Our experience started started strange & unpleasant: we came in just in time for our reservation & had to wait for almost 10 minutes for the hostess. She was on a phone the whole time, actually being quite rude to the phone guest, figuring out the reservation 2 months from now - while we just stood in front of her. When she finally decided to put her call on hold she didn't even apologize or acknowledge our long useless wait. Alright…
Then we waited for drinks for 30 minutes - our first app was served before our cocktails. Just because they didn't see them on the bar - they stood there melting for 20 minutes. Barely an apology here as well.

Food, however, compensated for this - great steak tartare, lovely octopus & desserts were amazing.

I really liked the food & the atmosphere of the restaurant, so I hope the service mishaps were a one time thing but it was still unacceptable for a restaurant of this level.View more

Overall we had an okay experience there. The fois gras parfait was good. We didn't feel it was heavy. Bone marrow & Burgundy snails were greasy. The bouillabaisse was tasty. The scallop was quite tender. We asked for a medium cooked beef rib eye steak & expected it to be tender. It turned out to be tougher than we expected. Also, 10.5oz was huge lol

The drinks we ordered were fine. I liked the pistache. My first time having a cocktail 🍸 with pistachio flavor. Quite interesting. Loved the cute butterfly 🦋 on the ice cube 🧊.View more

We had a wonderful lunch at Monarque & were truly impressed by the entire experience. The service was excellent, every staff member was friendly, attentive, & constantly smiling, which made us feel so welcomed.

Both the cocktails & mocktails were well-crafted & reasonably priced, adding a refreshing touch to our meal. The food was absolutely fantastic & surprisingly affordable compared to similar fine dining spots in Toronto. My top favorite was the bone marrow, only $24 for a huge portion & packed with flavour. A must-try!

Highly recommend Monarque for anyone visiting Montreal. We'll definitely be back again in the future!View more

(Late review, we went in Feb 2025.)

We did not expect to like this restaurant as much as we did! It's our new'coup de coeur'. Booked a table online for the bar section (brasserie), which was surprisingly easy.

Everything was delicious & the service was efficient. The cocktails were great, creative, & perfectly adapted to the dishes. The bone marrow dish is a must, with the richness of the marrow perfectly balanced by the acidity of the red wine jus, & the crunchiness of the toast underneath. I'm still dreaming about that dish! The pepper sauce of the pork chops was fantastic, a nice Asian twist to its classical version. Bouillabaisse was very good, if one likes this type of fish stew. The seafood inside was plentiful. The rouille served on toast was a tasty accompaniment. Highly recommend their tea-flavored crème brûlée. The pistachio cake was good, but not a standout.

Overall, we were very impressed by this restaurant's food pairing. The portions were also generous, & the price fair, for such a restaurant. It's on our favorites list now!View more

I had a delicious dinner last night at Monarque. Sat at the bar & Johanna served us. She was so nice, friendly, helpful & attentive. In fact all the staff are friendly & so polite. Had the signature Monarque cocktail which was perfect. The halibut, salad & cauliflower were delicious, so tasty & beautifully prepared. We didn't have room for dessert unfortunately, I know their desserts are fantastic as well.
What makes Monarque so special is the great ambiance, delicious food, excellent service & friendliness of all the staff. Can't be beaten!! Looking forward to my next visit!!View more

The place is quite stunning, well thought out & really well located. The staff couldn't have been nicer & truly pleasant to interact with.

Cocktails were OK… out of the four we tried we somehow liked only of them. The three others were good but nothing to remember.

Wine list was great but again pretty standard for this type of restaurant in Montreal.

In my opinion the food wasn't great, everything we ate was good but it wasn't a meal we'll remember for a long time. It's definitely on the pricier side of things so expectations were high & sadly not met.

All & all, it's still a really popular spot in Montreal with a great location, amazing decor, superstar service & slightly above average food.View more

We read great reviews & were excited to try Monarque. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. The service was cold & inattentive. No one checked up on us. Our water glasses were barely refilled. I noticed the tables around us received better service & the servers constantly checked on them. I don't know why. While no one was rude to us, we weren't properly attended to, receiving just the bare minimum of hospitality.
The wine selection & wines by the glass was fine, but the cocktails were extremely weak & 90% ice. I am not exaggerating. I took one sip of my drink through the straw, & there was no more liquid. The glass was filled to the brim with ice. This was the same for all 4 cocktails I ordered. The food was average at best for a French restaurant of this high standard. The portions were also very small. I'm used to French dining & I'm aware portions are usually small. However, this was the smallest I've ever received in a French restaurant in the city, especially at this price. My table of 3 ordered 12 oysters, octopus, foie gras, & tartare to start with. For the mains, we had duck confit, veal cheeks, & boudin. For dessert we had Pavlova & poached pear hazelnut. Everything was average. Not good & not bad, but nothing to rave about. The best part were the oysters. They were fresh & juicy. Not sure if I will return.View more

