I was really excited to try Sep Lai for my first taste of Laotian food-& while the food itself was delicious, the overall experience left a lot to be desired.
We waited over an hour to place our order, even after telling the waitress multiple times that we were ready. When the food finally started arriving, it came in waves-so people at our table were eating at totally different times. Some were still waiting while others had already finished, which made things pretty awkward.
I had the dried meat with a super tasty sauce, the chicken spring roll, & the soup. All of it was genuinely delicious, & I was very happily surprised.
The biggest downside: we were seated on the back terrace, right next to a pile of garbage that smelled strongly of dead fish & cat litter. It was disgusting. We had to step away several times because the stench was unbearable. That really ruined the vibe.
Food was great-but bad service & a gross setting made it hard to enjoy.Voir plus
Excellent experience at Sep Lai. We were 3 & ordered 4 dishes & they were good potion. All of them were very good & nicely presented. The waitress was nice & friendly & we loved the terrace. It is really great to be able to bring our own wine or beer. I will go back.Voir plus
Great neighborhood treasure ...creative, delicious Laotian cuisine. Dinner last night was so good I thanked the chef. Everything she prepared was delicious & fresh, with great combinations of flavors. The tapioca & taro pudding with coconut cream & black sesame seeds is one of the best desserts I've ever had. Charming terrace out back in the summer.Voir plus
Beautiful outdoor terrace & simple but good food.Voir plus
Had a lovely evening with family to celebrate my spouse's birthday. The terrace was very nice & the mango salad was a highlight !Voir plus
Absolutely awesome place! Terrace is fantastic, looks absolutely dreamy with lights in the evening & they even provide blankets so you don't feel cold. You can bring your own wine too. Food was top notch, such beautiful plates for only 20$, you'd think you are at the fancy place with $$$. Atmosphere was just surreal, SO romantic, perfect place for a date or just a meal you'll never forget.Voir plus
Food was nice (the muu heng mao was so good) & the service was friendly but kitchen forgot part of our order. The outdoor terrace looked very nice but was packed so we were sat inside, unfortunately the window we were sat in front of was covered with flies (inside)Voir plus
This place is a gem! It's my second time here in the last month, & I'll go back before I leave for sure! The food is incredible, the service is outstanding, the prices are decent, the place looks beautiful (especially the terrace in the back) & it's a bring your own wine. The hostess, Elsa, was so welcoming & caring. She even brought us blankets in case we were cold at the terrace because it was a cold evening. If you are not sure what to order, they have a tasting menu with many different items & the quantities are perfect. I also strongly recommend the Khao Poon, the meatballs & the calamari!Voir plus
I came with a group so we decided to order many dishes to share among us. The Laap is a fresh herb salad. The French shallots are so pungent, they overpower the taste of the herbs. So I preferred the papaya salad which was sweeter. The vegan meatballs taste & feel like real meat! They bring you a container of crushed peanuts to add on your dishes if you need. My mistake is I didn't asked if the Pina colada was vegan. It came with whipped cream on top. During summer, dining at the terrasse is a must! However, it was a bit incommodating when somebody smoking was passing by, since the terrace is in the backyard of the restaurant.Voir plus
I really wish I could give a good comment because I've been to this location when it was another restaurant & it was lovely. Sadly, we've never had such a bad service. To begin, I think I stand at the entrance for at least 7 minutes before the girl at the reception acknowledged me. She was on the phone & never even looked at me even if I was standing right in front of her. We reserved a table at the terrace but we got a table inside the back of the restaurant. Our waitress was not very helpful at explaining & recommending the menu. We got kicked out of the restaurant at 10:20 in a very unfriendly manner. Food was just ok, too salty for nothing. On a good note our bill was not expensive... I guess this is what you get when you don't spend a lot at a restaurant!Voir plus
The food is delicious! Fresh, light & full of flavour. The sitting area is cozy & they have a cute terrace in summer. I will definitely go back!Voir plus

Delicious food, great atmosphere on the terrace & lovely staff. Thanks
We came to Sep Lai as a group of 15 people, & we had a blast! Our waitress Sophie was incredibly sweet & attentive, the food was very delicious & tasted fresh. We were on the terrace, & it was beautifully decorated. We had a wonderful & unforgettable evening.
Some suggestions:
The food did take a little while to come, it would be great to reduce the waiting time between dishes.
It was a little bit windy when we visited, an outdoor heater would maybe be a good addition on chillier days. However, they did offer blankets for guests who were starting to get cold which was very nice!
The chefs at Sep Lai come from Laos so the dishes presented have a unique flavour. Everything is prepared fresh to order & majority of the dishes can be prepared gluten free or vegetarian. These options are clearly indicated on their menu. Sep Lai has a charming terrace in the back of the restaurant. In the event of inclement weather they have a collapsible roof that they extend over the tables. The restaurant is a bring-your-own wine & it is conveniently located across the street from the Charlevoix metro station.
