Review Summary

Reviews describe L'Afrique de l'Est as a warm, family run spot delivering authentic Ethiopian cooking that consistently delights with injera that soaks up flavorful stews and a wide range of meat and vegetarian options. The experience is characterized by generous portions, a welcoming BYOB policy, and a homely, almost family gathering ambiance created by the couple running the place. The restaurant is also noted for catering large events with a huge variety of dishes that impress guests. Positive notes are balanced by concerns about price and portions for some diners, occasional long waits even when seating is available, and reports of a space that can feel a bit untidy with slow service in some visits. Overall, L'Afrique de l'Est is seen as a go to destination for truly authentic Ethiopian food in Montreal, especially for groups or couples seeking a warm, convivial, wine friendly meal and a memorable injera soaked experience.

Food is always amazing. Family owned spot, local business. Absolutely recommend to anyone. If you're two people, I'd recommend 1 meat dish & 2 veggies. It comes with enough injera to be full. Cold in the winter, bring warm sweater just in case. Also BYOB. In the photo we ordered #4-#16-#18, but everything on the menu is delicious, no wrong picks.

We went knowing that we would have to wait . we were prepared for it & brought cards & conversation. It was really nice to spend time in the space & with my family & I like that it's run by a family. The injera was very good! The best I have ever had by far! everything is made on the spot. Again the injera soaked up the food so good! I'm vegetarian, but my daughters are not I tried some of their bread that had soaked up the meat dishes & it was super delicious. Just good straight up vibes & quality food.

Unassuming spot that is one of the best in the neighbourhood, serving flavourful, authentic, fresh food that's made with love & worth the wait. Lamb, ground beef, whitefish & lentil dishes were all highlights, served on a large platter with plenty of warm injera. The owners are so kind. & it's BYOB

Decided to try this out since it's in the neighborhood, & I like supporting local businesses. Also because the last Ethiopian restaurant I tried was a bit disappointing to say the least. In short, the food here was the BOMB dot com!! Bursting with flavors, & just the right portions, laid out on freshly-made injera. Sure: the place is not the fanciest, & the service is a bit slow (expect at least a 30-minute wait for your food). It's a mom & pop shop in its truest form; Mom & Pop (owners) are the only 2 employees I saw. But once you take your first bite, everything is forgiven. Definitely going back. Soon. & again. & again...

Excellent! Ethiopian food is one of the most delicious culinary experiences across the globe. They will bring you a large circular plate full of rich flavor with the soft & spongy injera which will be enough to scoop up your entire plate. You can bring your own wine here, if that's something you like.
