This place is the definition of Japanese fine dining. The global experience was once that brought us back to Kamakura, a secluded Japanese village known for its majestic temples & hidden unpretentious sushi joints.to begin with, Mathew's service, knowledge & attitude are irreproachable. He sets the standards to what service should be. Secondly, the food's freshness is nothing we have tasted in canada up to last night. If I were to guess, The privately imported fish probably came all the way from Tsukiji Market. The simplicity of the recipes, contrasted by the exquisite presentation is something HF should be commanded for. No authenticity was lost among the explosion of flavours with every bite. To sum it up, as the Japanese explained to me, sushi is a delicacy that should be enjoyed & respected in its simplicity & is therefore definitely not an everyday meal. Hidden Fish chefs & staff thank you for a trip to Nippon through your exquisite & authentic cuisine. A first Michelin star should be on the table of discussion.

This was my second time going to Hidden Fish. After I got home from this recent visit I left a review with Libero (online reservation company Hidden Fish uses) & did not get any response from the restaurant to my complaint. So I will repeat it here. First off I will state the good. The restaurant put us at a very nice table after I mentioned one person in my party had mobility issues & was immunocompromised. Secondly, the hostesses & wait staff overall were friendly & polite. Thirdly, although the quality was fine & we enjoyed our meal it was not as good as the first time we went (in the fall) which absolutely blew our minds. In the fall we only had a la carte nigiri. A lot had to do with size of the nigiri & selection you get with the Chef's Choice. The size of the Nigiri for the Chef's Choice is about a third smaller than the Nigiri a la carte. So if you have the funds I would opt for the a la carte Nigiri. I would say you'll spend more (perhaps ~ $1 more per piece) this way but enjoyment level will be elevated substantially. Of course the more expensive the nigiri the better it is. Also I found the maki had mostly rice & little fish. This included the eel & the albacore. The Oro King maki was good with more fish. We ordered the Premium Sashimi; Chef's Choice Nigiri; several maki; additional nigiri plus drinks; the total bill with tax & tip was ~ $750 for 4 people (which included a total of 84 pieces; 3 mocktails & 1 cocktail). The big issue is we were cheated. Our very last order was Oro King Nigiri & O Toro Nigiri (one of the most expensive nigiri). We saved the best for last. Those are our favourites particularly the O Toro. Note that the waiter takes the order but another person serves all the plates & points out the name of each piece of fish. This "naming" woman looks very serious with microphone attached to her head & a demeanor befitting an army sergeant. She named every piece of fish (with military precision) for every plate & platter that came out. We had the O Toro in our Premium Sashimi & which was pointed out & named. So we had all seen what it looked like. Yet when we ordered another O Toro nigiri it was not O Toro it was Chutoro (fatty tuna vs medium tuna). We ate it & didn't say anything. I like Chutoro & it was good but it wasn't what we ordered & of course there is a difference in price with O Toro being more expensive. Also the O Toro along with salmon are the fish that I could identify easily even before this meal. When the bill came I saw I was charged for O Toro not Chutoro (which is what we were given). Up to this point everyone enjoyed the meal. It was New Year's Eve. Why make a fuss? But when I got home I thought about it & thought WHY would they do this? The chef may have made a mistake with the order (although I find that hard to believe since they are professionals) But the server (who knew her fish) pointed to it & said it was O Toro when it wasn't (when she had named it correctly in the Premium Sashimi just minutes ago). So that was a flat out lie. Note that the restaurant was not busy at all. She was not pressed for time or stressed. So of course this has now put a damper over the whole experience. If you are like me I don't like to be cheated or lied to. It made me wonder if other fish was given to us which weren't what she said they were? So what do I think about Hidden Fish? I am truly very disappointed in an establishment that thinks it's okay to cheat or pull a fast one over their customers.

