Tô Dinette Viet truly serves hole in the wall vibes. I have not been back to Montreal in over 11 years, so for this trip it was truly special to commemorate a personal moment for the family & to be able to celebrate with the Tô Dinette Viet team just set the bar for our return to Montreal.
The Banh Thom (Crispy Shrimp with Sweet Potato) is deconstructed, so it's to be wrapped in lettuce & herbs to dip with the fish sauce (nuoc cham). This was the perfect texture to complement the sweet, savoury, spicy sauce.
We dined on corn riblets on the house from the owner, which wasn't yet part of the menu. It was marinated in what tasted like a mire poix of butter, fish sauce, spices, & herbs cooked to tender perfection - served under a healthy serving of Parmesan. What a unique fusion of new-age Vietnamese street food.
Our entrees included two servings of Bun Bo Hue for the boys & a Bo Ne for myself. My son was able to try the broth before ordering because he was concerned it would be too spicy & the team offered to give him a sample before he committed which was beyond anything I had expectations for. As a mother & a self-proclaimed foodie, this was both unexpected & a surprise. The Bo Ne was very different from what I'm used to in Toronto. The beef is sliced more thinly, with no tomato base where you're able to taste more of the beef & it's spices so that it's not overpowered by the acidic tomato sauce. It is more flavourful, juicy & easier to eat with the soft & crispy baguette.
They have single restrooms in the rear of the restaurant with a handwash station outside of the single stalls. Decor is so cute with paper lanterns, & a wall of red lucky envelopes (Li Xi), so much attention has been poured into every small detail from the reusable cans (coconut milk, jackfruit, lychee etc) to hold the utensils & paper napkins for your meal.
In regards to the service during our dining experience, I had made reservations for 6:30pm on a Saturday so travelling from out of town I wanted to ensure there was availability. From a planning perspective, it's important to secure a table because an hour into our meal I realized that the establishment had filled up quite a bit. If you are driving, there was street parking so be sure to come early so that you're not disappointed.
The owner, Galaxy made every conscious effort to make us feel welcome letting us know about undisclosed menu offerings & specials, asking about feedback about what our most favourite dishes were, what made it different from what we normally had, even spending 10 mins at the end of our meal just to pick our brains - from a different perspective, this was just a deep dive into what makes me love about those who heighten Vietnamese food & are able to show & elevate what stands apart.
A true depiction of ownership, craft & mastery. May Galaxy & his team be ever successful in their business. Top notch service from all team members tonight, thank you! A must try if you're a native to Montreal & if you're visiting, like myself & my family - be sure not to miss the opportunity of a truly stand-apart establishment showcasing both Northern & Southern Vietnamese cuisine ❤?
A little Vietnamese-style restaurant on plaza St-hubert. Overall, it's not bad, but I was a little bit disappointed with the experience. Firstly I came in because the menu outside indicated that they had Bun Rieu, & that's what I wanted to get, once inside & seated, I was informed that they didn't serve Bun Rieu, so I ordered the pork with rice & a bun bo Hue. Generally speaking the food taste was okay, but a few aspects made it underwhelming. Firstly, the soup was served room temperature, & had congealed fat floating on top. The soup tasted a bit bland & lacked complexity of flavour you usually get in a bun bo Hue. Also, it didn't have any pork hock. As for the pork with rice, the pork was served cold, overcooked & really dry. The veggies & sauce were good. As for the service, it was friendly, but slow. The ambiance was cozy & cute. They have a seating area with low chairs & they have a few tables with regular chairs. It gets quite busy during rush hour. Overall, I wasn't impressed with this restaurant, especially that the prices are considerably higher than other Vietnamese restaurants in Montreal.
Stumbled across this place while out with my friend the other day & was taken aback by how great the whole experience was, genuinely such a hidden gem. We got the banh bao (which was so good we decided to order seconds) & then we both ordered the bun rieu, which was so perfect for the rainy weather, accompanied by the atmosphere & the unique aesthetic of the place with the red plastic stools & tables, it just felt so cozy & comforting dining there. I've already recommend this place to some of my colleagues & others, & will absolutely continue to do so, especially for anyone looking for authentic viet cuisine!
Me & my friends decided to try this restaurant for the first time & it did not disappoint. The food was amazing & the service was 10/10 experience. Our server, Brandon, was attentive & made sure we had everything we needed. He was genuinely so nice & made the whole experience even better. We would be so glad if all restaurants had a Brandon to serve us. Definitely recommend coming here, I'll 100% be back :)
Stumbled upon this place for some drinks with friends while walking down St Hubert & they HIT the spot. But we couldn't resist & just had to try out the street food & grillades; best decision yet. They were shareable portions & very, very delicious!
Other than the food the environment was so immersive as well, I did not feel like I was in mtl - became a tourist in my own city!! & I can't forget to mention the warmth of the staff: very smiley & welcoming, & one waitress even offered to take our photo :)
Definitely recommend!! Your $$ will be well spent here
Looking for a place that literally has the heart & soul of Vietnam in it? this is the EXACT place when your craving Vietnamese food. From the meat to the bao buns, everything is made with such care & grace. The waiters & the chef are literally the sweetest & I always have the best time when I come here. Literally the best Vietnamese place in montreal!
At Tô Dinette Viet, it's easy to go from ordering a few dishes to filling the entire table 😮?💨🇻🇳
The menu offers a wide variety of Vietnamese classics, & each plate brings something different that makes it hard to stop at just one. As dishes keep arriving, it quickly turns into a full spread … so worth it 🍲
Travel to Vietnam without leaving Montreal. It's the kind of aesthetic place where you explore, try a bit of everything, & leave already thinking about what to order next time 🤤
The food was great! Staff members were very kind & attentive, especially Brandon the waiter, who served us efficiently. It was also a pleasure to talk to the head chef, Galaxy.
