The restaurant has potential, but I wouldn't recommend it. Small details matter; the music was far too loud, especially considering the restaurant was nearly empty. The cocktails were standard, & they managed to mess up the classic margarita. The decor feels outdated & cheap. While the downstairs area was decent, it lacked a distinct vibe typical of a basement.

As for the food, it was average overall, though the jerk was quite good.View more

My recent visit to Tropikal was marred by a lack of preparation & subpar service. Attending an event night for sip & paint, we encountered numerous issues from the start. Mind you I often go there & it use to get realy great service from Ben & Kenny. The quality of aervice really dropped & it shows. Despite arriving promptly at 9 pm, the music was excessively loud, making conversation impossible. Requests to lower the volume were unfulfilled, & the bartender's inability to make classic cocktails, like a martini, was disappointing. Food orders were incomplete, with missing items like rice, & cocktails arrived over an hour late. Attempts to get assistance from our waitress or settle the bill were futile. Yes, I still paid full price for half the plate ordered. It was evident that the entire floor staff were newbies, lacking the experience to handle a busy event night. The blame placed on me for expressing my frustration was unwarranted. Apparently I "discouraged" the new hirees. Tropikal's failure to prepare for the challenges of a busy night left us dissatisfied. I advise others to temper their expectations when dining here, as the lack of readiness & customer-centric approach may lead to disappointment.View more

Came here for dinner, the music, atmosphere & food are absolutely immaculate. Highly recommend coming here with a group of friends! The cocktails are pricey (mostly around 20$) but I enjoyed mine (blacker the berry). We got the coconut shrimp as an appetizer & the seasonal Trinidadian Roti Platter to share & it was more than enough! So tasty & delicious, but just a warning for some, it is spicy like advertised!View more

The ambience & service is spot on. You want to stay, & groove to their (fire) sound track. The main dishes (griot) & sides (mac n cheese) were delicious, mouth watering & uniquely seasoned. These are your favourite dishes levelled up. Where this place lost a point was with their cocktails (especially their signature punch) which was overwrought with bitters. Will we return? Notre serveur a été un amour! Je ne me souviens pas de son nom, mais il vient du Chili! Le préposé à l'eau était super aussi, on a jamais manqué de rien! Cocktails incroyables!

Super belle découverte! Le restaurant était plutôt désert lors de notre passage (un jeudi soir). Magnifique carte de cocktails! Nous avons essayé le Tropical Berry & le Henrick: superbes!! Le menu est court, mais contient de belles découvertes. On retient sur notre liste de restaurants à partager avec notre entourage. Merci!

Nous avons passé un agréable vendredi! S'assurer de toujours venir à l'heure pour éviter des incompréhensions inutiles.
Le gérant est d'une oreille attentive & le barmaid a été très sympa avec nous. Un service de qualité, la queue de boeuf est excellente, le cabri idem, les cocktails sont frais & l'ambiance est bonne.
Nous testerons définitivement celui d'Ottawa! Bon succès à toute l'équipe!

I went there with my husband last night & we had a fantastic experience. We sat at the bar & we tried different cocktails. You can literally pick any cocktail from the menu & you will be wonderfully surprised with the unique tastes. Our favorites were Éwé, Fré & the rum punch.
The food is out of this world. We tried the coconut shrimps, which was a bit spicy, but nonetheless delicious. Then We tried the fish with the rice & we ended with the cheese dip. The bar stuff were so attentive & truly made our experience unforgettable. All in all it was wonderful. We will definitely go back. Recommend 10/10

Food to salty, cocktails too sweet, plantains too soggy & overripe. Asked for a birthday dessert for other guest, by email & in person - never arrived. Birthday girl had to send her main meal back, no apology.

