Update 5/6/26: Been coming to her for years. She has a fish taco special with a tea or lemonade for 10$ before tax. So delicious & you can taste the love in the food. Please bring cash if you don't order pickup on ubereats.
Great food at a great price. You have the option of doing Uber eats, or ordering on a computer screen at the restaurant for a quicker service through debit or credit payment. The owner knows I'm a usual, so she leaves cookies with my order. Glad to feel appreciated when I get my usual meals.
The fried fish tacos special at Mama Bangkok should not be missed! It is unsuitable for takeout but well worth the subdued atmosphere in the Faubourg. It was a total surprise at 8.99$ (cash) for two tacos plus Thai iced tea to have the overwhelming sensations of fresh, refined, restaurant style dining. I will make the trip more often to sample more of their daily specials & hope to revisit these delightful tacos soon.
I don't usually leave negative reviews, but after this experience I felt compelled to share it.
I tried calling the restaurant four or five times ahead of my visit to place a preorder. I was picking up food with my young daughter & knew parking in that area downtown can be very difficult. Unfortunately, no one answered any of my calls. When we arrived, I even had to park briefly in front of a fire hydrant because there was nowhere else to stop.
When I walked in, there were no other customers in the restaurant, yet the employee behind the counter didn't even look up from the show they were watching on their laptop. Instead, they simply told me to use the self-order computer.
The ordering computer was extremely slow (almost like 90's dial-up) & the touchscreen barely worked. It took me nearly 10 minutes just to enter my order, which was very frustrating. During that time, I still had to ask the employee questions twice anyway. Meanwhile, my daughter was approached by an unhoused person asking her for money while I was stuck struggling with the ordering machine.
After finally completing the order, I went to the employee only to be told that the restaurant was cash only - not even debit cards were accepted. I asked where I might be able to withdraw cash nearby, & the employee simply replied'I don't know,' without even looking up from their computer.
At that point, I decided to leave.
The overall impression was not just poor service from one employee, but a general lack of care or respect for customers. Based on this experience, it seems clear that customer service is simply not a priority here.
Unfortunately, I can't recommend this place. There are many other businesses that will appreciate your time & money.
The customer service is extremely poor. It's unfortunate because the food itself is quite good. They really need to improve their attitude toward customers. Also, cash only? That's surprising & inconvenient.
UPDATE: The food gave me food poisoning. I felt unwell the entire evening following & then threw up. DO NOT EAT HERE
Everything is awkward with mama bankok: the location is awkward, looking through the gigantic menu plastered on the wall is awkward, ordering through their tablet is awkward, the service is awkward, the restrictive limits on how to pay is awkward, & the lack of chopsticks is awkward. Even the seating is awkward.
They bumped their price by a lot (pad thai chicken used to be 12, it costs me 19 total now) & I disagree with all the other comments saying this is the best pad thai or a very authentic one. I found it to be closer in taste to a Thai Express pad thai. Mine in particular was so salty I couldn't have more than a few bites.
By the 1st of january 2026 they are going to switch to cash only. That paired with everything else (especially the price bump), I don't see why you would ever choose this place over the hundred other asian restaurants around.
Amazing food. I order pad Thai with breaded chicken & it's my favourite pad Thai. The self-service system can be finicky but it's not a problem once you know how to use it. I never had an issue with service from the cashier (maybe it's a different person) but they've been nice & to-the-point.
Best Pad Thai in the city, I'm not even joking. I'd gladly let the rude cashier spit on me if that's what was needed to eat her food.
Food is great, the cashier/cook is RUDE, very very rude, I didn't know how the system worked & she yelled at me "u can't do what ever u want here" just because I ordered from the computer that was for cash only & meant to pay by card (I didn't know it was one computer for each transaction) & when I told her I didn't know cuz it was my first time there, she's screamed at me "you wanna keep talking? I give u money back, I don't give u pad Thai" It was kind of funny to see that much sass, but yeah no, the lady is very rude, be aware
