Service was top notch & attentive & we enjoyed the recommended three courses (four, if you add dessert). We found the portions small enough to accommodate all three although the third course could have been split. Our favorite dish was the miso black cod! Would strongly recommend for a birthday dinner or anyone traveling from out of town!
Superb & attentive service & excellent food. We had an early dinner reservation here, & due to unforeseen circumstances, we were in a rush. We informed the staff, & we were seated rapidly. Our appetizers arrived in less than 10 minutes & our main courses came less than 5 minutes later. We were done with our meal in less than an hour, leaving us plenty of time. All the wait staff we interacted with really went above & beyond to get us a quick meal that didn't feel rushed or stressed. The food itself was great. The hummus was unique & the chicken soup had a robust flavor. The milk chocolate creme brulee was delicious & had just the right level of sweetness. I'd highly recommend this place - extraordinary service is rare these days, & this place has it.
Dining at Monarque was a memorable experience. We got reservations for the brasserie, which was very nice inside but more casual than a strict fine dining environment, & had nice views of the kitchen. Staff were attentive & professional the whole night, & the coat check was nice. For cocktails, the Lady Marmalade was my favorite for a juicy option, or the oddjob otherwise. The spritz mocktail was a little underwhelming, & tasted more like a seltzer. Appetizers vary in size, so check with the server if you want to share. The prosciutto salad was lovely, it had just enough flavor between the salty meat & touch of dressing, & a mix of textures from the almond. Recommend the wild mushroom gnocchi as a delicious vegetarian appetizer, & the lamb with the ravioli was indulgently tender. The duck was fantastic: flavorful & perfectly cooked. The lamb was also just the right amount done, not overly heavy but rich with the sauce. The cornish hen was good, though not remarkable. I liked their rendition of bouillabaisse. I highly suggest the tarte tatin as a shareable appetizer for two or three people, it had soft spiced apples & a flakey crust. The peach cobbler was delicious, & the mango pavolva was very fresh- the mango topping was tart, which I personally much prefer. I might like the center a little more done in the pavlova. My meal here felt cohesive, & in the brasserie I could pick & choose from a variety of options. I highly recommend Monarque for a nice occasion, its also quite accessible from the underground city if you want to walk there in the winter months.
The chic decor & attentive staff stood out. The pretzel was fantastic, hot from the oven. The octopus was good, though the chorizo was a bit strong. The steak was juicy, & the duck had nice flavors. The cheesecake was a bit dry, & the prune compote overpowered it, though the figs were fresh. Overall, the price was fair for the quality. Worth a visit!
Great experience. It's pricey but we really enjoyed it. Pretty formal & upscale vibes with a huge wine selection. We sat in the dining room (menu is very different from the bar) & had the scallop crudo, grilled sweetbreads & the cote de bouef for 2. Our server was attentive but not intrusive which was great. Did a good job of explaining the menu & helping pick a wine. Fair warning - if you get the cote de bouef you may want to consider not ordering from every course as the portion is massive! It was a perfectly cooked giant steak with really great potatoes au gratin & a simple salad. Would like to go back & try the brasserie menu as that looked excellent as well.
We visited Monarque by recommendation of my husband's colleague who visiting Montreal regularly. We love it! We chose to dine in its casual more affordable price point Monarque Brasserie & we visited twice as the first time was excellent! I will review both visit in 3 days apart in key areas that important to our dining experience. SERVICE The first greeting, table seating & our table service was immaculate & contributed & complemented our first dining experience at Monarque. The personnel who looked after us on Tues 23 July 24 (sorry we did not get your name) was absolutely fantastic! One of the best, & the best asset to the establishment! He was professional, attentive but not intrusive. He was helpful with the wine & frankly making us deciding to ho back 2nd time even we had many other restaurants in our wish list. We only had 5 dinners in the city & we chose Monarque twice. The second service was amiss, unfortunately. Greeting was cold, no smile, no eyes contact, took us to the wrong area of booking but all resolved. Our waiting personnel was aloof, more attentive to certain tables so we were left having to try to get his attention when we wanted to order more drinks & desserts. FOOD Classic French dishes & to-die-for desserts! We had foie gras, lamb ratatouille, canard, seafood bouillabaisse, grilled octopus & passion fruit pavlova. All 10/10. Wine list is great. We are not heavy drinker so love a few glasses of good wine & it does not disappoint. AMBIENCE A blend of modern & retro deco, warm & flattering lighting, sexy bar area with sleek bartenders. People watching here looked fun & romantic date is good (except if the service is amiss second time- wouldn't be fun). Music is good level of sound, ventilation is great. Feel airy & comfortable to be in.
