As for the chef special for example the half plate jerk chicken size portion way too small needs more rice needs more chicken especially for the price that we're paying. As for the drinks Dark & Stormy there needs to be more consistency the first drink was perfect the second drink was water down not strong enough.
Everything was amazing! The service was excellent, food is top-tier (some of my faves: jerk chicken, mac n cheese, oxtail tacos) & the drinks are delicious. Nice vibe & music too. Highly recommend for birthday parties, date nights or girls night out. 10 on 10.
I've been to Tropikal twice & I have mixed feelings. The food, drinks, atmosphere & music are great. But the service is why this is a 3 star review & not a 5 star. I even think 3 stars is generous to be honest.
The first time I went to Tropikal in a large group for a birthday. This reservation had been made about two weeks prior. We arrived at 9pm & the hostess was extremely rude, telling us that we had to leave at the latest by 11pm. We had planned on having dinner & drinks & had no intention of leaving that early, & we had not been told this beforehand upon making the reservation. According to the hostess, the restaurant had made it onto some online list of popular/hot restaurants in the area, & that was her reasoning for telling us we had a set time to leave at... um, excuse me? We were a massive group of paying customers & we haven't even been seated yet - & we have to change our plans because now Tropikal is *exclusive* & needs to turn over tables quicker? How is that okay We argued because it was completely unreasonable for them to ask this of us. We were about 12-14 people & we would not have gone to Tropikal had we been told this beforehand. They ended up permitting us to stay later, & we managed to have a good time in spite of the situation. The food, drinks, music & our server were all lovely, but the situation poisoned the evening for me.
I decided to give Tropikal a second chance & made a reservation for myself & one other person. Again, we get there & somehow my reservation doesn't exist & the hostess gives us attitude when tell her that we did, in fact, have a reservation... we were begrudgingly given a table. Food & drinks were great, but come on...
It's a shame because it's a really nice place but the attitude of superiority was just intolerable. I won't be going back to this so-called *exclusive* place. Making it on some list doesn't mean you can just treat people like it's a privilege for them to be given a table.
In general, we had a good experience. They have very good cocktails but a bit on the expensive side for the quantity. The best drink, in my opinion, is Rosa Parks. Unfortunately, we were a bit disappointed because the menu on the website was not the same in the restaurant. People in my party came far for the menu on the website. The mac & cheese, the poutine & the plantain cups were really delicious & remind us of the Caribbean. The oxtail tacos, the fried lobster tail & shrimps lack a lot of flavours. They did not have their usual churros dessert made with plantain so we took the traditional churros which were very salty & drenched in sugar. The service could be more effective. One of the servers came & ask us what we were waiting for, we told him the churros. He said he will be back. He passed 2-3 time our table without given us an answer.
