Restaurant Solymar Montreal delivers authentic Peruvian flavors with generous portions and a lively Latin ambiance where ceviche and seafood are frequently praised and the large menu offers something for every palate. Guests highlight fresh fish, tasty ceviche, and standout dishes like lomo saltado when well executed, along with crowd favorites such as chupe and picarones, plus reliable lunch specials and effective catering for office events. Prices are on the higher side, but many feel the quality and portions justify the cost, and recent visits show improvements in seafood dishes, desserts, and overall consistency. Service is generally friendly and attentive, though experiences can vary with wait times and a few notes about cross contamination concerns from non-seafood diners. The restaurant remains a popular choice for a celebratory Peruvian meal with bold flavors, generous servings, and a welcoming atmosphere in Montreal.
I'm editing my review. After coming back a couple of times, I've noticed several improvements. The quality of the plates has improved, especially the ones based on seafood. Ceviche is always good & Pisco Sour is the best I've tried in a very long time. Propably the most common plates are not so good (I don't like Jalea or Lomo Saltado here) but other plates are delicious (like Chupe, Pariguela). The desserts have also improved, I recommend the picarones. The prices are still a little high, but they're similar to other Peruvian restaurants in Montreal.
My partner & I visited Sol y Mar with friends & were genuinely excited to try it. Unfortunately, the food experience was a letdown for us.
We don't eat seafood or fish (simply not our thing & hate the taste), so we both ordered the steak with peppercorn sauce. Sadly, the meat had a very strong fishy aftertaste, & the fries tasted like they had been cooked in the same fryer as seafood. Because of this, we had to send both dishes back.
We reordered another beef-based dish, hoping for a better outcome. While it was slightly improved, there was still a noticeable fishy taste. Since we were dining with three other friends, we didn't want to send our plates back a second time & reluctantly ate what we could.
That said, the service was decent. Our server was attentive, professional, & genuinely kind throughout the evening, which made the situation easier to handle.
Overall, the hospitality was great, but for people who don't eat seafood, cross-contamination in the kitchen seems to be an issue in my opinion & unfortunately, this significantly impacted our experience & left us disappointed with the food.

This place is phenomenal, simply delicious & full of flavours! A weekly go-to as takeaway, a mix of the seafood rice, the fried seafood platter, ceviche, & then we try a newer dish as well. The sauces are also delicious, always a treat to order from this place.
The food was too expensive. We took ceviche, fried seafood, two beers & the bill was 100$! The food was okay, but for the price not worth it. Ceviche fish, the fried seafood didn't seem freshly made! The quantity was generous, but I wouldn't pay this much for food not feeling good enough. On top, we had to wait for like 30 minutes when it wasn't even busy.
The food here is amazinggggg. Me & my family have been going here for years. The seafood options are really delicious & you get a lot for what you pay for. It can be a little loud sometimes but that's just their vibe! Definitely recommend.

Before, this was our go-to restaurant, however, recently they hiked up the prices & lowered the quality. Their servings are much smaller & with less seafood than before, increasing the amount of filler food. Although the service was good, I can't justify the amount they charge for what they deliver. Needless to say we will not be coming back, & I will be taking my business to one of the many other Peruvian restaurants.