Bit disappointed in quality of food. This is my second time here & first time was far superior. Perhaps the Master Chef was not present. Anyways the biggest disappointment was that I was given Chutoro when I ordered & paid for Otoro. For me a dishonest move by chef & server who named every piece of fish that came out on the dish & pointed to it & said it was Otoro. I didn't say anything & that is my fault too but really you rely on all the staff to be honest when you are spending hundreds of dollars on a meal. I spent almost $800 for 4 people (with only one cocktail) in total. So in the greater scheme of things spending $30 on a dish is not going to break the bank but it does give me pause as to whether I can trust this establishment & return again. It's too bad it was last dish we had too & my last bite.

One of the better sushi spots in town. I recommend the chef's sashimi & nigiri platters.

The chef's choice sashimi & nigiri are just out of this world. Here, you have to try otoro/chu toro (the fatty parts of the tuna's belly) sashimi. You don't need to chew, it just melts away. It is expensive but it was worth every penny. This place is hands down my favorite sushi restaurant in Montreal so far.

Average - Overpriced for the quality - Bad Service I had high expectations after seeing so many photos on Instagram, which should have actually hinted me that this place was likely not the omakase holy grail but rather more a flashy & pricey type of restaurant that leaves you disappointed. Definitely inferior quality than Jun I or Park. The presentations are nice, but the sushis were sometimes dry & not what you would expect from a top sushi place. The inside of the restaurant is also very tacky & of low quality finishing. I was having diner at the bar & the way the bar was made, we couldn't see the chefs make the sushi which defeats the purpose of bar seats at a sushi restaurant. The service was below expectations - I understand the 2 hour seating concept but the way the waiter was treating us just waiting for us to leave was disappointing. Also, the way the waiter stayed at 2 inches of me as I was paying to pressure me in giving me more tip was very unprofessional. Overall, you can tell the employees are inexperienced when compared to the employees at top sushi restaurants. I do not recommend

I had an incredible experience at Hidden Fish, it was truly special. The ambiance is absolutely beautiful, & peaceful. It's probably in my top ten favorite restaurants for decor.

The service was impeccable. Phet took excellent care of us, found a wonderful saké to go with our meal, & was both friendly, & professional. The rest of the staff was also very professional. Everyone knew what they were talking about, & the timing for each serving was perfect.

As for the sushi - it is the best I have ever had. We elected to do chef's choice. I've never had such unique, yet authentic sushi before. They were also somehow able to know EXACTLY how much food to serve for six people. The salmon noodles were to die for, & I wish I knew the names of the other things we got. You can't go wrong with ordering here. From start to finish - miso soup, sushi, & dessert, everything was tasty, & perfect.

I'm incredibly sad I don't live here, but I plan on coming back every time I'm in Montréal. This was truly & unforgettable restaurant.

Very fresh fish, most of them match very well with chef's unique sauce. Only the sour spicy sauce on the salmon sashimi is not tasty as well as others. Professional services provided, limited space for table, even for two people. A little bit over priced for fish, acceptable price for the whole though.

A clear notch above sushi restaurants in town, all in delicate flavors & subtle taste. A wide variety of fresh fishes, & especially the must - the AAAAA wagyu to die for. Knowledgeable & friendly staff with superb service - let's keep those two chefs in town !

food amazing, hands down, no comments the best sushi we've ever ate. thank you chefs!
waiters, service, i mean if i say dry, dry is a good word for the attitude. i won't elaborate, will give it another try. review here better than a public one. attitude. attitude. & attitude. I used to be in restaurant business & when a waiter can't shove a smile on his face no matter what, for the huge tip they get of all the tables, he/she is better out than ruining a service of an amazing food.

Hidden Fish is a Hidden Gem , the fish was the best & freshest I have seen in Montreal from all the Sushi Houses that are currently active. The proficiency of the Chefs & their respect of the tradition of Japanese cuisine is first rate. None of the foolishness of convoluted sauces of Park & the rest of the pretenders in this space.. simplicity is the basis to let the freshness & quality Of craftsmanship speak for them selves. Bravo & chapeau to this outstanding Restaurant. I will be back.