Everything was fantastic! We were a group of six, & each dish we ordered was absolutely amazing & delicious. The only downside for me was the cocktails, which were disappointing because they were pre-bottled. When I order a cocktail, I expect it to be freshly prepared by a bartender with their unique touch & served with beautiful presentation-not something pre-bottled.View more

Dining at Monarque was a memorable experience. We got reservations for the brasserie, which was very nice inside but more casual than a strict fine dining environment, & had nice views of the kitchen. Staff were attentive & professional the whole night, & the coat check was nice. For cocktails, the Lady Marmalade was my favorite for a juicy option, or the oddjob otherwise. The spritz mocktail was a little underwhelming, & tasted more like a seltzer. Appetizers vary in size, so check with the server if you want to share. The prosciutto salad was lovely, it had just enough flavor between the salty meat & touch of dressing, & a mix of textures from the almond. Recommend the wild mushroom gnocchi as a delicious vegetarian appetizer, & the lamb with the ravioli was indulgently tender. The duck was fantastic: flavorful & perfectly cooked. The lamb was also just the right amount done, not overly heavy but rich with the sauce. The cornish hen was good, though not remarkable. I liked their rendition of bouillabaisse. I highly suggest the tarte tatin as a shareable appetizer for two or three people, it had soft spiced apples & a flakey crust. The peach cobbler was delicious, & the mango pavolva was very fresh- the mango topping was tart, which I personally much prefer. I might like the center a little more done in the pavlova. My meal here felt cohesive, & in the brasserie I could pick & choose from a variety of options. I highly recommend Monarque for a nice occasion, its also quite accessible from the underground city if you want to walk there in the winter months.View more

This restaurant offers an upscale, modern dining experience with two distinct areas: a formal dining room & a more casual bar area. Upon arrival, the host staff took our jackets, which was a nice touch. We chose to sit in the bar area since we were dressed more business casual, black pants, a black top, & a silver belt for me, & dark jeans with a blue button-up for my partner, paired with boots due to the snowy & icy weather. Unfortunately, our server was bit annoyed with us, because we weren't dressed as formally as others (he actually commented on it) . It was disappointing to feel treated differently compared to the table next to us, but we tried not to let that dampen the experience. The food was exceptional. The steak was perfectly cut & cooked to our liking-easily the best we've had in Montréal. The bass was flavorful & deliciously prepared, & the mushroom risotto melted in my mouth (my partner opted for fries which he said were crispy & delcious). We started with a cheese plate as an appetizer, which was also a fantastic choice. For dessert, we had the pear buckwheat cobbler with ice cream, which was amazing. I didn't think I'd have room for dessert, but I'm so glad I made it happen! I also ordered the Lady Marmalade cocktail, which was refreshing . Despite the service hiccup, the food & atmosphere made it a memorable evening. I'd return for the incredible food but would dress more formally next time.View more

Great dinner & drinks spot. The food is incredible & the portion size was huge! Service staff were very helpful, polite, & quick. It's a very busy & popular spot so get a reservation. We chose the Brasseries over the Dining Room just based on the menu & we weren't disappointed with our choice. I'm sure the Dining Room is good too though! Cocktails are well done too!View more