Nous avons appréciés notre expérience globale au Tropikal mais restons déçus sur certains points :
- Nous avons été mis au bar alors que le restaurant était vide. Je précise aussi qu'au moins 7 ou 8 tables sont restées vides tout le long de notre présence & que nous aurions donc largement pu bénéficier d'une table. Le bar, lui, était pleins, les dernières places qu'il restés étaient en face du barman (très sympathique au passage) mais emplacement très bruyant & peu intimiste pour une soirée en amoureux, réservée en ligne depuis plus d'une semaine. C'est apparemment la règle pour les réservations de 2... Mais pourquoi ne pas le notifier lors de la réservation ? 2 couples ont été ensuite placés à des tables après notre arrivée... Un peu frustrant je dois dire.
- A peine assis, la serveuse nous dit que nous avons 2h devant nous... Ok mais peu apprécié de l'entendre.
- Le serveur qui nous a servi à manger n'avez pas l'air très heureux d'être ici..

Points positifs :
Le lieux, le barman (très bon cocktails), la bouffe mérite un 4*.

J'espère que cet avis aidera à L'amélioration du service.

We went out for date night, dining & cocktails. It wasn't the first time. I personally love it for the well mannered staff throughout, our barkeep/entertainer Kodjo delivered in all the ways that matters; from his flare to his warm presence, he made sure we were embracing the full experience .. we left completely fulfilled. He even kept'em coming, with perfect timing👌🏾 the food always so amazing!! No matter what you eat, your eyes will roll back! I most definitely recommend this place to anyone who enjoys a flavourful meal, in a place that delivers plenty on ambiance, beautiful staff always smiling, there is even a room for your parties (book by phone or online/reserve) & you know Chef Jae Anthony is incomparable when it comes to taste 🫡 Tropikal is an amazing supper club that I CANNOT wait to go back to!

Très emballées à notre arrivée par ce resto à l'ambiance sympathique. Repas succulents. Par contre, le plaisir fut gâché à la fin. Pas de dessert ou de digestif. De plus, nous avons été forcées de partir, sous prétexte que d'autres clients attendaient. Pourtant, nous n'avons pas consommer que des cocktails (vin, entrées, cocktails, repas). Nous voulions passer un moment agréable, mais qui s'est terminée en queue de poisson à 21h. Donc, cela a complètement laissé un arrière-goût de ne pas revenir. Quel dommage!

Service extrement lent. Nourriture & cocktail tres bon. 1h pour les cocktails. & 10 à 15 minutes dattente avant que tous les repas soient servis. Quand nous avons commence a manger, tout etait froid. Ils ont gardé la porte patio ouverte & ils faisaient froid, a plusieurs reprises nous avons demandé de les fermer, maia sans succes. Je n'y retournerais pas.

Wow, belle ambiance & un délice pour les papilles. Je recommande de commander plusieurs choses & de partager pour goûter à plusieurs plats. Je recommande le mac&cheese, les croquettes de morue, les ailes de poulet jerk & la trempette au calalou (WoW que c'est délicieux). Les cocktails tropikal passion & bon bacay sont très bons. La seule chose, j'avais réservé & nous avons la table pour deux heures seulement, j'aurais souhaité plus longtemps pour profiter de l'ambiance !

Très bonne place, le personnel est très gentil, souriant & sympathique !
Nous avons eu un problème avec un plat qui était trop épicé pour l'une d'entre nous, ils nous ont changé ça en étant compréhensif & c'est vraiment apprécié !
Bonne musique old school comme on aime, & très bonne nourriture & cocktail !

In general, we had a good experience. They have very good cocktails but a bit on the expensive side for the quantity. The best drink, in my opinion, is Rosa Parks. Unfortunately, we were a bit disappointed because the menu on the website was not the same in the restaurant. People in my party came far for the menu on the website. The mac & cheese, the poutine & the plantain cups were really delicious & remind us of the Caribbean. The oxtail tacos, the fried lobster tail & shrimps lack a lot of flavours. They did not have their usual churros dessert made with plantain so we took the traditional churros which were very salty & drenched in sugar. The service could be more effective. One of the servers came & ask us what we were waiting for, we told him the churros. He said he will be back. He passed 2-3 time our table without given us an answer.
