Service was hyper attentive yet the kitchen was extremely slow. We ordered the Cod Fritters as an appetizer, which came after about 25 Minutes. They were a delightful little snack & helped pace our appetite as I had ordered the fabled "duck in a can" which we were warned would take 30-40 minutes to prepare. It instead arrived after about an hour & 10 minutes, alongside my partners warm salad of cod cheeks. Her salad replaced the "quenelle" item on the menu that has advertised scallops & cod. The salad was enjoyable but unimaginative & limited. My duck arrived & then was quickly plated atop a piece of toast & sunchocke purée. The particular portion of duck I was presented was so fatty, there was about a 2cm x 6cm piece of chewy, rubbery duck fat that I simply couldn't cut with a knife left alone eat. Tucked under that & spewing out across the plate were confit mirepoix & a large gelatinous portion of foie, which I understand is the center piece of the restaurant but felt heavy & egregious next to my inedible fat. The dish was so fatty that as our waiter attempted to lift the can from the table, it slipped out of his hands & clattered around before he finally regained control over it. We ordered dessert which arrived painfully slowly as well, chocolate lava cake & crème brûlée were simple & satisfying, albeit unoriginal & lazy. Our dining experience was just short of two & a half hours long by the time we had payed the check. Au Pied de Cochon is a restaurant in love with dreams of old world French cuisine without the vibrancy, passion, & execution of the cuisine it imitates.
Loved everything; the foie gras nigiri were little wonders, & the duck in a can was insane, beautiful, & beyond delicious. Great wine selection as well, & perfect service. I come here every time I'm in Montreal, & will keep coming back.
This was my second time attending the restaurant & it did not hit as much as the first time. The duck temaki was fabulous, foie gras Poutine to die for, but the duck in a can was very chewy, different from the first time I had it. The service was great but the environment when you're in the front of the restaurant is not ideal. We were next to the line of people waiting, next to the coat rack & there were cold breezes throughout our meal. I would still definitely recommend going but try & get a table in the restaurant & not the entrance.
Les chefs sont experts dans la préparation de plats à base de canard ! / The chefs are experts in preparing dishes with duck!
An excellent meal from start to finish. I highly recommend the fois gras nigiri & the duck in a can.
Food was tasty but way too greasy for us! The bread was burnt in duck in the can dish & not able to eat, the waitress told us is normal. End it up just take it away.
A classic Montreal staple. Indulge in all the foie gras. Experience classic French techniques in ways you don't often see, like Duck in a Can. You will leave very satisfied & full of goodness.
It was ok my wife loved her mac & cheese with foie gras, but my canard en conserve was rare (nice) but the the partial breast was not seared so the skin was rubbery & the thick fat layer left a huge pool of grease in the bowl & still a thick layer of fat on the duck. The foie gras still had a large piece of inedible arterie running through it. Considering a 225$C bill (including tax & tip) for service that ignored us didn't check back for drink orders other than the soda water with lemon to clear the grease from my mouth or the dessert order my wife wanted I wouldn't come here again
This place was amazing food wise & service wise. I had originally booked the paris location by accident weeks in advance & when I explained the situation to them they got me a good reservation !
The duck in a can & poutine were amazing & the fois Gras tastes so good. My fam thought it was goose :) I also really liked how well versed the waiters were with the food & were very well versed in explaining what the dishes were made of
I also really liked the hostess Mia - she was super friendly & went above & beyond to ensure we had a comfortable time. She also offered to help us bring home the can that had the duck in it & explained how it would be a great souvenir. She is seriously one of the best hostesses I've had ever!
Plogue a Champlain, Duck in Can, Seat a bar watching kitchen... heaven.
We are definitely glad we took the opportunity to dine at Au Pied de Cochon. The service was fantastic, but the food is the star. Between the three of us we shared the duck in a can & the foie gras & bacon mac & cheese, a few glasses of wine, & maple pudding chomeur for dessert.
It should not be taken as criticism, but the chef definitely prioritizes preparation, quality ingredients & flavour over presentation. Well done!
The food here was delicious. We had cod fritters & rice paper roll for appetizers & then duck in a can & the burger followed by the pudding. All were very very good. The only drawback was the food came out a little slow (all the staff were very attentive) & there was a bit of a chill from the front door where we were sitting.
This was an incredible dining experience & a great introduction to Montreal. Get the duck in a can - unlike anything I ever tried before!
Lives up to its reputation. Poutine with Foie Gras, duck in a can, shepherds pie all excellent. Service was great.
Appetizers were the stars of the meal as well as the cocktails. Entrees a major disappointment. Pigs head served in pool
of oil that cascaded off the table. Advised by our waiter that it was insufficient for three so ordered another entree the duck in a can. Pigs head was enough for a party of 4-6 as we were told by another waiter at the end of the meal. Deep fried right before service made it far too greasy & not enjoyable. The duck in the can was sinewy & not the delight it promised.
Atmosphere & service were wonderful so would definitely return & maybe think lighter fare.
