We swung into McKiernan for lunch with no reservation, fully expecting to be punished for our spontaneity. Instead, parking was easy, the place was packed, & they sat us immediately with a one?hour limit - which is honestly the perfect amount of time to eat, judge, & leave before your optimism wears off.
The Vibe
A stunning space - huge hall, vintage floors, & that polished industrial look that sets the bar high before the food even arrives.
The Food
For a restaurant built on rotisserie comfort & house?made pasta, the execution didn't match the branding.
* Poulet Entier ($51) - Dry white meat at a rotisserie?forward spot is a miss. The gravy leaned so hard on butter it felt like the only flavor note.
* Choux de Bruxelles - Burnt exterior overshadowing a genuinely good sauce.
* Linguine Scampi ($30) - A surprisingly tiny portion for house?made pasta. Scampi were small, & the dish relied almost entirely on butter.
* Bonne Frites - Straightforward & solid.
* Donuts - The Tiramisu donut was the only item with real personality.
Beautiful place. Really good food. A bit pricey. Excellent waiters. Great desserts, especially their famous homemade donuts & their lemon & meringue pies.
The only downside is the noise level due to their high ceilings. & more lights shoud be added in the staircase. Another thing which I found really surprising is that now dogs are accepted. & I don't think that I approve because of the texture of the floors. They are beautiful old wooden varnished (& mostly unvarnished) planks & if a dog had an accident there, it would really be hard to clean it up properly because of the cracks between the planks. I naturally understand for guide dogs.

Had a great dinner here while visiting from Massachusetts. Everyone seemed to really enjoy working there. The food was delicious- especially the chicken & the donuts. One of the best Boston Crème I've had, even though we're from the Boston area! Special shout out to our busser, Charles, who was extremely attentive to us, the rest of the patrons, & his coworkers. I noticed him always helping everyone on the team out, checking in on us & others, being quick & efficient, & having a kind & personable attitude. He was very interactive with my (shy) three year old, bringing out her first'bonjour' on our trip!
Amazing food! Sauces are flavourful & nicely done. The rotisserie chicken & donuts are a must. The menu cold sell the food better, first time was difficult to decide the order because I didn't know the dish ingredients.
We've been to McKiernan several times over the last few years. Every time was an amazing experience from start to finish. This time however was anything but, & unfortunately soured our outlook on this restaurant for good.
After making reservations we were seated without any wait & took some time looking at the menu. First, we ordered a Burrata as a starter. My partner ordered Ribs. The waitress informed us it's just a plate of ribs for $31, & if we wanted any kind of side it would be an additional $7 at the very least. Weird to separate it like that but okay. She decides on the fries to go with it. I then ordered the Nordic Shrimp Scampi & Linguini.
After a little while enjoying our cocktails our meals arrive, with no Burrata as a starter. I ask about it & turns out the waitress forgot to put it in.. alright we all make mistakes. I ask them to send it out anyway & we'll eat it with everything. Now on to the meals. The ribs were plentiful & tasty, but the fries overbaked & under-seasoned. Nordic Shrimp Scampi, I take one look at the shrimp & just laugh. They are literally the size of my fingernail. The shrimps themselves weren't too fresh either, as if bought in a freezer bag from IGA. The pasta was again under-seasoned & had a pool of oil at the bottom of the bowl. The Burrata that finally arrived was another letdown. They used to serve it with tomatoes & pesto, but now replaced that with a pretentious slice of pear & salad dressing that overpowers the taste entirely. At least the cheese itself was fresh.
Time for dessert. I order a maple donut & my partner orders a brownie. Server asks if she wants ice cream with the brownie & my partner agrees. Everything arrives & my donut tastes EXACTLY like Tim Hortons. No exaggeration. Every donut place has their own distinct flavour & I KNOW what a Tim Hortons maple donut tastes like as it's been my go-to donut there for years. Brownie was nice & rich with the ice cream to cut the sweetness. Very good. Until we saw on the bill the ice cream was an extra $3 for one small scoop! The waitress didn't tell us that part when she asked if we wanted it.
& that's how our night ended. Utterly disappointed with not only the food, but the way they're doing business. It was such a shock to us all the upselling they're doing now. I've never seen it to that extent at any other restaurant & it was so sad to see them do it here. & without even telling us at one point on top of that. We knew from experience this restaurant was more on the expensive side, which we're perfectly fine with, but why make the customer pay extra for sides that should be accompanying the plate from the get-go? Or for one small scoop of ice cream on the brownie when it should already be there? We used to love this restaurant. Now, that has changed entirely & we won't be going back.
I came to this restaurant looking for an amazing experience because that's what all the reviews said however, I was extremely underwhelmed because the service was subpar. Our server might have had too many tables to work at the same time because the first fact the food that we got came cold.
I walked over to the manager, & I asked for a little bit more attention & service & got attitude instead of acknowledgment
The level of entitlement these people have for the mediocre food that they put out is amusing
Donuts were fire tho
Hope to come back soon with a much better experience

