Review Summary

Reviews portray Au Pied de Cochon as a landmark Montreal experience that combines indulgent Quebecois cuisine with a festive open kitchen atmosphere. The menu centers on rich, hearty dishes like the famous Duck in a Can, foie gras poutine, and other duck and pork specialties, with many diners calling the food decadent, flavorful, and unforgettable, though sometimes heavy. Service is repeatedly praised as attentive, knowledgeable, and warm, with several reviewers highlighting memorable staff, while a few notes mention slow pacing or occasional missteps during busy periods. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially for bar seating or peak times, and the restaurant is often described as lively, bustling, and loud but welcoming, sometimes feeling like a culinary show. Overall, Au Pied de Cochon is celebrated as a must-visit Montreal institution, worth the splurge for bold flavors and a unique immersive dining spectacle; some readers suggest it may not suit those seeking lighter fare or quiet dining.

We could only book the one bar seating left at 10PM on a Wednesday right after Holiday. There were quite a bit of empty seats when we arrived so me & my husband could be seated on a table. We snacked for dinner earlier already because the reservation was late at night. My husband wanted to order the beef tripes but was sold out. Dessert options of the day were not interested at all for me. My husband is allergic to alcohol & I am pregnant so we cannot drink. We ended up only getting couple of appetizers for a late night snack which were the duck temaki & foie gras nigiri. They were delicious & unique but the price value were not good. Paid $60 for just 6 bites. Glad that we finally tried the restaurant but probably won't go back. Would like to visit again for the two appetizers though if the price is better.

I haven't been here since before COVID, & it was very good to be back. The food & service is still top notch, with a very good wine list to choose from. The dishes are rich, eclectic & truly delicious. A wonderful experience!

A great restaurant all around. The foie gras pancakes & poutine are a must. Main courses were a little disappointing, though.

Terrifc in every way. Staff went out of their way after a parking issue almost derailed the evening. Cocktails, food, wine--everything was great. Can't wait to return

This is my second time eating here. It was as amazing as I remembered it. I had the Foie Gras Terrine with truffled maple butter which was one of the most decadent dishes I have ever eaten. A must visit when you are in Montreal!

This place NEVER disappoints, a true Montreal institution for fine dining. Fresh ingredients, bold flavours, everything house made, you can't get better than that. We enjoyed the seafood platter & the yellowfin tuna that was caught in Nova Scotia that same afternoon. Highly recommend & will be back again soon as usual!

An amazing experience all around with incredible food & service. Getting a reservation is highly recommended for a seamless dining experience but once you're seated, the staff is courteous & knowledgeable & the menu fantastic. Prepare for the opposite of a'light meal' with foie gras everything.

The food was good, but not great. They rely a lot on luxury goods - but we preferred the dishes that highlighted the cooking technique. Offering a 10 pound (50 year old) lobster is just conspicuous consumption & was a real turn off. The space is also very loud. I'd suggest finding something a little less'hot' & more tasty.

Be ready for a very rich & heavy food experience. Personally, I can't handle that much foie gras but it was delicious. We went during the summer & the place was very warm. Water did not have any ice. The duck in a can was great & a cool experience. The pigs foot was very good & quite a sizeable dish. Unfortunately, it took about 40 min for us to get our order in but we were ok just enjoying the vibe.

The experience was above what we expected. The service was just awesome. The food was almost perfect, especially the entrée.

Clearly worth trying multiple times.

Amazing food & experience the food was delicius & staff were great. Everything is very much made for sharing. The Appetizer menu is my favourite be prepared for really rich decadent food! My only critique would be that the drinks were a pretty bland. The Moscow mule was delicious but the ciders & whiskey sour were only ok. It's also a bit of a cramped space so be prepared to be a little squished in.

I went in with mixed expectations, as I know that the border between indulgent QC fare & tourist trap can be muddled. I am so happy with what we got. An attentive but not overbearing service & dishes mostly on the memorable side. Highlights: foie gras terrine to moan for, great duck tartare, & all the mains: great halibut, otrageous & delicious stuffed pig hoof (a beast of a dish) & delicious pork sirloin. Great use of seasonal mushrooms. Desserts were moreish even after the generous portions of the pork mains.
Less impressive: the foie gras nigiri was taken over by the ponzu sauce, & the razor clams were not uniform in cooking but eh, still nice.
Recommended for whoever is looking for Quebecoise indulgence as advertised by that Bourdain documentary. I am sure there are other venues that provide it, but this one is accessible & its reputation is justified. Stick to seafood if fat turns you off.
