I was walking by this restaurant one evening & I decided to stop & look at the menu. The restaurant had some photos of some of the dishes in their front window display. As i looked at them I said « Mmm, that looks good . » A voice behind me said « You won't know until you've come in & tried the food. » I turned & I saw someone relaxing, obviously at the end of a shift. It was the Chef, Galaxy. I asked him if the crab & pork soup was good. He said you'll have to try it to know. I said that i usually ate at Pho Tay Ho & was the food comparable to them? He said to come for lunch tomorrow & be the judge! So I did. My wife & I got the chicken wings, the eggplant & tofu & a Ca Phe. The food was simply excellent. We will go back soon! Bravo chef.
1) Food:
The dishes looked great in their ads & on social media, so I was very excited (they also ran *a lot* of ads). However, most items fell short. The only standout was bánh tôm (the shrimp fritters) which I enjoyed. Bò né (the steak & egg skillet) had too much soy sauce which overwhelmed the beef & pâté. The bánh bao was more Chinese bao bun style than actual Vietnamese bánh bao, & the filling was below average - definitely my least favorite. G?i gà (the chicken salad) was also average & forgettable.
Portions were small for the price, so we didn't bother ordering more & just went to Tay Ho restaurant nearby afterward for a fuller, actually delicious, & cheaper meal.
2) Service:
Also disappointing. After our food arrived, we held off eating to wait for our friend, which was 15 minutes in total (I took photos & have timestamps). 2 minutes before our friend came, at 6 PM, our server came over & asked,'Are you guys gonna eat that? We have tables after you.' This felt unnecessary & uncomfortable, especially since we were already worried sick if our friend was safe or not because of this unusual delay.
For context, I'd called the day before & were aware they had rsvps starting from 7 PM, so this interaction at 6 felt rushed & somewhat icky. Then we checked with another server & were told we had a 1.5-hour seating window, which made the other person's question even more unreasonable. We finished everything at 6:19 PM, which was approximately an hour of the total seating.
After reading all the other comments, I have a feeling we're all referring to the same waitress. If that's right then I hope they would take some actions to manage this issue, like better training or something.
3) Seating:
The setup was awkward & impractical. I understand Tô Dinette Viet wants to recreate a Vietnamese street food aesthetic with their furniture choices, but the execution misses the mark & inauthentic. Low plastic tables are typically paired with short stools (see my 2nd photo), & taller chairs go with even higher metal tables (photo #3), not whatever they do. This mismatch made it uncomfortable to eat & could be especially difficult for older customers.
Overall: 1/5 experience.
The food was so flavourful! The place is very cute. The only negative thing is I would say that the chair (little red stools) are not very confy…
We ordered & then were ignored for over an hour - no drinks, food or check in. When I asked if prep had started as otherwise we would just leave (it was closing time) we got our juice & were reassured food was being plated. The food came another ten minutes later & the beef soup was very oily & not flavorful. The beef sandwich with egg was okay (didn't come with any toppings & you assemble yourself). They offered free imperial rolls which were good. The small plastic stools were hard to sit at for that kind of wait. This is a trendy looking spot but they probably forgot to put in the order & don't seem to actually care about your experience.
Went based on the good reviews, but food was below average. Not a lot of flavour, didn't do justice to otherwise fantastic Vietnamese cuisine.
This place was amazing! Everything was delicious & seemed to be crafted with a lot of care & attention. The staff were extremely friendly & attentive. We had the grilled pork shoulder, grilled tofu, & the shrimp & yam donuts & everything tasted incredible. Highly recommend!
Food is sensational & super affordable given the quality & freshness of everything. The whole team is incredible & fun to be around. Super accessible from metro (5 minutes walk from Beaubien).
Thank you to the whole team!!! See you soon!
NOTE*** It's best to reserve, even on weekdays!!
Les serveurs étaient super duoer gentils. On n'a pas d'habitude de manger sur une table si basse, ils nous ont aidé à changer une autre sans attente trop longue.
Les plats sont bons mais ils ont déjà ajustés donc ce n'est pas très authentique.
This restaurant went viral on social media so we decided to give it a try on my search for Vietnamese food- the snack menu was what piqued my interest as opposed to a regular pho restaurant.
A fair bit of seating inside- both normal tables & smaller tables that mimicked seating at food stalls in Vietnam.
Food wise- menu is definitely smaller but dishes were well prepared. We ordered the chicken salad, wings, shrimp fritters & a mango margarita. Everything was great, service was quick & efficient. Prices were also very fair.
They've only been open for two months but good to see a local place like this have success!
Staff/waiters were accommodating after asking us to switch place for a group of 3. Comped out drinks which was very appreciated.
Food taste great & met expectations in terms of ratio quality/price.
Mango Margarita was top notch.
Also: Service dans les deux langues officielles.
I wish their business success & long life, great spot on st-hubert bound to gain in popularity.
I find it bizarre that they pushed any walk-ins to the low table setup despite there were many empty'standard' table without reservation. My logic is this: I pay the same money & eat the same food, just because I had two people so I could not sit at the comfortable setup for 4 people to enjoy the same food? The low table is not comfortable to eat at all, they should just get rid of it & use normal height table & chairs, or pair the low tables with low chairs.
For the food: fried food was good. The signsture Bo Ne did not live up to my expectation due to the quality of the beef. They clearly use cheap cut that is not suitable for steak/stir-fry. My Bo Ne was unchewable & salty... at least the patê was very good.
Hope they will get rid of the low table & use a better cut of beef.
Espace restreint, musique peu appropriée & trop forte. Bières asiatiques & vins disponibles. On y va pour les saveurs inoubliables..
Tô Dinette Viet truly served one of the best Vietnamese meals I've had in Montréal. One of the things I liked most was how clean & clear the flavours were. There are no unnecessarily heavy sauces everything is simple but very impactful. You can really feel the quality of the ingredients. The place is small, but very warm & welcoming, with a real neighbourhood'hidden gem' vibe. The service was also quick & friendly, making you feel comfortable right away.
Came here with my friends for dinner. The vibes were great. We stream on twitch & they were okay with use streaming (make sure you ask before as always). The food was amazing. Very authentic viet food, we enjoyed everything we ordered. The staff was very attentive & lovely. Probably one of the best services I've received on the island. Highly recommend you check this restaurant out.