Beautiful spot nice building nice windows. parking available but usually quite full 🅿?. Food is great but little less options for brunch. The donuts are to die for. Staff were amazing & super accommodating for our friends & babies. On the pricier side but you get exactly what you paid for food is great!
We went as a big group, around 18 people. The food was excellent! My favorite dish were the Brussels sprouts. The roast chicken itself was amazing but I'm not a huge fan of mushrooms so the sauce provided wasn't my jam but still good! I also really liked the ribs. The dessert course slightly disappointed me, I was expecting more of a pouding chômeur type dessert but I liked the variety offered & they were still good (various donuts, cookie & brownies) Overall it was worth the money.
The location itself is well decorated & very spacious. It's an amazing place for a large group.
Unfortunately I only have pictures of the appetizers
I'd argue there is no better overall restaurant in Montreal than McKiernan. Their menu is always being switched up a bit to offer something new, & they never miss - the food is always a hit, with a great wine selection. I personally salivate over the prime rib.
I recommend going with a group, as McKiernan is best enjoyed when you can pluck things from multiple plates. More cost effective that way. Don't forget to get a donut for dessert!
Overall, I can't recommend McKiernan enough. Amazing resto.
Premium rotisserie/schnitzel spot that is still very reasonably priced for the quality. Order out, date night, large groups, they do it all & they do it extremely well.
Probably the best boston cream donuts in Montreal!

When I Comme to McKiernan I feel like
Home lol the food is so good & different from other restaurants, I just love it & im so lucky I leave close by :).
One of my favorite dishes is the Jagerschnitzel, & their donuts are so deliciousss!
I rarely give 5 stars, but this place is truly fantastic.
We were visiting from the NY area & went here several times during our stay - it was that good.
Why?
Classy, attentive, no-attitude service.
The best donuts I've ever had (by far). & they serve them daily & had 8 varieties to choose from!!
Finally, a large, pretty airy open interior space stands in stark contrast to some of the cramped interiors in the center of town.
The only criticisms I can think of is 1) while the fries were fresh cut I prefer a thicker cut fry & 2) they could use some more variety re breakfast items offered on their brunch menu.
I really love this spot for dinner. It's got this great, bustling energy without being too loud, making it perfect for a date night. You should definitely try to make a reservation ahead of time if you can.
At first glance, the menu can look a little all over the place, but once the food starts coming out it all makes sense. The roasted chicken is absolutely fantastic, chicken is cooked perfectly & the sauce is so good. The pasta dishes are also a great option with good portion sizes.
For sides, do yourself a favor & get the deviled brussel sprouts. They are seriously delicious & awesome for sharing. You might want to skip the fries, though. They can be a little hit or miss, sometimes coming out a bit overcooked & dry.
A quick tip for dessert: if you're eyeing the donuts, ask your server to set some aside when you first order your meal. They sell out super fast!
A Few Thoughts on Brunch:
I'm probably in the minority here, but the famous brunch double down just isn't for me. I don't get the hype. The hash browns feel both dry & oily at the same time, almost like they were pre-made & then just flash-fried to order. It's not a dealbreaker, but I'd recommend trying something else instead.
As for the service, it was only a mixed bag the last time I went. The hosts at the front were incredible-super helpful & welcoming. But our waitress seemed a little checked out. We all have off days, but it was weird to see her totally happy & chill with other tables but just meh/cold with us. She did perk up when I went to pay with cash, which I found kind of strange.
Overall, I'd still highly recommend this place for a great dinner out.
Update: went back recently, food & service was top notch, 5 stars all around.
If you haven't tried their brunch, RUN don't walk. It was my first time trying it & they did not disappoint! Servers are sooo friendly & fast. We tried the croque madame & the schnitzel sandwich + extra hashbrowns. Everything was sooo delicious! Just perfect portions & very tasty. We also got lattes, they were great! To top it off we ordered 2 donuts: dulce de leche & maple! Exquisite. Will definitely come back to try other items, the place has big windows that light the whole restaurant. The vibes are super nice.

Hidden in an industrial area near the Lachine Canal, McKiernan is a true hidden gem by the team behind Joe Beef.
Don't be fooled by the low-key entrance - inside is a warm, plant-filled space with beautiful natural light & high ceilings. Perfect for brunch, solo time, or a relaxed hangout with friends.
Today's special was a perfectly cooked medium-rare beef with fresh greens - incredibly tender & flavorful. The crispy Brussels sprouts were addictive, like snack food. The rigatoni was rich & satisfying (though not spicy as described).
The cutlet reminded me of a thick, crispy Shanghainese fried pork chop - so good. I also saw someone use hash browns as burger buns with fried chicken… genius idea I'll try next time!
Dessert was a surprise hit - a blueberry cheesecake donut that was juicy & light, not overly sweet. The orange blossom mocktail had a unique Jo Malone-style aroma - floral & refreshing (but wish it came in a bigger glass!).
Friendly service, no rush vibes, way more comfortable than noisy downtown spots. I'll be coming back again & again to try more!
I had a delightful lunch during the weekday. Beer (IPA, lager) consumed with roast beef sandwiches & side order of fries. Finished with expresso & shared Boston cream donut made on-site. The food was tasteful, & the service was prompt & excellent. Great decor with luncheon menu to match. It's a little pricy but worthy if looking for something different.
The vibe of this place is great. The waiters/waitresses are super friendly. Great choice for birthday parties. Food is delicious. The dolce de lece donut is to die for.
