Depuis 1957, St-Viateur Bagel fait partie intégrante de la culture et de la vie quotidienne des Montréalais. La légendaire boulangerie de la rue St-Viateur, qui opère 24 heures par jour 7 jours sur 7, vend plus de 1,000 douzaines de bagels par jour. Son fondateur, Myer Lewkowicz, a rapporté sa célèbre recette d'Europe de l'Est. Rouler les bagels à la main et les cuire au four à bois, c'est l'ancienne façon de faire et c'est l'art du savoir-faire. Le propriétaire actuel, Joe Morena, doté de plus de 45 ans d'expérience dans le domaine, s'assure que les traditions d'hier continuent à être respectées aujourd'hui. En un demi-siècle, l'entreprise familiale s'est considérablement développée et compte à ce jour 4 fabriques et 2 Bagel-cafés dans la région de Montréal. Visited as a tourist & had a wonderful experience. There was a wait which is unavoidable because this place is very popular, but even during the wait the staff kept people moving & informed. Excellent customer service, the best I've had in a while! I came with lots of family & a toddler & staff were so friendly & accommodating to a family. They even had a change table! The bagels were very tasty! I see why this place is so highly recommended.

Ca a l'air chouette. Malheureusement c'est un commerce dans lequel il faut tendre un bout de papier pour effectuer une transaction commerciale. Je goûterai une prochaine fois 😂 (peut être)

I love cinnamon raisin bagels & I was happy that St-Viateur's version of it is easily one of my favorites. It's way up there with Tal's Bagels (New York). People have said that Montreal bagels have a special taste & I agree. I'm glad we tried the ones from this place because the first time I tried Montreal bagels from a different place (from our trip last year), I was disappointed. But St-Viateur redeemed my opinion of Montreal bagels. My husband, whose not a bagel lover, thinks this one is really good - & that's saying a lot.
We waited for about 10-15 minutes to get a table but if you're taking your bagels to go, there's no wait at all. Also, this store only accepts cash payments or Canadian debit cards. There's a bank a few feet from the store so you can grab some cash from their ATM if you don't normally cash like us.

Classic Montreal Bagel Experience
I stopped by St-Viateur Bagel for breakfast & went straight for their popular smoked salmon on a sesame bagel- & it was the perfect introduction to why this place is so beloved in Montreal.
The sesame bagel came warm & fresh from the wood-fired oven, with that unmistakable Montreal-style texture: slightly crisp on the outside, soft & chewy inside, & just a hint of sweetness. It paired beautifully with the smoked salmon, which was rich, flavorful, & balanced nicely by the cream cheese & traditional toppings capers & onion.
What I loved most was the simplicity done right. No frills, no over-complication- just incredibly fresh, well-crafted ingredients that speak for themselves. The staff was friendly, service was quick, & despite the constant stream of customers, everything felt smooth & welcoming.
If you're visiting Montreal or just craving a top-tier bagel breakfast, the smoked salmon on a sesame bagel at St-Viateur is a must-try. It's a classic for a reason, & I'd absolutely come back for another.
