for it.