The food, cocktails, & wine were quite good, & we would have had a good experience had it not been for the absolutely awful, non-existant service. I wish I was exaggerating, but our waiter said maybe 15 words to us over the entire ~2 hour dinner service, only saying more than one word responses when we asked for a wine recommendation. He provided completely non-verbal responses when ordering, did not ask if we wanted to order additional drinks after our first (we had to specifically request for additional glasses of wine/cocktails), did not explain anything about the food, restaurant, or ask us anything about ourselves. Generally very unfriendly & unkind. He acknowledged our orders with a frown & a slight nod of the head every time. I wish I could tell you who specifically our server was, but he did not even bother introducing himself. He felt very hostile & annoyed he had to have to serve us. There were multiple instances where we were without drinks, meaning the restaurant lost out on additional revenue we would have spent on alcohol. After our table's second drink order, he took the wine list away & did not offer to return it for the rest of the evening, even after clearing away our empty glasses midway through the third course. After ordering red wine, the waiter poured my glass but ended up spilling a sizeable amount on the table & into the bread basket. The waiter noticed he spilled, but did not apologize or acknowledge it to us in any way, he simply walked away without a word. By the end of dessert, our last course, the waiter we had for most of the evening had not come around for 15 minutes after our plates were clearly finished & our drinks were empty. I flagged down another waiter who was walking by, who explained to me that our original waiter was gone for the night & that he was supposed to be replacing us. The original waiter did not explain to us that he was leaving for the night, & the new waiter in charge of our table did not introduce himself until I had to get his attention myself. We certainly don't expect to be treated special by any means, but this service was the literal bare minimum that could have been provided to us. It left us wondering if maybe we were under dressed & were being shunned for it (even though other waiters were happily treating other guests in tshirts & shorts), or that we had said something to offend the waiter at the start of service. Although this review is quite scathing, we are always especially friendly with wait staff & almost never complain about service, so I cannot understand what we possibly did to deserve service that amounted to rudely & non-verbally plopping the food we ordered at the table. Nobody asked us once how our food or service was. This was *by far* the worst service I've experienced, not only in Montréal, but at any restaurant I've ever dined at. It was such a complete shock that it came from an establishment where we expected to spend about $600 between two of us (but ended up spending less as we opted out of a cheese course & did not order as many drinks as anticipated, both due to the service). I would have been annoyed if we received service like this at a McDonald's, but at a fine dining establishment, I thought it was completely & absolutely unacceptable. We will be vehemently recommending that our friends & family who visit Montréal avoid Monarque at absolutely all costs. A completely & total disappointment from a restaurant we were very much looking forward to experiencing.View more

After a few visits to Montreal with no reservation success, I was able to snag a last minute Brasserie table reservation for 1! I arrived & was immediately brought to my table & walked through the menu by Vincent. He gave great reccomendations & was great about checking in. Honestly, the entire staff felt like they were trained in hospitality. The host came by to check on me in & took another drink order. & the server, who was taking care of the table next to me, also took a moment to make small conversation. I regularly dine out alone due to work travel & while I don't always feel comfortable, I was put at ease the entire time. Okay the food/cocktails - AMAZING! The bartenders make wonderful cocktails that are both enjoyable to watch being created as they are to drink. I got the Farigola & the Colibri. The food was wonderful as well. I ordered the ricotta ravioli which balanced the cheese & meat super well. Raviolis were cheese filled & the meat was underneath. The fried cauliflower was huge (this is the single portion) & very butter forward if that's your thing - it's my thing so I obviously loved it. The steak was cooked to exactly medium rare (as ordered) & the fries were perfectly crispy. 10/10 would reccomend... if you can get a reservation ;)View more

View more

View more

This was my first time experiencing Monarque & I will certainly be going again.
As soon as you enter the decor & ambiance are fantastic, you can choose to eat at the brasserie or main restaurant & make sure to look up both as the menu varies.
The wait staff is attentive making sure our glasses are promptly filled (water & wine) & the table is tidy.
Our waiter was very helpful in describing the dishes & allowing us to make choices based on in depth descriptions, he was spot on !
We started with two cocktails, the Monarque & pistache. Both were perfectly balanced & although the ingredients might sound strange they were both delicious!
The bone marrow is fantastic served with escargots & a rich & flavorful reduction.
The tartare was perfectly executed with waffle fries & endives.
The bouillabaisse was beautifully filled with various seafood & a fantastic broth.
The veal sirloin was perfectly cooked & seasoned served on top of a ratatouille, one cannot ask for a better dish !
The waiter was also excellent at suggesting excellent wine pairings with each of our courses.
A definite must if you want a great overall dining experience.View more

First course, bison tartare, fresh & savoury, anchovies added a wonderful salty twist & cured egg yolk a rich sauce.
Second course, seared foie gras & potato alla chitarra. Foie gras was just decadent, perfectly cooked & salted. Sweet & tangy sauce cuts the richness perfectly. Potato alla chitarra, wonderful bite to the potato, rich sauce accompanied by a sort of mashed potato sausage. Creative & delicious.
Main course, venison & piglet. Venison served with seared mushroom & a tart pan sauce. Perfectly rare, surpisingly tender for game. Piglet tender & juicy. Hoisin-esque sauce. Interesting pork sausage wrapped in cabbage, though this last part was not exactly my speed it was objectively delicious.

Cocktails were complex but not pretentious, sweet & tasty unlike so many fancy cocktails.

Came for my birthday & they brought complementary mini pastries.

The service was fast, polite & perfectly over-the-top. Felt taken care of, well received & exactly as one would want to on a special evening. Expensive & worth every penny.View more