Wonderful evening. The food was fantastic - the duck in a can was especially delicious. Our server was extremely friendly & helpful. Would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Montreal.
Outstanding meal combined with attentive & engaging staff waitstaff. The Plogue a Champlain appetizer was a layered, melt-in-your-mouth, fantastic dish. For an entree I went with the burger. My thought was "this is likely to be the best burger I'll ever have." It was. The meat was a combination of duck & pork, then a generous layer of foei gras, brioche roll, & a rich, savory sauce. You'll need a knife & fork but it may the best burger you've ever had!
Started off great with a salad, unfortunately the cod frites apps were over fried, hard & greasy. Fois Gras poutine curds were cold! The Duck in a Can is a great "foodie" idea, however on a busy night its too popular & was cold as it came out of the can. We love duck & fois gras so the cold parts dampened the experience. Great restaurant with a fun vibe , open kitchen with a hard working crew. Would give it another chance & choose different items from menu.
Great food in a busy place. Had the duck tartare & duck in the can. Very good service.
Way too slow on putting on dishes. Ordered Foie Gras Nigiri, Duck in the Can & other Foie Gras dish, with two cups of wine. It took more than 1.5 to delivery the dishes.
Friends had raved about their dining experience. I thought the food was just adequate. We had the duck in a can because we felt, well- we were there for that. I thought it was just ok. The salad was the standout & the wine choice. Our waiter was great though! I would easily pass up this experience for another in Montreal.
Great food & great service. The duck in a can is absolutely delicious! Highly recommended!
Always drop by Au Pied de Cochon when I am in Montreal. The food is good overall. Part of the Duck breast of the Duck in the can is tough. A pity for such a signature dish. The Air Conditioning was not working when we were there, that really affect our enjoyment of the meal as you can imagined.
The food was excellent & service was very nice but our duck in a can diner which was magnificent when it finally arrived was forever delayed. Clearly the waitstaff forgot about us for an extended time as when finally someone stopped to ask us if we needed anything we reminded them that our dinner had never been served.
We had to wait for an hour even though we had a reservation made & they ran out of quite a few dishes by the time we sat down. We were a bit disappointed at first but the waitress was very apologetic & recommended a very good wine which was not on the menu. She also recommended the duck in a can but we later changed to the pig head & the lobster (only available sometimes). Our party of 4 loved all the dishes that we had ordered. We could not finished the pig head as it was very large & it was quite late by the time it arrived. I would definitely come again next time I visit Montreal.
I would put 1 star but Libro wouldn't publish the review. The lowest you can give it is 3 stars.
Absolutely terrible service. The service at a 2am hole in the wall Chinese restaurant was 10x better. There's so many good restaurants in this city, don't even bother. The food was good but nothing special but the service, that was something to remember.
We had a reservation for 10. When we showed up the hostess let us know that the table was running late & they could sit us at the bar while we waited for the table. No problem. We sat at the bar without service for 10 minutes. When they did come, we asked for a beer & water. The water never came. While sitting there & chatting, the table behind us continued to flag the server asking where there dessert was, they were visibly upset at how poor the service was. This would eventually be our table. When we were finally seated they took our order. The Duck Temaki came out relatively quick & was tasty. & then we waited.. & waited, some bread & butter showed up at the table with no explanation (we didn't order it), over an hour later the manager came by & apologized for the long wait & said that the food should be coming out in 5min & wanted to confirm it's the duck in the can & the lobster roll. We had to correct her that it was the duck breast & not the duck in the can. We waited another 10 min. They offered us free dessert for the delay. We didn't end up taking it. We were exhausted & fed up with the service & want it to end. However, it took forever to get our bill.
Haven't been in here since 2007 & am happy that APDC still lives up to my memories / expectations. WIne list is still a mile deep & the menu has all my old favorites & some new things that were amazing. Spectacular service from friendly & professional people. The grilled whelks were amazing, as was the duck with morels, asparagus gribiche & the foie gras terrine. Ordered the roasted pigs head for the sheer spectacle & enjoyed deconstructing & attempting to finish it. I'm so happy that eating here is still a blast. I woke up this morning thinking about the whelks.
Fois gras poutine amazing, pork chop very good, duck in a can- some what disappointing. My duck was extremely tough & very hard to cut, the fat didn't seem rendered enough & the fois gras was very gelatinous. The flavors were amazing, unfortunately it just didn't seem like it was cooked long enough. Service was good until our waitresses switched mid shift then everything became very slow & we felt forgotten.
Everything from the Duck Tamaki, the fois gras poutine to the Duck in a Can was exquisite. The service was exceptionally personable & knowledgeable. The kitchen staff were charismatic & more than willingly shared banter with us. The décor was chic but not uptight. Even the other customers were fun to sit near & we enjoyed great conversations.
A must if you are anywhere near the area, & if you live in Montréal, get yourself there asap.
Nigiri was amazing. Really nice balance, & the creaminess of the bite carried through. The duck in a can however, duck was rubbery & was only supplied a butter knife. Had to ask for a real knife halfway through.