Came in for a rather late reservation on a Thursday, & lingered over every course. Never felt rushed, service was classy & friendly. Sweetbread dish is superb, I hope it gets ordered often because the preparation is delicious. After paying bill & on my way out, I was having a quick glance through the window to the kitchen out of professional curiosity because I work in kitchens myself. The (who I assume) maitre d' saw me & very kindly offered to take us through & show us around the kitchen! I was blown away by the hospitality, especially as we'd already paid & the staff were obviously working on closing up. Superb restaurant & very skilled & attentive team, well deserving of their stellar reputation!
We went to Monarque on our last night in Montreal, & we were glad we did, since no other meal measured up. We ate in the brasserie side, which is a bit more casual, with a less expensive but still top-notch menu. The servers were very attentive & knowledgeable. Everything we ate, from the bread to the ricotta cheesecake, was delicious. Highly recommended!
I was excited to dine at the Monarque, as I had heard good things about the food. However, my night there was quite disappointing. The food was great, but the service by my server & the service manager (a gentleman in a light blue shirt) was entirely lacking. I try not to leave reviews on negative dining experiences, as they can be subjective. I am leaving this review to encourage the management to review & improve their service. I visited last Friday's late dinner service (20:45, July 5th, 2024). It was a less busy time, with quite a few empty tables. 1. We received the wrong first course. When one of the service managers (light blue shirt) came to check how our food was, I gently notified him that I received the wrong first course. He double-checked & acknowledged the mistake, but he never apologized. Instead, he made the service staff who delivered the food apologize to me, which was unnecessary. Mistakes happen. It's okay. 2. Our other first course never came. As the same service manager removed our plates & utensils, I gently notified him that I had never received the foie gras. He replied, "Oh, now you want to order foie gras?" Again, I gently let him know I made the order with my server & asked him to check. He checked, acknowledged the order was in place, dropped off one set of utensils without a new plate on the side of the table, & then walked away. Neither the service manager nor my server ever apologized for the mistake or how he spoke. The service should reflect if the dining costs $150+ per person. My server was barely attentive to my table, & the service manager's handling of their mistake was unprofessional. I thank the other service staff again who delivered my food, changed my utensils & poured my drinks. They provided an excellent service.
Creative French food & excellent service The restaurant is large & busy, with a sophisticated touch. The buzz around doesn't stop you from being able to hear who is at the table. Additionally, there is a special wing downstairs that I assume is for reservations exceeding 8 people (nice that the group can have privacy) The food is very tasty, creative, with great presentations. As a recommendation, I leave the Foie Gras (sea buckthor, duck pastrami, candy cap, brioche feuilletee) which came accompanied by a small croassaint & a gelatin film (?!), delicious & extremely creative! The Ravioli was very intriguing, with each bite I could taste more flavors, high on the list of recommendations. Tuna Tartare & Green Asparagus were disappointing, they had a good presentation but the flavor left something to be desired. Olivia's service should be left here as a note of great affection. She was very attentive & helped me with choosing & tasting the wine. I would definitely come back! Ps:. great visual identity
We met friends at Monarque last night for dinner & drinks. The wait staff was fantastic, with a perfect measure of attentiveness - always making sure that our experience was great without getting intrusive. We sampled a number of dishes. The fries were done to perfection (gotta start somewhere); the steak tartare was extremely flavorful (a must try); we then progressed to share a dozen oysters - with fresh grated horseradish & mignonette. For mains, we ordered the special - a roasted pork shoulder served on a bed of vegetables - which took an hour to prepare. Our friends ordered the pork chop & the cuit du jour - grilled flank steak. While we waited for our mains we shared a plate of sauteed mushrooms, & another of asparagus & fiddleheads. Both were extremely tasty. The mains arrive... The lamb shoulder was... Wow. Just wow. Slow roasted to perfection, it had a crispy exterior & juicy, succulent flesh. Every taste was spectacular. We wrapped up with dessert - my wife had the ice cream sandwich, I had the creme caramel. Nice way to finish off. A great shout out to Sonia, our server, & Serge, who assisted us in making the overall experience such a pleasure.
Dining at Monarque in Montréal is an unforgettable culinary experience that perfectly blends contemporary elegance with classic French sophistication. From the moment you step into the stylishly appointed space, you're greeted by an atmosphere that is both welcoming & refined. The restaurant's interior is a harmonious blend of modern design & timeless charm, featuring high ceilings, exposed brick walls, & an open kitchen that adds a dynamic touch to the dining experience. For the main course, the lamb is a standout, cooked to perfection & paired with imaginative sides that elevate the dish. This lamb is low-cooked to tender perfection & served with a savory jus that adds depth to each bite. Service at Monarque is impeccable, with attentive & knowledgeable staff who enhance the dining experience with their professionalism & warmth. The team's dedication to providing an exceptional dining experience is evident in every detail, from the thoughtful recommendations to the seamless service. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply indulging in a night out, Monarque offers an unparalleled dining experience that is sure to impress.
I had a great experience here for a presentation in their basement conference room. The service was attentive, the staff were super friendly & refilled our drinks/water constantly throughout the night (we never had an empty glass). The food was nicely prepared, flavors were balanced, the pavlova dessert was huge : some of my colleagues were not able to finish it. Overall a great experience & I can't wait to come back & try their full menum
We made reservations here for our anniversary dinner & it did not disappoint! We sat at the bar (highly recommend!) & really enjoyed our dining experience from start to end. Staff were amazing, friendly & was evident they really enjoyed their environment. Service was prompt & attentive. Loved the vibe & atmosphere of the restaurant. Last but not least, the food. Incredible dishes all around. We ordered oysters, bone marrow, pear & prosciutto salad, steak & braised veal cheek. Every single dish blew us out of the water. Finished with their chocolate cake that was also a hit. Highly recommend. Thank you for a lovely evening!
This has easily become one of my favourite restaurants in Montreal. They have 2 sections which offer different menus: the brasserie with an ala carte menu & salle a manger that's a table d'hôte. I chose the brasserie as I wanted to try the bone marrow snails. It was a little greasy, which is to be expected, but overall it was delicious! The duck confit was also perfectly crispy & cooked well. Service was a bit slow but attentive otherwise. It gets really loud in the brasserie during peak business hours, so if you want somewhere quieter, consider the salle a manger.
Really great food & attentive staff! Came as a solo diner but didnt feel weird or awkward at all! Had the mushroom gnocchi, duck confit, & layered chocolate coconut cake. All of the food was great with the duck being a little salty, but the flavor was good & rich. Also had the Monarque cocktail & both the mock tails which were tasty as well!
This was my first time experiencing Monarque & I will certainly be going again.
As soon as you enter the decor & ambiance are fantastic, you can choose to eat at the brasserie or main restaurant & make sure to look up both as the menu varies.
The wait staff is attentive making sure our glasses are promptly filled (water & wine) & the table is tidy.
Our waiter was very helpful in describing the dishes & allowing us to make choices based on in depth descriptions, he was spot on !
We started with two cocktails, the Monarque & pistache. Both were perfectly balanced & although the ingredients might sound strange they were both delicious!
The bone marrow is fantastic served with escargots & a rich & flavorful reduction.
The tartare was perfectly executed with waffle fries & endives.
The bouillabaisse was beautifully filled with various seafood & a fantastic broth.
The veal sirloin was perfectly cooked & seasoned served on top of a ratatouille, one cannot ask for a better dish !
The waiter was also excellent at suggesting excellent wine pairings with each of our courses.
A definite must if you want a great overall dining experience.
This restaurant is located in beautiful old town Montreal, not too far from the Notre Dame. It is beautiful & modern inside & the lighting is nicely layered. We ate at the brassiere. Our waiter was very attentive & friendly. He was able to suggest a cocktail to drink as we were indecisive. We got buffalo mozzarella & wild mushroom gnocchi for appetizers. Both were delicious! The buffalo mozzarella was nicely seasoned with the vinaigrette. For the main course, I selected the butchers cut which was a flank steak with herbed butter on top. It came with a side of fries. The fries were delicious & crispy & served with mayonnaise. For dessert we got a tarte tatin. Caramelized apples with puff pastry & icecream…How can you go wrong?!? It was heaven! Overall it was a great experience & I would highly suggest it for a nice dinner out!
